Appearance
- Lilin is a diminutive woman with sharp, elfin features, who has carefully cultivated an off-putting appearance and general demeanor. The curved horns jutting out from her forehead and too-sharp teeth have caused many to label her as some sort of devil, and Lilin is in no hurry to correct them. Her bright, golden eyes with their peculiar diamond-shaped irises and pupils lend her wicked grins an unsettling air, and stand in sharp contrast to her dark hair. She’s a decidedly petite individual, standing at barely 4’8”, with an “underdeveloped” figure; her sharp, bird-like movements in combination with her small body can lead one to the reasonable but utterly misguided conclusion that she’s more delicate than she really is.
Lilin’s back is ornately decorated by a full-back tattoo; an exquisitely detailed piece of a demonic face surrounded by dark smoke. The tattoo extends up as far as her nape, and trails down the backs of her upper arms as far as a couple inches above her elbows.
The horned woman is rarely seen without some manner of tinted glasses and something to smoke. She favors a particular type of oddly large sunglasses that give the impression of a bug’s eyes for those glasses and a kiseru-style pipe, which she has long years of practice leaving between her teeth even while she’s going about doing other things or even speaking; it’s a truly rare sight to see her without that pipe or something equivalent hanging from her mouth. For clothes, Lilin favors Wano-style garments, typically wearing a haori and hakama, but she’s willing to change things up and wear clothes that better fit the islands she finds herself on. Lilin does have a preference for heavy footwear, with a particular love for combat boots. And to complete her look, she rarely goes out without applying some dark shade of lipstick.
Personality
- In a word, Lilin is… Peculiar. Of course, she has the excuse of being raised by a lone weirdo in the woods, but that doesn’t change the facts. But Lilin delights in her peculiarity, seeming more amused by the strange looks she receives from her odd mannerisms than anything, and is quick to laugh off comments about her behaviors.
She adores individuality, particularly her own; she’s not one to apologize for being herself. She similarly preaches an ideology of leaning into one’s own quirks, weirdness - the things that society would label you a “monster” for are things that Lilin embraces and advises others to embrace as well. As a result, she considers the Marines and the World Government as a whole to be her enemies on principle, as well as any other people or groups that would try to douse a person’s individuality.
Amongst her peculiarities is Lilin’s strange speech - she talks a mile a minute, using stilted phrasings and odd substitutions, most notably, using “tha” in place of “you”. Another peculiarity is her seeming refusal to sit down ordinarily; she prefers to perch on top of things instead, balancing with seeming ease even on unbalanced, thin, or unstable things - such as the high back of a chair.
Lilin is a fiery individual, and it’s easy to get her going. She’s quick to respond to taunts and challenges, and even quicker to issue them herself when she feels slighted. She respects the strong, something that can supersede even her innate hatred of the Marines, even if she doesn’t particularly like the individual in possession of that strength - though she’s still likely to challenge it anyway. She’s a lover of smoke and drink, and providing either (or both!) is a good way to get on her good side.
As it is a memento of her departed mother, Lilin is particularly attached to her kiseru, a long wood-and-bronze pipe. She keeps the pipe in excellent repair, and she is loath to give it up… Or even take it out of her mouth.
Skills & Talents
- Self-Sufficient
If left to her own devices for long enough, Lilin displays a remarkable ability to fend for herself, even to the point of being able to sustain herself through even incredibly harsh conditions. In particular, Lilin can cook and has a good eye for viable potential ingredients in her surroundings that can be used to throw something together… Even if it’s not particularly appetizing.
Wicked Tricks
- At first blush, Lilin may seem to be a rather ordinary swordswoman who makes use of her Enenra Mythical Zoan to grant her a further edge. However, this is a severe underestimation of her - the greatest weapon in Lilin’s arsenal is not any one of her tools, but the raw creativity and brutality with which she wields them all in combination, willing to try new things in pursuit of gaining any and every advantage she can grab. If she can’t overwhelm her opponent with raw strength and speed, then she can sure as hell frustrate them with a wide array of mythical tricks and transformations!
Aspects
- Devil’s Strength [Tier 3]
Lilin boasts incredible physical strength, far beyond what her diminutive frame should be capable of supporting. She’s all too happy to bring her inordinate strength to bear, blowing through all obstacles in her way with brute force.
