Personality
Cool: Generally speaking Carter gives off the vibe of being a pretty cool guy. He remains relaxed and cool headed in most situations, his relaxed smile rarely leaving his face.
Bookworm: Carter likes books, whenever he’s not exploring some exotic place he is probably reading about one, or some obscure historical event. He occasionally also enjoys reading fiction and often wonders if the made up stories may have some basis in the fastical realities of the world.
Passionate: Carter holds a deep passion for history and hates seeing stories, people and cultures go forgotten, possibly due to his own origins being mostly forgotten about. There is very little Carter won’t put himself through for the sake of discovering some lost history.
Carefree: Optimistically reckless is how some people would describe this man. A Giant geyser in the way? An impassable chasm? Monstrous beasts guard the ancient temple? “It’ll be alright.” is Carter’s response. Whether from sheer confidence in his abilities or recklessness is anybody’s guess.
Intellectual: Yet for all his antics, deep down Carter is an intellectual and scholar. His goals are the furtherment of knowledge and would much rather use his brains over violence or just physically breaking down an ancient doorway while one could figure out the secret mechanism.
Appearance
Mr Champollion Carter is a tall handsome man in his late twenties. From his Lunarian heritage he has kept the features of a darker skin and the silvery white hair. Yet in a stroke of fate, or some might say luck, he did not inherit the wings of his father. He did however inherit a tall frame and strong build, with toned muscles and broad shoulders.
Carter keeps his neck length hair slicked back over the top with the back and sides cut very short, blending into a close cropped chinstrap beard that lines a square jaw. Framing a pair of piercing green eyes is a small pair of round glasses, a small by-product of reading all day and nights for many years.
For clothes, Carter adapts to his environment but his usual attire consists of his glasses, a white buttoned shirt of which he leaves the top couple of buttons open and rolls up the sleeves to just under the elbows and a tan pair of trousers with lots of pockets for his to put in gear along with a good pair of boots. The outfit is also completed with a satchel Carter keeps his books in, his sword he keeps in a leather strap across his back and loops over his chest and a sea stone bracelet.
What Carter is never seen without is a simple necklace with a few red and black alternating beads with a central pendant in the shape of a flame. His only memento from his father.
If the weather requires it Carter will add a hat or a jacket to his outfit.
In almost every situation unless he is required to use it, Carter will keep his Lunar Flame extinguished.
Traits
Lunar Flame:
Lunarian Fixed Trait
This allows Carter to generate and manipulate fire from his body so long as the flame he carries is lit. This functions as a free Aspect that can be used to create Techniques of Rank 1 or higher. Carter can opt to extinguish his flame of his own volition and usually keeps it as such.
Frailty of Flame:
Lunarian Fixed Trait
This is the flip side of the Flame’s power which renders Carter more susceptible to physical harm if the flame he carries is extinguished by a large amount of water. Even if the flame is extinguished to avoid this, a Lunarian cannot reignite their flame without triggering this fragility effect unless they can dry themselves appropriately first.
Inhuman Strength:
Optional Starting Trait
Through both his origins and his upbringing, Carter has developed a physical strength making him capable of feats of power far beyond that of normal humans.
Inhuman Perception:
Optional Starting Trait
Carter always keeps his eyes open and makes sure to never miss even the smallest of details. He has developed his sense to make sure nothing ever escapes his eyes and to always be on high alert.
Sun Person:
Devil Fruit Trait
Having eaten the legendary Nichi Nichi no Mi Carter has become a “Sun Person”, a being capable of releasing and controlling the thermonuclear power of a sun from their very body.
Fighting Styles
Name:– La Voie de la Lame (The Way of the Blade)
Focus:– Swordsmanship and Lunar Fire
Class:– E
Description:– A style of swordsmanship developed by Carter’s father that was designed to mix in a Lunarian’s natural fire abilities with a sword style that combined hard attacks with a soft defence. Unfortunately Carter was only ever taught the very basics and is left to piece together the rest himself from a few vague memories.
Name:–Solar Style
Focus:– Devil Fruit
Class:– E
Description:– The “Fighting Style” developed by Carter from the nature of his fruit. Not really a style so much as a general ability to use his Devil Fruit’s powers in a non-catastrophic way.
Equipment
Name:– Carter’s Sword
Fighting Style:– La Voie de la Lame (The Way of the Blade)
Rank:– 0
Description:– A large Kriegsmesser type sword that Carter carries around with him. It has a varnished riveted wood to make a handle with the full length tang visibly going through it, a wide crossguard with an added guard ring for extra hand protection. The single edge blade itself is almost as long as Carter is tall and curves slightly near the tip.
