Deep freeze, one of the districts of Ice Nine, is the coldest area of North Blue. Temperatures drop to negative fifty degrees Fahrenheit in plain summer. There is a constant breeze, which never goes slower than 15 knots. There are no plants or shrubs, its inhabitants are in the hundred’s or less. There is an underground marine ice prison. Many dangerous criminals are held there, the most violent ones are sentenced to death by freezing, one of the most torturous ways to die. The cold weather first brushes upon your skin, laying a kiss of death, then your body begins to shiver uncontrollably, you begin to breathe heavily, and the hairs on your skins slowly thaw. Soon you can’t feel your extremities, and eventually you are struck with a sudden feel of warmth, hypothermia. Countless pirates have met their end on the miserable prison of Deep freeze, including the parents of one of the inhabitants of Deep freeze, Sylaar. He was known to the townspeople as Sylaar the Vanquisher. His parents were notorious pirates, whom were captured and sentenced to death in the prison of Deep freeze. Sylar watched as they were frozen to death, leaving him with a hateful grudge against marines. Sylar spent his childhood barely surviving on his own in the cold and harsh lands. One night when he was on the verge of death due to the cold weather and lack of food, he desperately burrowed through a garbage can in hopes of finding clothing and food. He found an odd fruit, and didn’t hesitate to eat it. Next thing he knew, he no longer felt the extreme cold on his body, he didn’t feel hunger or thirst, and he could no longer feel his own heartbeat. Sylaar had, unknowingly, eaten the Necro Necro no mi. A devil’s fruit which turns whomever ingests it into the living dead, their organs and all other body functions cease to function, but they can still live eternally without them. Sylaar spent most of his adolescence in solitude, the few other inhabitants of Ice Nine, kept their distance from Sylaar; they detested his weird mannerisms and his zombie-like appearance. Most were frightened by his looks. Sylaar turned to the wilderness after being rejected by the townspeople, for the next several years he honed his fighting and devil fruit’s ability. When he was an adult he returned to the town, and after an encounter with a group of pirates, which had escaped from the ice nine prison, the villagers gave him the nickname “The Vanquisher.” Sylaar fought many pirates over the next few years, it was the only thing he could do in an island infested with marines, but he actually admired the pirates whom he fought more than the marines whom controlled the island. Deep inside, he wanted to slay them all, but he knew he wasn’t strong enough, so he stole and picked fights with pirates, who where hated in this land. Eventually Sylaar became obsessed with the idea of being an infamous pirate. He never had any goals in life; he had been living all this time, just to live. But for this first time in his life, Sylaar had a goal. He wanted to be known for his fighting abilities, he wanted to be known and feared by the rest of the world, he wanted to become a pirate and crush anyone who stood in his way, whether it would be marines, civilians or other pirates.
Sylaar was determined to live on as a pirate, but he knew he must get off this marine infested island as quickly as possible, and find a crew with similar interests. So, he formulated a plot to do so. He had no money, no ship, and no carpentry skills, so he would have to commandeer some type of small ship or row boat. Sylaar planned to head to Snow town in Ice nine, a town with a school, and lots of elderly folk. There he would take hostage several children and entrap them within the school, when a marine arrives he would demand a rowboat in exchange for the hostages. When the rowboat was brought, he would take one hostage with him all the way to the shoreline of the island, demand all marines to back off 200 yards release the hostage and sail off into the distance before any marines could catch him. So without much ado, Sylaar begins his walk from deep freeze to snow town. It’s about a 10 mile walk. While trotting along the slippery roads of Ice Nine, he notices a large shadowy figure lurking over a dry pine tree. Sylaar approaches it carefully, until he can see the outline of a giant polar bear, the polar bear roars loudly and stands on its 2 hind feet, as if letting Sylaar know that this is his territory. Sylaar has no choice but to engage in combat, because the bear is standing between him and his path to Snow town. Sylaar withdrew his two swords and stood his ground, waiting for the polar bear to make its move.
