Dagon has a long-held problem with expressing emotions and connecting with other people. People and relationships are a mystery to him. Rather than say something positive or negative Dagon prefers to express himself via cooking or fighting.

One of Dagon's goals is to free his fishman grandfather from slavery. Growing up hearing about the slave trade from both of his parents have imprinted with him a desire to see that particular institution abolished.

Background
Dagon is the first born of a wounded, out of commission marine sniper Sarin Basquiat and a hermit, punk musician and jerk of all trades named Croin on the island of Pirate's Market in the South Blue.
He was trained in a drunken form of fishman karate by Croin in the foggy forests of Pirates Market far from the full humans his half fishman father despised. Little did the child know, his father was barely competent in the family style and counted on Dagon's innate talent, a book of techniques Croin recorded but could not perform, and faith in the Sea Devils to carry his first born through.
Dagon had been raised to revere the Sea Devils as deities and devil fruits as sacraments. Croin was a Sea Devil Cultist after all. His untalented father did his best to shape him into a weapon to be pointed at slavers in order to rescue, or more than likely, avenge the grandfather he was named for kidnapped decades ago.
Sarin Basquiat, whom provided Dagon with a great deal of his strength and all of his looks, tried to pass on her love of projectile weapons and firearms but soon noticed her son had an undeniably bad aim and worse no interest in such things. How they bonded was through a taste for spicy food, looks, and a love for music...particularly Croin's singing whose lack of martial prowess was more than compensated for by the voice of an angel hymning the virtues of drunken violence.
As time passed Dagon found not only a comfort from learning martial arts but a near obsession. After a particularly brutal sparring session where a young Dagon unknowingly broke three of his father's ribs which never healed properly many of the sparring duties and lessons were taken up by a friend of his parents, a looming cyborg okama by the name of Arkady Kuznetsov.
Arkady became the first non-related person that Dagon had any affection for. While in the throes of Dagon's puberty Arkady explained okama culture and passed on her philosophy that "Not every okama knows one another, but every okama should." As Dagon grew closer to his mentor he took to wearing makeup and women's clothes as long as they were comfortable. The fact that walking around in lipstick and a skirt when in town prompted fights was simply a bonus.
Dagon immediately became close to his little brother Zenit who inherited their father's tendency towards insulting people, his inability to fight out out of them but a talent for singing that the elder Basquiat brother always envied. They were a duo known for starting and then ending trouble when together.
One day after picking the wrong fight and ending up in a short coma the teen decided to rethink his life and decided to go out to sea to discover what different fighting styles the world had to offer. Getting a job with his adopted Aunt Arkady as a low level jack-of-all trades criminal with no particular talents aside from fighting but a lot of underworld connections via his mentor.
During that time Dagon fell in love with a martial art Arkady practiced known as rokushiki who after years of criminal work outed herself as an undercover marine. Being a family friend, Arkady meant to show Dagon the futility of crime firsthand and how dirty working for the marines got.
The lesson Dagon gleaned from the experience was that there was no particular difference between marines and pirates, but the former had a more interesting and cohesive martial art.
Therefore, the young man joined the marines despite having little interest in taking orders, uniforms, or justice in general.
After basic training, the fight loving okama seemed like a front line fighter and utterly without tact or guile but signed up to work for Marine Intelligence out of a sense of spite for everyone who joked about how ill-suited he was to the task.