Name:– Seastone Bracelet
Fighting Style:– Solar Style
Rank:– 2
Quality:– Seatone
Description:– A Simple Seatone bracelet that barely contains any of the material. Carter keeps it as it saps the power of his Devil Fruit keeping him from accidentally using the dangerous and volatile power. While it does have a minor sapping effect on his body, it’s minor enough to not impair him on his day to day, but he will take it off in combat.
Background
“Once upon a time there were people who were as gods that lived atop the Red Line.” This simple statement is just about all people remember of the once proud Lunarian folks. A few decades ago one of the few lone Lunarian survivors made his way to some isolated island in the New World, far away from the eyes of the World Government.
This Lunarian warrior was named Carver and tired of fighting and running for his life, he simply chose to hide away in the mountains where no one would bother him. Occasionally the locals would wander closer to his shack but would be scared away by the imposing figure, maybe the flames and black wings had something to do with it as well.
One day, as Carver was picking mushrooms he heard a scream and followed the sound to find out what was happening. Some village girl was caught between the edge of a cliff and a hungry mountain direwolf the size of an ox. Carver may not have cared much for the locals; yet he had no intentions to let someone die in front of him. The beast was felled in a single stroke and the girl saved.
To the village girl this must have been a sight out of a story book, a noble night with flames on his back, a saviour angel with black wings. Carver had little to say but that the girl should go home while it was safe. She did as instructed but at the last moment remembered to thank her saviour and tell him her name, she was Julienne; Champollion Julienne. Carver responded in kind and returned to his shack, content to forget about the events of the day.
It would be months later that one night Carver was woken by cries of help outside of his isolated shack atop a cliff. It was the girl again, begging for help, yet there were no beasts after her. No, she was calling out that pirates were attacking her village, there was nothing her people could do against such force, normally they’d just pay them off and move on, but these pirates were out for blood and violence, not money.
Carver had spent years keeping his head down, he had put away his anger and hate, yet he was still a proud Lunarian warrior. He had no desire to save the world, but he would not ignore someone asking for his help.
What came down upon the pirates was a noble night of the blue sky, a mighty swordsman who could cut a battleship in half and rain fire upon his enemies. In mere moments, the pirates were routed and the villagers remained in awe of the one who had rescued them.
No longer was the winged man in the mountains a monster to keep children from straying too far, he was now the angelic saviour of this island. Carver was ready to leave the people behind, expecting the usual fear of his appearance, yet these people had no such feelings anymore, only gratitude. These folks had never been saved before, only ever suffered at the hands of outsiders, whether pirates or slavers, they had no Navy to protect them, for the first time, these people had found someone to rely on, and for the first time in a very long time Carver found somewhere to belong.
For years following, Carver stayed as the protector of this small port village, pirates were kept away and the locals mostly accepted the winged man. Some, as humans often did, did not like the strange man for his differences, but even them rarely voiced their opinions as it was he that kept them safe.
Over time, Carver became closer and closer with Julienne, the human girl who came to him in her moment of need; they even married and in time had a child. This boy was born with his father’s features and burning flame, only the wings were missing. Carver said he had no family name to give to the boy so he should have his mother’s and that even if he did any lunarian name would be dangerous to have. She did not object but stated that the boy should then be named for his father in some way. So she named him Carter to evoke his father’s name.
For a few more years life carried on, yet Carver lived with a fear now, that one day someone would come for him, and that they would take his son as well. So the proud Lunarian Warrior decided to make every moment count, he told every story he knew of his people and of others to his son, that the world was a vast and mysterious place. Young Carter loved every story and as time passed came to want to know more and more stories, leading to his love of books and solving mysteries.
Yet everything must come to an end, even a peaceful life. Was it some pirate that Carver chased off? Or did word make it to the World government some other way? They would never know, but one day the marines did come for Carver.
Perhaps he could have fought, but the proud Lunarian Warrior did not, he had had a decade with the villagers and six happy years with his son during which he taught the boy to never choose violence when not necessary. So when the time came and the Marines came for him he simply walked to them and said he would go peacefully, so long as they promised to not harm the villagers.