- Devil’s Speed [Tier 2]
Lilin’s peculiar elfin frame lends itself well to unnerving, sharp, and swift movement, which she has further honed over the years to further outstrip her peers.
- Devil’s Stamina [Tier 2]
For as chaotic as Lilin is, one might expect her to burn out quickly - but nothing could be further from the truth. Her almost manic energy seems almost boundless, allowing her to simply go and go and go far beyond when others would need to stop and rest.
- Hedonist’s Recovery [Tier 1]
Even after facing a crushing defeat that leaves her battered and broken, or after she’s pushed herself to the point of exhaustion, Lilin is capable of recovering at inhuman speeds by simply giving herself over to the vices of gluttony and sloth - preferably including what should be an unhealthy supply of booze and smoke.
- Toxin Tolerance [Tier 1]
After years of ingesting increasingly unsafe substances, Lilin’s body has built up a shocking tolerance to all manner of toxins, such as poisons and venoms. While far from immune, she is able to shrug off or recover more quickly from what effects she does experience quite quickly.
- Evil Wind [Tier 2]
By applying her tremendous strength and unnerving speed to a peculiar swing of her blade, Lilin is able to deliver slashing attacks at a distance through eerily howling vacuum blades that travel through the air.
- Hollow Step [Tier 2]
By striking the air with ferocity and speed, Lilin has cultivated the ability to “step” on nothing at all, similar to the Rokushiki technique known as Geppo.
- Furious Step [Tier 2]
When her normal speed isn’t enough, Lilin has cultivated the ability to force herself through space at an even further heightened clip, allowing her to seemingly vanish before reappearing somewhere else. In truth, she is simply moving across that distance at speed that outstrips the average person’s ability to visually follow.
Color of Armament Haki Aspects
- Imbuement [Tier 2]
By allowing her will to flow through her body and pool, Lilin is capable of empowering her armaments with her Armament Haki.
- Hardening [Tier 2]
By coating her own form in an armor of concentrated willpower, Lilin is capable of empowering her own body with her Armament Haki.
Color of Observation Haki Aspects
- Intent Detection [Tier 2]
By paying attention to the will of the world around her, Lilin is capable of picking out the bloodlust and killing intent of others.
- Presence Sensing [Tier 2]
By paying attention to the will of the world around her, Lilin is able to pick up on the presence of others.
Odaki (雄滝) Aspects
A massive ōdachi, classified as one of the 50 Ryō Wazamono and renowned as a black blade. Coming in at a total length of 9' (~274 cm), Odaki is a positively titanic blade with few equals, at least in terms of sheer size and weight. The blade itself is black with a silvery-blue sheen when properly polished, along with a peculiar wave-and-foam pattern to the hamon - a trait it shares with its smaller "brother blade", Medaki.
Odaki’s handguard is a simple circle, at first glance, made of a darker steel to contrast with the blade - although it bears intricate, undulating etchings on the side of the hilt. The hilt itself is wrapped in a dark, royal blue silk, but is otherwise unadorned. The pommel, a relatively small end cap on the hilt, is made of the same darker steel as the handguard. Altogether, the hilt adds an additional 18" (~46 cm) to the length of the weapon.
The royal blue sheath is decorated with the shapes of silvery fish jumping along the sides, with a foam white, undulating line running through them, up and down the length of the sheath. Because of the blade’s size, the sheath is fairly heavy, even when empty.

- Crashing Weight [Tier 2]
As a result of its massive size, Odaki is almost comically heavy. Its name comes from this weight, as the blade is every bit as unstoppable as a roaring waterfall as it crashes downward… And it’s just as unwieldy as a waterfall in the hands of a novice. This weight can be put to great use in the hands of someone familiar with it, however, allowing them to make strikes with even greater force.
- Kokutō [Tier 3]
As a black blade, Odaki possesses an almost supernatural durability that allows it to withstand what would otherwise be impossible amounts of wear, tear, and punishment - without so much as a scratch marring its blade.
