This was not what Tia had pictured in her mind of Newton’s homeland. She’d imagined rolling fields of green. And sheep. Lots of sheep. Maybe fog? Certainly not a vast desert where the sun beat down relentlessly. There wasn’t a port town. Tia had rounded the island and been sure of that. There were no rivers to go down. Nothing. So, she hoofed it. With her Veera on her shoulder. Tia supposed it must have been better in the shade that her horns and hair provided.
The heat was no issue. Tia was accustomed to the heat. She’d worked in a forge for the better part of her life after all. She didn’t even break a sweat in the desert heat. Tia couldn’t even fathom little ones getting across this vast desert without supplies and ways to cool down. Surely, it would be dreadful. For Tia, it was a pleasant walk while an oasis shimmered in the distance.
She could tell it was an oasis mostly because she could pick out the bits of green and such around the shimmering bit. It wasn’t a heat mirage. She covered the distance quickly with her giant strides. Once they got to the city, it was simply a matter of finding Newton’s home. As a bounty hunter, she specialized in finding people, and some minor sleuthing had pointed to a specific section of the city.
As they neared the oasis and the city surrounding it, Tia noted several people milling around the outskirts had taken notice of the giant in their midst. Ordinarily, she would have taken some pride in their terrified stares. But she still had the bitter taste of defeat and humiliation in her mouth. Tia sighed through her nose. At least they’d spread the word that there was a red haired giant in town. Newton would know who it was. Tia glanced to her passenger.
“Veera, darling, we’re here. Do you need to stop and take a dip in the oasis? Rehydrate and all that?”
