The voyage had been quite long. Longer than Alice had really been expecting, though not by too much she supposed. At nights when there was only a skeleton crew manning the ship, Alice would slip out of the barrel that she’d hidden away in and sneak out to pinch some food here and there for herself and Myles. It was fairly standard Marine rations as she couldn’t really take the chance to actually cook. It left her wanting more, and bored to tears during the day. When the day came that the shuffling above deck resembled the sounds of a ship coming ashore, Alice couldn’t have been more relieved.
She waited until her barrel was unloaded from the ship to carve a hole into the side of the barrel with a claw and peek out. The Marines milled around before suddenly running off in a hurry, leaving only a few to continue unloading the ship. Huh. Strange. But Alice wasn’t going to complain about an opportunity to make her getaway. When the coast was clear, she popped off the top of the barrel, forming her metal legs underneath her.
“Finally, dry… land?”
Alice squinted and looked around. Tall mangroves towered over even the ship they’d rode in on, and bubbles floated around on the breeze. Alice stared for a moment and then pinched herself. Nope, definitely awake, though with the dreamlike atmosphere around her, she still had her doubts. Not one to linger, she hopped out of the barrel, crouching down behind some boxes and slowly making her way over to Myles’s box.
“Sugarplum, you awake? It’s time to go,” she called out softly, “I don’t… this isn’t Arabara, so just… brace yourself.”
Alice knew where this was to be honest. She just… didn’t really believe it. Why here of all places? How? She was certain that she’d heard the crew of the ship talking about Arabara, not the Sabaody Archipelago! This was probably, objectively, the worst place in the world for two escaped former slaves - and former revolutionary - to wind up.