Mythical Zoan Form Aspects
- Shade of Envy (Dark Smoke Body) [Tier 1]
The Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Enenra’s Full-Beast transformation. This form is easily mistaken for the transformation of a Logia-class Devil Fruit as Lilin’s form shifts completely into the enenra’s mythical dark smoke. While her body may frequently take on aspects of her usual form - smoke billowing in the shape of a face or arms - she is just as capable of reshaping herself or simply existing as an amorphous cloud of dark smoke. Notably, as her body is made of a substance that at least can float through the air, she is capable of flight through her Shade of Envy.- Choke the Skies (Gigantification) [Tier 2]
Although the Shade of Envy is inherently amorphous and capable of expanding and contracting, Lilin is able to freely sustain an incredible mass of dark smoke all at once. Combined with other abilities, this can allow her to simply overwhelm vast areas with shocking control of her immense body.
- Choke the Skies (Gigantification) [Tier 2]
- Shade of Lust (Infernal Speed) [Tier 2]
The Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Enenra’s Half-Beast transformation. For Lilin, this form stands at 9’4” - twice her normal human height - and is best described as an otherworldly beauty. Her entire form is enhanced, idealized, and made greater - where her default form is diminutive, petite, and “underdeveloped”, her Shade of Lust form is incredibly tall and possesses rather generous curves. Her sharp and inhuman features are notably further accentuated, with her teeth and horns becoming even sharper, and her hair lengthens and takes on some of the properties of her dark smoke, causing it to float about almost as if she were perpetually underwater.
The most notable boon of this Shade, however, is the boosted speed it affords her, allowing her to move and strike with an utterly unnatural swiftness.- Immoral Flexibility [Tier 2]
Lilin’s Shade of Lust transformation, despite being solid flesh and blood, boasts an inhuman level of flexibility - her body is capable of twisting and bending at odd angles without harm or effort, almost like smoke.
- Immoral Flexibility [Tier 2]
- Shade of Gluttony (Pure Darkness Production) [Tier 2]
By refining the smoke out of her dark smoke, Lilin is left with only the truly mythical portion of the enenra’s substance - the darkness itself. A strange substance, somewhere between liquid and gas in consistency, that boasts the mythical property of fully absorbing all light that gives it the unnerving appearance of a void in whatever space it occupies. This Shade is entirely focused on the production of the darkness on its own, generating and shaping it into new forms.
While in this Shade, Lilin appears like a living silhouette, even though her body still exists in traditional space. Her form doesn’t seem to outwardly change much before the production of more darkness, though, only gaining a few inches of height - standing at 5’2” - and her hands take on a more claw-like appearance.- Pure Darkness Manipulation [Tier 2]
Lilin boasts fine control over the raw darkness she can produce using her Shade of Gluttony, allowing her to form it into weapons and tools.
- Stable Constructs [Tier 1]
While her darkness is naturally prone to dispersing in time, Lilin is capable of ensuring her darkness creations remain stable over time, acting more like a solid if she so chooses, even after being removed from her direct influence.
- Pure Darkness Manipulation [Tier 2]
- Shade of Sloth (Bloated Body) [Tier 2]
A hulking, monstrous transformation that sacrifices the immense versatility of Lilin’s other Shades in order to emphasize raw physical presence. By transforming her body’s internal structures into dark smoke and producing an absolutely absurd amount of the mythical substance in her body, Lilin takes on a bloated, bestial form.
The Shade of Sloth stands 20 feet tall, though appears a bit shorter due to a hunched-forward posture to accommodate Lilin’s massive, longer arms that naturally rest on the ground, supporting her body in much the same way as gorillas. Her horns and fingers all grow longer and sharper, more wicked, and both transition into darkness about midway down their length. Her horns curve more dramatically backward, framing her lengthened and wilder hair in this form. However, the greatest change overall is her normally petite body becoming incredibly large as the dark smoke pulls her skin and muscle taut.
The absence of anything substantial inside causes her body to behave like a drum - and taking incredibly powerful blows in this form causes Lilin to spew dark smoke from her mouth and her form to deflate a bit. This is the true focus of this Shade, as the lack of internal structure and tension create a sort of simulated toughness, allowing her to take serious punishment and keep on going.
