Whitaker Bryony is a cheerful girl by nature, taking life in her stride and always enthusiastic about whatever is to come next. Ever the optimist, though certainly not foolish, her bubbly and seemingly carefree nature has been a blessing to fellow troops among the ranks of the Revolution. Even in dire straits, her charm and cheer rouses a certain confidence in her comrades.
Forever Toeing the Line
Despite her apparent dedication to the Revolutionary cause and ideology, Bryony’s own ideals are a little more vague. While she certainly sees the Revolution as a means to a positive end, she simultaneously doesn’t perceive the World Government as a wholly bad thing – a viewpoint that has caused doubt and distrust to spawn from her allies at times. Regardless, she aims to do what she can for the people of the world, though isn’t always certain that direct opposition to the World Government is the right way in certain cases.
Acting Aficionado
Miss Whitaker is something of a stage play savant, finding such performances as theatre and pantomime enthralling. Though she has never considered adopting the role of actress – and will always turn down any direct attempt at pushing her toward that pastime – Bryony’s adoration of the stage arts has led her to be able to understand subtleties. Some of her comrades call her a living lie detector for her ability to discern deceptions, while others have said she’s too good at being able to replicate the cues of certain emotions.
Just Don’t Look Down…!
One of Bryony’s biggest fears is heights – an apparent bane of her existence which she has never shaken. Her body prefers stability, rooted to terra firma, and while she’s okay with faring the open oceans, the mere sensation of vertigo can shatter her usually bubbly and unflappable persona. While she may allow her roots to do such things as clamber up structures, she’ll never voluntarily ascend to such heights of her own accord. Her usual instinct in these cases is to jump on whatever she sees as stable, regardless of what it might be.

At 5’3” (160 cm), Whitaker Bryony is somewhat on the short side, with a slim physique that favours the hips and rump more so than the upper reaches. Normally, her skin is quite bronzed, with a healthy complexion to her round, lightly freckled face. With small, rounded features and warm eyes a blend of hazel and green, she has a certain warming cuteness about her. Her hair is a dark chestnut, long and straight and always left draping down to the middle of her back.
Outfit & Accessories
Bryony’s usual choice of attire includes somewhat fashionable attire; colourful crop tops – ranging from strapped to strapless, Bardot to Bandeau – and ripped skinny jeans of a preferential three-quarters length are typical fashion choices. She tends to wear sandals to keep her toes exposed and, in a similar fashion, will wear fingerless gloves or mittens in cooler climes. Her favoured colour choices are greens, pinks, purples and blues. She sometimes dons Daisy Dukes in conjunction with leg warmers.

Having consumed a Mythical variant of the Hito Hito no Mi, Bryony can transform into a mystical, plant-like entity and back. This gives her the ability to generate hallucinogenic, deliriant and psychotropic effects via peculiar energy waves discharged via sound, as well as extending and manipulating her phalanges as roots.

Despite her small frame, Bryony’s actually quite a bit stronger than you’d imagine at first glance. She has little trouble in delivering powerful kicks and elbow strikes, enough to send a fully grown man – and even those of less typical stature – sailing. This blends especially well with her Devil Fruit’s abilities.

Bryony’s ability to hold her breath is impressive, though certainly not superhuman by any stretch of the imagination. Though she can’t swim due to her Devil Fruit’s influence, she can at least hold on for a while until rescue comes. In addition, thanks to the unusual nature of her Devil Fruit, Bryony has limited photosynthetic abilities which further improve her oxygen efficiency in daylight, so long as she’s well hydrated.
Eyes for the Night

Bryony’s eyes have a natural affinity for darkened, dim conditions. Though she cannot see in total darkness, as nobody can, she is still capable of discerning detail in poorly illuminated areas. This has been further honed by her Devil Fruit’s dependence on burrowing.

As a Mandrake Human (“Mandoreiku Ningen”), Bryony can transform between her normal human form, a “Half-Beast” form and a “Full-Beast” form, drawing upon the mysterious powers of the Mandrake. While transformed at least partially, she can use the Mandrake’s powers to generate peculiar waves of energy via her voice – the likes of which have peculiar effects on a person’s mind and body – and extend and manipulate roots from her extremities.
Weaknesses:–
- Kairōseki (“Sea-Prism Stone”) saps the physical strength of the Ability User and prevents them from consciously controlling or activating their power.
- Submersion in water immobilises the Ability User and causes them to sink, disabling conscious power control.
- The Ability User’s hypnotic vocal effects are easily negated; simply obstructing their mouth or plugging one’s ears massively reduces the effectiveness of their cries. Furthermore, the special sound waves cannot pass through solid materials, so even if one can hear the Ability User’s voice, they can avoid influence by hiding behind sufficient cover.
- Roots generated via the Mandrake are still a part of the Ability User’s overall body in a similar way to how a Logia eater’s form functions, so use of Kairōseki or Busōshoku Haki is still an effective means of defending against the roots. Furthermore, the roots require stability else they become difficult to manipulate properly at greater reaches, so keeping the Ability User from the ground limits their effectiveness at range.