The marine officer said he had no orders regarding the village, they were only there for the lunarian and any possible offspring and did not wish for violence. This brought a moment of fear in Carver, he had Julienne and Carter hide but if any of the villagers broke and spoke of them, Carter would be taken as well, at that moment Carver was ready to fight an entire armada, but he did not have to.
Villagers began to speak up, saying there was no child, some even screamed and shouted they did not want this freak in town, he was a tyrant, a monster that extorted them, they had no love for him. These were harsh words, but Carver understood and so did the sobbing young Carter in his mother’s arms hiding under floorboards of their house, overhearing everything. With these words the villagers were protecting Carter, they could not save their own protector, but they could in turn save what he could not, for ten years he had protected them and now they protected what he loved most.
There was a single brief smile and a hint of a tear on the proud Lunarian warrior, no, the proud protector of the island's face. And then… one more act. A fake angry swipe at the village chief easily intercepted by the marine leader. An accusation from carver that it must have been the chief that sold him out, before being subdued by the Marines.
As he was being taken away, Carver said one more thing to the officer, asking if there was still such a high reward for selling out a Lunarian. At that moment the officer understood, and replied there was. A hundred million Beri was a great sum the Officer added, put in as taxes it would even let a small island like this one join the World Government and gain the protection from Marines.
Whichever lowlife had given the tip originally mattered little, the officer did not care for a slaver to get that money, if it could be served to better an island that was losing its sole protector, all the better.
Young Carter had been inconsolable for weeks, he had lost his father, but in time, he understood all his father and the townspeople had given him, he cherished every memory of his father and every story he had told him. The villagers had little in the way of stories and legends to pass to Carter, but with the island now part of the World Government and with new trade coming in, what they could do is buy books and gift them to the boy.
Over the years, Carter became a bit of an amateur scholar and became more and more determined to explore the world and see all these things for himself and uncover even more mysteries.
The first real big expedition Carter went on himself was about five years ago, he had found a book that spoke of a lost temple to a forgotten Sun God on the edge of the White White Sea, up above in the sky. That sounded great to him and so Carter set out to find it.
He was of course mostly laughed at as the actual existence of Sky Island was dubious to many scholars in the Blues, but the young Archaeologist was from a weirder part of the world and knew better.
The getting there was an adventure on its own, involving getting up some high mountains, bribing officials and even seducing a princess, but all that stuff wasn’t important. No the old temple ruins were the important part, Carter did find them, all covered in vegetation and abandoned. It took Carter over a week to even figure out how to open the doors to the temple, locked by some contraption that required lighting sconces in a certain order all over the island.
Eventually once inside the walls were full of colourful murals and hieroglyphs that the young scholar took great pain to copy in his notes. Eventually he made it to a central hall with a tall raised dais in the middle, a large golden jar illuminated by a skylight standing in the centre. This was where Carter’s youth and impatience got the better of him. He beelined for the jar and picked it up, excited to examine the find, triggering a trap. The entire temple began to shake and collapse on itself!
At first Carter attempted to use his sword and Lunarian flame to punch a hole through the temple and escape but to no avail. As he flailed about though, still carrying the golden jar he could feel something rolling inside it as he moved. Maybe there was some sort of solution in there.
Using all his strength to pry open the sealed gold container Carter was surprised to find what looked like a fruit inside it. It must have been in there for hundreds of years. How was it not rotten? Also was it glowing? All sorts of thoughts went through the mind of the young man.
He recalled stories of Magical Devil Fruits, though he had never gotten proof of them. Would this help? Oh screw it, it couldn’t get worse anyway. In a moment of… something resembling a mix of desperation and excitement Carter bit the fruit.
Boy did it taste awful, but the young man wasn’t sure he was feeling any different. Well there was only one real way to find out! So in what may have been some sort of instinct, Carter rushed at the wall of the temple and punched it with all his might! Upon contact light and fire burst out of his hand but it was not his natural red flame, no this was golden and brighter than anything he had ever seen, it was as if the sun itself shone out of his fist and exploded the wall, making an opening for the young man to escape.
Huh, well this certainly was new, turns out stories of Devil Fruits must have definitely been true after all. He would have to test out the no swimming part somewhere safe, with people around later. With his notes and discoveries on him and a ruined temple left behind Carter set out on his next adventure.
More adventures and quite a lot of collateral damage at first due his fruit’s unstable powers, Carter opted to get a small amount of seatsone on a bracelet to keep his own powers in check. Don’t want to burn a library (again) after all!
Now Carter travels the seas seeking to solve ever greater mysteries and go and ever greater adventures!