Mythical Zoan Aspects
- Dark Smoke Production [Tier 2]
The enenra’s mythical substance - dark smoke, is made up of two component parts - smoke mixed with a strange, soot-like substance that exhibits the properties of both gas and liquid known simply as darkness. This latter substance is what is actually responsible for the mythical properties of the dark smoke. Light and heat cannot escape from this darkness, which absorbs them fully; this additionally grants the dark smoke the appearance of a void in space, as no light can be reflected off of it. As the current user of this Fruit, Lilin is capable of generating seemingly endless amounts of dark smoke from her body.
- Dark Smoke Manipulation [Tier 2]
Lilin is capable of controlling the dark smoke she’s produced, allowing her to shape it to her whims and even control its density.
- Dense Darkness [Tier 2]
By manipulating the density of the mythical darkness within her dark smoke, Lilin is capable of causing it to take on the properties of a solid - granting the substance shocking durability without sacrificing its versatility.
Techniques
- Ikijigoku (Living Hell)
[Devil’s Strength, Devil’s Speed, Crashing Weight]
A powerful slash that rends through defenses as easily as flesh and bone, utilizing Lilin’s inordinate strength, speed, and the weight of her ōdachi.
- Ryōchi (Thousand Cuts)
[Devil’s Strength, Devil’s Speed, Shade of Lust - Infernal Speed, Shade of Lust - Immoral Flexibility, Crashing Weight]
By employing her Shade of Lust transformation to further bolster her speed and flexibility, Lilin launches into a series of high-speed, fluid slashing attacks, hammering and carving away at her foes. This technique can be equally effectively employed as a form of crowd control or as a way to overwhelm a single foe.- Reppū (Violent Wind)
[Furious Step, Devil’s Strength, Devil’s Speed, Shade of Lust - Infernal Speed, Shade of Lust - Immoral Flexibility, Crashing Weight]
Setting off at a speed beyond what the naked eye can track, Lilin utilizes her Shade of Lust’s inhuman flexibility and raw speed to “bounce” her immensely heavy blade back and forth at speeds that would otherwise be near impossible, carving a bloody path through her foes.
- Reppū (Violent Wind)
- Akuran (Wicked Storm)
[Devil’s Strength, Devil’s Speed, Evil Wind]
With a two-handed grip on her blade, Lilin carves a crescent-shaped blade through the air and sends it screeching ahead with immense speed and power.
- Daizai (Grave Sin)
[Devil’s Strength, Devil’s Speed, Crashing Weight, Kokutō]
A defensive maneuver with deceptive offensive potential, in which Lilin moves her heavy blade to meet an incoming attack at the last moment. Her speed, strength, and the sheer weight of her blade combine to create a bone-shaking counterattack.
- Hazumi (Impulse)
[Furious Step]
With a hitch or a skip in her already oddly bird-like steps, Lilin pushes off the ground with an absurd amount of force and speed, allowing her to momentarily move faster than the naked eye can follow.
- Toppū (Squall)
[Hollow Step]
Measured speed and force allow Lilin to temporarily force even empty air to act like a solid surface, just long enough for her to get her footing and propel herself forward.
- Akufū (Raging Wind)
[Hollow Step, Furious Step]
When a simple sudden mid-air redirection isn’t enough, Lilin combines the principles of her Hazumi and Toppū techniques - stepping off the air with such speed that she seems to vanish and reappear at her destination, moving faster than the naked eye can follow.
- Oshikorosu (Stifle to Death)
[Dark Smoke Production, Dark Smoke Manipulation]
Surrounding her targets in dark smoke, Lilin suddenly manipulates the substance until it acts more like a solid than a gas, such that those caught within are stuck, unable to move out.- Gokushi (Death in Jail)
[Dark Smoke Production, Dark Smoke Manipulation, Dense Darkness]
When merely holding a target still isn’t enough, Lilin produces dark smoke to cover them, solidifies it - then goes a step beyond, manipulating the darkness within the smoke until it acts more like solid metal than anything, before squeezing it around her target until they’re unable to move even an inch.
- Gokushi (Death in Jail)
- Uzumaki (Curling Smoke)
[Dark Smoke Production, Dark Smoke Manipulation]
Holding her empty hand out, Lilin nurtures a swirling tornado of dark smoke in her palm, then launches it forward as an unnaturally dense twister traveling forward. The extra density of the twisting column of smoke lends it an extra level of destructive potential. After a short while, the twister simply stops, launching those things that were caught within outward in random directions.