Bryony’s size increases to approximately 6’7” (200 cm), causing her skin – specifically around the extremities – to turn pallid, with thin hair-like protrusions around her arms and legs. Her skin also adopts a somewhat waxy look and texture, while various foliate protrusions appear: She gains a “skirt” of leaves around her pelvic area, with further leafy growths around her upper arms and collar, and light purple-pink petals forming flared cuffs around her wrists. Small leaves and petals also appear amongst her hair, which in turn gains pale green highlights.- Full-Beast
Bryony’s size drops to about 3’5” (104 cm), with childlike proportions and a pale, waxy complexion. Her body becomes completely covered in a fine fuzz, concentrated around the extremities, overall resembling the tuberous root of the Mandragora. In this form, her body is somewhat rubbery and flexible, and most of her features blend into the waxy flesh. Her hair is completely replaced by a broad rosette of fleshy green leaves, somewhat obovate (teardrop shaped where the stem attaches to the tapering end) in shape. The leaves themselves are almost as long – if not longer than – the main body.

By focusing her strength and control over her roots, Bryony has developed the ability to mimic the Rokushiki technique known as Shigan (“Finger Gun”) via precision strikes executed via rapid growth spurts or uncoilings of her root network. Of course, the roots aren’t strong enough to penetrate anything tougher or harder than flesh, fabric or soil.

Background
}“I was given the choice between joining the Marines, or joining the Revolution – and I’d like to think I made the right choice, y’know?”~ Bryony– Born in South Blue, Whitaker Bryony was the daughter and fourth child of the Whitakers; a family known for their charity and philanthropy in providing emergency services to the people over past generations. A big family with many branches who had long since scattered themselves throughout the isles, Bryony was just one small bud yet to grow. And grow she would.
– Bryony’s own life was rather simple; even throughout her early and mid teens, nothing of interest really happened. Simple familial disputes, rampant hormones and classic teenage rebelliousness were all par the course. Piracy tended to avoid her homeland, primarily due to the presence of a World Navy subsidiary outpost and its stationed flotilla, which protected the small country and its surrounding waters from criminal attacks. It was only three years prior to present day that things would change.
– In an attempt at liberating people from a World Government controlled island, a branch of the growing Revolutionary Army decided to make its first ambitious assault on a land with Marine presence. Having been tipped off that the country’s Archduke was embroiled within the slavery business, and that the appointed command of the local Marine outpost was accepting bribes, the rebels struck hard and fast. The Whitaker family – Bryony’s grandfather in particular – had been a close friend of the Archduke for many decades. They ended up caught in the crossfire.
– As civilians were evacuated and the clash between the World Navy and the Revolution grew more intense, Bryony and her three brothers were forced to make a very difficult choice. It had been while they were in the company of the Archduke’s family, being praised for their philanthropy, that the rebels had made their surprise attack on the castle. Set to flee through secret passages, Bryony and her older brother stumbled upon something shocking. Slaves. Dozens of them, chained up in cramped, damp cells. Bryony’s morality called.
– Against her brother Byron’s will, she attempted to break the slaves free. Ever the lover of acting, and even she had not realised the biggest act of all was the Archduke’s own relationship with their family. She was furious and upset. It was in the midst of her conflict with her brother, which had turned from verbal to physical, that the Revolutionaries broke into the slave chambers. In a rush of chaos – the likes of which she could not properly comprehend in the moment – Bryony was given an ultimatum: Join the Revolutionary Army, or return to a lifestyle she now knew was founded on lies and illegality.
– Bryony chose the former. From that point on, she left her family behind – abandoned her ties to her homeland and joined the steadily growing ranks of the Revolution. Though she was not a slave, she certainly felt as if she had achieved a new level of freedom. Three years would pass, over the course of which she was trained and taught. The most prominent event in those years occurred more recently – in the success of a mission, she was given a peculiar gift. Henceforth, Whitaker Bryony would become one of the most unusual Zoan Ability Users in the world… The Mandrake!
