Hey all,
Was looking through the rules and boards and realized that we are missing something that can be a lot of fun; a dueling network! I understand of course that not all characters are fighting based but, after all, this is a shonen. Most characters do have some way to defend themselves and some would even pride their ability to fight. I think a dueling board could be great and also an incentive to make posts that are a little more straight forward and fun. In a fight you don’t have to think of a plot or work around NPCs.
In other sites I’ve been a part of, this was usually a graded portion of the site. Of course fights were judged on completely different criteria than threads, often at a steep deficit from a true thread. I also imagine that, if something like this were to be adopted and graded that it also wouldn’t be eligible for things like Poinz or maybe even Beri unless a bet was placed. Hypothetically, fights that reach a specific baseline could even only be eligible for a flat, low amount of exp regardless of length or participation.
Still, I think this could be a great idea. People could even place bets or offer rewards for particular fights. Maybe we could even, in the future, hold a tournament style event. This would be something that would be relatively simple from a management perspective but look good for sitewide participation.
Below I’ve made an outline of some rules and grading criteria. In my mind I imagine two boards; a Challenge Board and then the actual Fights!
Simple right? So that's an extremely rough outline of what I had in mind. I do think something like this would be good for site health. Not only that, but providing players with new and innovative ways to play is always grand. There could even be a specific "Fight Judge" who would grade and administrate if there was a dispute.

Rules
What?
Combat rp is like a mixture of your standard text based rp and real life combat. The best way that I've found to do combat rp is to think of yourself in your characters shoes. When making your moves keep in mind the placement of everything around you, and your own body. When you charged forward, did you lean into the attack or did you plant your foot and kind of slide into it. Remember rp fighting is like real life, in that timing and placement is important. You have to keep in mind a multitude of things just like in a real fight.
Body mechanics
Body Reaction
Reaction speed
Timing
force
Motion
Momentum
Possible counter reactions
Reactions for those
Its these things that keeping in mind will help you accel much more in online combat, and even in real combat. Learning either one helps the other greatly. I haven't met anyone yet who being honestly good at one wasn't moderately good at the other. Understanding and paying attention to everything around you is key to winning in an rp fight.
Why?
RP Fighting can be a quite and fun way to blow off some steam. It’s also a way to keep an active thread without the expressed need for plot, allowing you to simply enjoy the control of your character. There are many parallels to RP fighting and actual interaction that people do not realize. The more you fight PCs, the more you realize the expressed need for detail. Of course this doesn’t mean you bog down your post with what your character’s breath smells like, but instead you start to notice why it’s important to mention what hand you throw an attack with. Why it’s important to note how your character holds and heaves their body. As you learn these techniques through practical application, you can then incorporate them into your story RPs with a frame of reference.
How?
Keep in mind there are a number of important rules to keep in mind. First and foremost, any rule that applies to the board as a whole still applies here. I will reference a few below just to remind you
No godmodding. Simply don’t do it.
Word limit. Of course you must still meet the minimum to get any credit for the thread.
No killing or using DF powers that require explicit permission without having those permissions.
Be fair! For example; f you throw yourself into the air to attack, keep in mind how little maneuverability you would actually have. Adjusting yourself unrealistically to avoid a hit might sound like a good idea but please be realistic.
No arguing OOC about fight results. If you have an issue about the result or an opponents move, request a staff to look over the thread. They will determine the outcome based on realism and what the character are actually capable of.
To challenge someone to a fight make a post in the challenge board! In this post you can specify rules and challenges. Things like; No characters above X rank. No weapons. No Dials. Hand to Hand only. Sword fight. 500 word minimum. These are all fair challenges you can level and anyone is free to accept a fight with you. After that may then post in the fight board.
There is a limit to the amount of active fights at any time. This limit will be 3(?) fights per character.
((I’m sure I’m forgetting some things that would be pretty key. This is just an outline of course.))

Grading
An RP fight would be graded on a different basis than a mission or plot thread. Where, in the other examples, context and story go out of the window. Here, the entire basis is focused on technical skill and believability. Fighters are not awarded extra exp based on who wins! The focus of this board is not bragging rights but instead improvement through combat. Everyone is rewarded equally for providing a good and fun show. The only exception to this rule is if a bet is agreed upon beforehand by all combatants in the arena.
So, fights start out at 1 exp per post. Bonus exp is then accrued through several means detailed below.
Grammar/Spelling ((Don’t mind me stealing this shamelessly from the existing rubric.))
Firstly, grammar and spelling. This is a forum in which we write stories, essentially. Grammar and spelling are huge and can (and will) have an impact on the entire grade. Too many people are frustrated saying that one grammatical/spelling error shouldn't take their thread from a 5 down to a 4 (and it shouldn't!), but multiple errors littering a thread or post will and can take an otherwise perfect score down to a 3 or 2. Now to those reading this and feeling that this is 'unjust', just ask your literature teachers how important grammar and spelling is when they grade one of your papers. Not to mention that most, if not all, word processors have a spelling and grammar check. Outside of laziness, there should be little to no excuse for a slew of errors in a post or thread.
*Now, for those of you whose first language isn't English, there is a limit to how much slack we as graders will cut. Now, as this is a site in which we speak (er...type?) in English, we will give a bit of leeway (on a case by case circumstance) but we do expect to see growth and improvement over time.
Believability
Did your character behave how you would expect someone of your rank. More importantly, this section of the rubric is for if your character reacted and moved like a real person in the world of One Piece. This means no adjusting in midair to avoid attacks (outside of Geppou), and no E characters shrugging off gunshots to the chest. Now, don’t get me wrong, Shonen is king in knockdown, drag out fights that have a dramatic turn around in the end. Still, that doesn’t mean you can go around avoiding every attack and expect to completely dominate your opponent. There is give and take in every battle. Accept that.
Good Fight
Probably the most objective part of the rubric; was it a good fight? As said earlier, big comebacks are always huge fun. So are the fights that are dead even until one character pulls out a trump card. These should be interesting, engaging, and fun to read. Not only for yourself but for anyone who might come by the board. Believe me when I say I get way more enjoyment out of a fight with one of my character whenever it’s close. I like to step back and try to read my posts objectively; if they don’t leave me on the edge of my seat then no one else will be excited either! Good fights are fun! Even losing can be a blast whenever the journey was awesome. Remember; there are no expressed rewards for winning a fight. So, keep it clean and keep it engaging. There’s no reason to think less of your character just for losing.
So, grading would work like this;
(1 base point + 0 to 3 bonus points based on the above scale) * # of posts = reward
You get 1 as a base for every post in the thread with a minimum of 3 posts per involved character. From there the grader decides how well you score in each of the above categories. The options are simply 0, 0.5, and 1. For example; a fight ends after 10 posts from 2 characters involved. His part in the fight was awesome and cool. He had a few grammar mistakes but, in making his fight cool, accidentally stepped outside of the bounds of what his character should be capable of.
1 base point
0.5 for grammar.
1 for good fight
0 for believability
2.5 * 10 = 25 points for character one.