- Mauken (Dancing Blade)
[Dark Smoke Manipulation, Crashing Weight]
By manipulating the space covered in her dark smoke, Lilin picks up her immensely heavy blade and sends it rapidly spinning, like a horrible saw, through the air - aiming to make the most out of the choking smoke, lack of visibility, and the weight of Odaki to overwhelm her captured targets.
- Onidaiko (Demon Drum)
[Shade of Sloth - Bloated Body, Dark Smoke Production, Dense Darkness, Devil’s Strength]
Capitalizing on the bizarre physiology of her Shade of Sloth, Lilin further bloats her body with dark smoke and tenses her muscles in response to an incoming blow such that she takes the attack and bounces it back, rather than simply absorbing it - much like a drum. This can also be used offensively to empower a physical blow Lilin is about to deliver. This technique produces an oddly satisfying DON~! with each rebound.
- Onidora (Demon Gong)
[Shade of Sloth - Bloated Body, Dark Smoke Production, Dark Smoke Manipulation, Dense Darkness, Furious Step, Devil’s Strength]
While in her Shade of Sloth form, Lilin bloats her arm taut with extraordinarily dense dark smoke, then launches herself at a speed beyond what the naked eye can follow - reappearing at the moment her enlarged fist makes impact with her target. The strange nature of her bloated body combined with her raw speed combine to cause immense knockback potential, as well as producing a thundering DON~! on impact.
- Oniwana (Demon Snare)
[Shade of Sloth - Bloated Body, Pure Parkness Production, Dark Smoke Manipulation, Dense Darkness]
Capitalizing on the bizarre physiology of her Shade of Sloth, Lilin takes a blow head-on - and allows the force of it to forcibly expel dark smoke through her mouth, causing the blow to sink into her deflated body. This odd defense blunts the worst of an attack and grants Lilin the opportunity to ensnare whoever struck her in solidified dark smoke for their efforts.
- Oniyari (Demon Spear)
[Shade of Sloth - Bloated Body, Dark Smoke Production, Pure Darkness Manipulation, Dense Darkness, Devil’s Strength, Devil’s Speed]
Utilizing the large and strange body of her Shade of Sloth, Lilin allows a target to get in close or grabs ahold of a target, then opens her mouth and sends a lance of pure darkness shooting forward to pierce through their body.
- Kage-e (Shadow Play)
[Shade of Gluttony - Pure Darkness Production, Pure Darkness Manipulation, Dense Darkness]
Utilizing the ability to produce pure darkness of her Shade of Gluttony, Lilin creates a basic void-black armament out of the mythical substance. When making use of this technique, she tacks on the name of what she is aiming to replicate to the end, such as Kage-e: Tate when creating a shield.- Kage-e: Odaki (Shadow Play: Odaki)
[Shade of Gluttony - Pure Darkness Production, Pure Darkness Manipulation, Dense Darkness, Crashing Weight]
Lilin employs her pure darkness to create a silhouette replica of her immense ōdachi, Odaki. While she is unable to replicate the blade’s durability as a kokutō, she is able to simulate the blade’s sheer weight by manipulating the density of her darkness.
- Kage-e: Kaiki (Shadow Play: Total Eclipse)
[Shade of Gluttony - Pure Darkness Production, Pure Darkness Manipulation, Dense Darkness]
By producing and manipulating her pure darkness, Lilin creates a massive ball of the mythical substance at the end of a chain-like limb - the void armament she calls Kaiki. This immense ball can be split open like a gigantic, spiky-toothed maw, allowing it to bite into targets or even devour them whole, leaving them trapped within Kaiki.- Kaiki: Kaitenmokuba (Total Eclipse: Carousel)
[Pure Darkness Manipulation, Devil’s Strength, Devil’s Speed]
Lilin employs her speed and strength to begin spinning the massive void armament known as Kaiki around her body - slamming it into and through the world around her. Foes trapped within Kaiki are subject to pitch blackness and being rudely thrown around within the ball, but better there than being trapped on the outside in its teeth and being directly slammed into everything. Additional instances of Kaiki only add to the devil’s fun!
