Terrain & Geography
The Polestar Islands is a moderately sized archipelago situated in the corner of the East Blue closest to Reverse Mountain and the Calm Belt. It consists mostly of broad islands covered in hills, with a few small mountains on larger isles and wooded areas that separate small fields and patches of grassland. In terms of population, the majority resides in Loguetown.
Climate & Weather
Due to its placement, the archipelago has rather stable weather all year round, with a mild climate that sees light rainfall and clear, sometimes breezy days. Storms are extremely uncommon in this region, and temperatures rarely fall too far below freezing, even in the middle of winter. Summers are warm and breezy.
Flora & Fauna
Most species in the archipelago are domesticated livestock, including cattle and a unique breed of sheep called Balyarn tended to in the hills of some of the islands. Small predators such as foxes and the odd wolf pose a problem to farmers. Large lions and wild horses can be found roaming the archipelago’s own nature reserve. Flora includes common grasses, trees, and typical crops such as rice and wheat, alongside grapes and olives.
Settlements & Landmarks
The most prominent settlement in the Polestar Islands is Loguetown, “the town of the beginning and the end”, which almost completely dominates the island it is on. Loguetown houses the B-3 Marine Base. Other villages and hamlets (such as Noville) can be found on other islands, which deal with the archipelago’s agricultural side, including crops and livestock. Dendum Island is dedicated solely to the preservation of Polestar’s unique wildlife, and is thus uninhabited. The seedier Markit Town houses the black market which deals with pirates.
Groups & Organizations
The Polestar Islands is governed by a small council of elected townspeople who oversee their respective settlements, convening at Loguetown’s City Hall on a regular basis to discuss matters. Loguetown and its surroundings are mostly policed by the Marines, currently under the command of Captain Mon Roy. A seedier underbelly provides cover for a number of black market traders who specialise in selling goods to pirates, though the archipelago also has its more benevolent sides; a prominent vineyard produces expensive wines, and a conservation team of park rangers do their utmost to prevent poaching of animals in the Polestar Nature Reserve.
Culture & Traditions
The architecture of the Polestar Islands accentuates tall, square buildings with sloped roofs, arches, and vaulted ceilings. Most buildings are made of stone, especially in Loguetown. A national holiday occurs yearly on the anniversary of Gol D. Roger’s execution, though his legacy draws a lot of tourism. The archipelago’s main dishes are bread and pasta, rice, and various fish dishes thanks to an extensive number of exotic fish. Lamb and mutton are also prominent meats. The most expensive wine produced here is the Gildspine Castello Winery’s “Gold” label white wine.
History
Loguetown itself served as both the birthplace and execution site of Pirate King “Gold” Roger, and subsequently boomed at the dawn of the Golden Age of Piracy. In its time, it has seen many pirates (rookies and veterans alike) pass through its port, and gained a reputation as inescapable during Smoker’s time in charge of B-3. Two years ago the young upstart Monkey D. Luffy visited on his journey to the Grand Line, which coincided with one of the most turbulent storms in recorded history striking the archipelago, culminating in the destruction of the famous execution platform when lightning struck it. Smoker and his then Lieutenant Tashigi left the archipelago in pursuit of criminals Monkey D. Luffy, Buggy, and Alvida. In the wake of Smoker’s departure, the World Navy has since instated Mon Roy, known as the “Dandy Swordsman”, as the commanding officer of B-3.Mon Roy
Rank: Captain
Epithet: “Dandy Swordsman”
Info: Standing at 9’11” (302 cm) Mon Roy is an imposing figure. His brown curly hair is at shoulder length and contrasts with his olive-colored eyes. Combined with his French bicorne hat and his marine uniform he comes off as a rather intimidating man. Despite this, Mon Roy is a rather soft-spoken and respectful man who deeply cares for those who serve him. He is also a strong believer in moral justice and doing what is right. Understanding that the law doesn't always hold the key to true justice. Mon Roy is a very powerful fighter, combining expertise in Rokushiki alongside masterful swordsmanship. He specifically prefers using an estoc sword alongside mobility abilities like Soru and Geppō. He even has mastered the former, being able to incorporate it into his sword fighting.