- Kaiki: Kaitenmokuba (Total Eclipse: Carousel)
- Kage-e: Kyōchō (Shadow Play: Evil Omen)
[Shade of Gluttony - Pure Darkness Production, Pure Darkness Manipulation, Dense Darkness, Stable Constructs]
By producing and manipulating her pure darkness, Lilin fashions an immense firearm, somewhere between a sniper rifle and a cannon - the void armament she calls Kyōchō. This void armament fires appropriately-sized, void-black shells that maintain their shape even after being launched.- Kyōchō: Hōkō (Evil Omen: Howl)
[Pure Darkness Manipulation, Devil’s Strength, Devil’s Speed, Dense Darkness, Stable Constructs]
Taking aim with the void armament Kyōchō, Lilin lets loose an incredibly destructive shot with the massive makeshift firearm. Despite the name, this technique is eerily silent.
- Kyōchō: Hōkō (Evil Omen: Howl)
- Kage-e: Kakon (Shadow Play: Root of Evil)
[Shade of Gluttony - Pure Darkness Production, Pure Darkness Manipulation, Dense Darkness]
By producing and manipulating her pure darkness, Lilin creates a long, wicked-looking trident with barbed prongs - the void armament she calls Kakon. The weapon’s head can be spun at high speed with only Lilin’s manipulation of her mythical substance.- Kakon: Kusshin (Root of Evil: Excavation)
[Pure Darkness Manipulation, Devil’s Strength, Devil’s Speed, Dense Darkness]
Rapidly spinning the head of the void armament Kakon, Lilin thrusts forward with the wicked weapon, carving into a target with the power of a destructive drill.
- Kakon: Kusshin (Root of Evil: Excavation)
- Kage-e: Akugō (Shadow Play: Evil Deed)
[Shade of Gluttony - Pure Darkness Production, Pure Darkness Manipulation, Dense Darkness, Stable Constructs]
Utilizing her Shade of Gluttony’s ability to produce and shape pure darkness, Lilin reaches outward with a tentacle-like arm of the mythical substance to grab at a target - and then her hand transforms into a shackle while her arm transforms into a chain before ceasing to be her limb as it becomes the void armament Akugō, boasting a hardness like steel. While Lilin can utilize this technique to keep a target chained to herself, she can also detach the chain from her body and embed it into a surface or attach the other end to someone or something else.
- Kage-e: Kagemusha (Shadow Play: Body Double)
[Shade of Gluttony - Pure Darkness Production, Pure Darkness Manipulation]
By producing and manipulating her pure darkness, Lilin shapes a second silhouette of herself in space - as if one Lilin weren’t bad enough. This double remains connected to Lilin via a “leash” of darkness and takes some of her concentration to maintain and direct, but otherwise functions exactly like a copy of the original, even being able to be reshaped to appear more similar to one of her other Shades.
- Kage-e: Makyō (Shadow Play: Devil Mirror)
[Shade of Gluttony - Pure Darkness Production, Pure Darkness Manipulation]
While in her Shade of Gluttony, Lilin utilizes the sheer flexibility of a body made of darkness to twist and manipulate her shape - taking on the appearance in silhouette of another, at least in shape and size.
- Kage-e: Odaki (Shadow Play: Odaki)
- Garigarimōja (Selfish Dead)
[Shade of Gluttony - Pure Darkness Production, Pure Darkness Manipulation, Dense Darkness, Devil's Strength]
Lilin creates numerous arms of pure darkness, sprouting from her shoulders and upper back and stretching outward to grasp at the world around her with immense strength in each and every finger.
- Zanzai (Execution by Decapitation)
[Shade of Gluttony - Pure Darkness Production, Pure Darkness Manipulation, Dense Darkness, Devil’s Strength, Devil’s Speed]
While above her target, Lilin transforms an arm or leg into a massive curved blade - then propels it downward with immense force, like an executioner’s blade.
- Chikusō (Bamboo Spear)
[Shade of Gluttony - Pure Darkness Production, Pure Darkness Manipulation, Dense Darkness, Devil’s Strength, Devil’s Speed]
Stabbing an appendage of pure darkness through the ground, Lilin launches an attack from below by sending it suddenly and violently shooting upward, aiming to stab through her target.
Background
- Born the elder of a set of twins, Lilin was quickly discarded by her superstitious family due to her inhuman appearance and unnatural quiet; even during her own birth, the girl was silent. Mere days after her birth, her parents left the strange girl out to die in the jungle beyond the town they lived in. Her story might have ended there if it weren’t for a peculiar old woman who happened upon her and took pity on the girl - a hermit by the name of Lilith Salem who made her home deep in Raito Island’s jungles.
Despite greatly valuing her privacy, Salem took the abandoned girl in - moved mostly by disgust at how easily her parents discarded her. Though she’d never admit it out loud, Salem came to love the strange child as her own as she raised her through the years. They were ever an odd pair; an old woman with shaded spectacles, a great big curved blade resting on her shoulder, and a long pipe hanging from her mouth and the too-quiet, too-small horned girl with the odd golden eyes, and most of the island’s people gave them a wide berth even when they made their occasional trips into towns.
Lilin grew quickly. Almost too quickly, in fact… Though, not very much in height. Salem began sending her into towns to pick up supplies on her own when Lilin was barely older than 2; at first, she accompanied Lilin on these trips so far as the edge of town to ensure that none of the beasts of the jungle jumped her, but Salem quickly recognized that the beasts seemed to avoid the girl. After verifying this, Salem was more than happy to let Lilin traipse through the jungles on her own and run her errands for her. If Lilin ever had an issue with this arrangement, running errands for the strange old woman who took her in, she never voiced a complaint about it.
The people in those towns always piqued her curiosity, however. Though she was content to sit back and listen and watch whenever she was sent to town, Lilin was consumed with a burning curiosity about the whispered words and odd looks she received from those strangers. And yet, it never occurred to her to go up and ask - and it was only when she turned 7 that Lilin came face-to-face with the reality of the situation. Shortly after arriving in town as she always did, a group of other children - her own twin sister among them - began to throw insults and objects at the small horned girl, calling her all manner of nasty things until they drove her back out of town with tears in her eyes. Lilin didn’t understand why they’d cheered after doing such a mean thing, or why they’d keep her from doing what she needed for her mother.
After a day with Lilin being missing, Salem approached the town and found the girl quite falling apart, having thought she couldn’t come home empty-handed and unsure of what to do since the other children had driven her out of town. Salem carried Lilin home, where she finally pried the story from the distraught child. After hearing out what had happened, Salem laughed - and told Lilin that yes, she was a monster, just like her. Such began Salem’s odd idea of parenting, encouraging Lilin to embrace those things that made her different and unnerved others, to turn them into a strength such that they could never be a weakness. Salem spoke of a world far beyond the jungles that had been the entire world Lilin knew, of vast oceans and all manner of unusual people and powers. Freaks who were far beyond what the little people, content to live their days out in the towns on Raito, could even imagine, and whose strength would make the townsfolk seem as insignificant as ants.
After a few days to think about all of this, Lilin approached Salem and asked her to show her how to become a real monster. To this, Salem could only laugh, but wholeheartedly agreed.
Over the next few years, Lilin was put through rigorous training. Her small and frail body was pushed beyond its limits until she bore a strength that rivaled men thrice her size, her oddly birdlike movements honed into self-assured speed. Salem taught her to take every last advantage she could get: to fight fast, to fight brutal, to fight dirty. From simple exercises and manual labor, to training on how to wield a blade, to going out and hunting the beasts of the jungle, to sparring with Salem herself - Lilin advanced by leaps and bounds, devoting herself to training and improving herself with a fervor unlike anything she’d ever displayed. And the next time she went into town, with a blade carried confidently on her shoulder, she grinned and sneered at those other children who had previously driven her out, laughing as they turned tail and fled from her.
Lilin and Salem were content with their peace, and they might have lived together off in the middle of the jungle as an odd little family for many years to come... But this wasn’t meant to be. Lilin’s growth into a true monster drew more and more attention to her over the years, and her readiness to brandish her blade to silence those who dared to try bullying her to her face didn’t help matters. It all came to a head on the day of Lilin’s 16th birthday - ordinarily, Salem had little interest in celebrating either of their days of birth, considering it a ridiculous notion, but she had been adamant about wishing to celebrate Lilin’s 16th for whatever reason. The horned girl was sent into town to pick up a cake and some booze for the event; a simple errand. She arrived in town and was quickly met by a mob, wielding crude weapons and guns.
Lilin was driven from town once more, covered in cuts, bruises, and burns, and the townsfolk cheered as they sent her into the depths of the jungle that they did not dare brave. Salem dressed the girl’s wounds in silence when she returned home, then gave Lilin a smile, a tube of lipstick, and directions to where her present was hidden, buried somewhere secret and safe within Raito’s jungles. Lilin watched her mother head for the door, picking up her favorite ōdachi and pipe, then turn back to her and tell her she’d be back from running an errand of her own soon.
Following the directions led Lilin to an odd little chest buried at the base of a massive tree, containing an odd fruit - from Salem’s stories, a Devil Fruit. A unique power, all her own. Lilin wasn’t a fool; she devoured it all in one go, ignoring every fiber of her being that screamed the horrid flesh was poison, then ran through the jungle toward the town Salem had headed off toward. The one she’d been driven from earlier that day.
Lilin arrived far too late to have any say in the outcome. Salem’s corpse, riddled with bullets, was slumped over her own blade in the center of the burning wreckage that had once been a town, a grin plastered on her face. The horned girl lost control of herself and her newfound power, choking the town in dark smoke that mercifully put out the fires. After several days, that choking cloud of smoke vanished from the town, along with Salem’s body. The townsfolk who survived and those in other settlements on Raito would go on to speak of the event in hushed whispers, about the jungle devils who had descended upon their town, visiting them with incredible violence before casting a cloud that blotted out the sun for days; it became almost an legend on the island, inspiring stories that would be passed on to children to get them to behave lest the jungle monsters come out and tear them asunder, recited by people too ignorant to see how they might’ve been monsters themselves.
Lilin buried Salem behind their quaint home in the jungle, marking her grave with the blade she’d carried into town that day. She stood there a while before going to scour the home, taking with her those things she could wear or fit into a bag. An ōdachi, a few pairs of oddly-shaped sunglasses, clothes… And, after a moment’s hesitation, a wood-and-bronze long pipe. With nothing left on Raito worth sticking around for, Lilin boarded the first ship she found, commandeered the vessel with sheer strength and Devil Fruit ability, and set out to that great wide world she’d first heard of from Salem so long ago with nary a second look back at the island that had been her home.
She quickly became a known menace to the Marines - the peculiar young woman with too-sharp teeth, curved horns, over-large tinted glasses, an ōdachi resting on her shoulder, and a lit pipe hanging from her mouth, always accompanied by supernaturally dense and dark smoke and all too eager to cut down Marines on sight. The “Smoking Devil” epithet was coined rather early on in her career, and caught on quickly, appearing on the girl’s first wanted poster only a year after leaving Raito.
Lilin drifted from place to place for years, never quite finding that place she could call home; she tried her stint as a Revolutionary but found nothing in common with their high-minded ideals. Bandits thought too small, and criminal families were far too regimented for her personal style. No, Lilin found the most in common with pirates, sailing their vessels across the waves - but no captain could command her respect. During this time, drifting from crew to crew, she encountered the professional thief known as Melady Ophelia, over and over and over again. Though the two didn’t get along during their first few meetings, encountering one another over the years led to building a rapport that did become a true friendship in time.
It was a chance encounter that brought Lilin to a crew captained by a certain woman. She did what no one else had been able to - to capture and keep Lilin’s interest. Lilin served her crew, the Shoguns, for a time and came to care for them. Just as she was realizing her commitment to the crew, however, disaster struck as they were overwhelmed by the power of a vengeful Warlord. The crew was utterly destroyed, the captain that Lilin had respected lost to the sea and the majority of her fellow Shoguns scattered. Accompanied only by Ophelia - who she had reunited with - and the octopus fishwoman Tally, Lilin set to drift once again, frustrated and angry at the world that had taken yet another woman she’d admired from her.
But her story was far from done. On the island of Jaya, Lilin and her remaining companions chanced across the Big Sis Pirates. A conflict borne from the desire to test their captain, Grimm-Rosa D. Scarlette, resulted in Lilin deciding to throw her lot in with this group of pirates. Now, Lilin is eager to see if Scarlette can live up to her expectations…
