Streetlights glinted off the puddles on the street, the light drizzle pattering in time with the clamoring footsteps of the many passerby. Refuse blocked access to certain alleys, and zoned-out users lay sprawled against walls or curled up in bolted doorways cackling.
It was foul here, both in smell and aura. A palpable miasma of human misery lay thick on every inch of this place, quite literally known as Corruption City. Bupae was a city in thrall to the Red Sparrow Trading Company, and if you looked you could see the marker of the company on boxes, vials, and even hidden on the corner of businesses, pubs, restaurants and brothels. It was an omnipresent sign to all who lived here:
The Red Sparrow owns you, and everything that you see.
Through this pit of a city strode a raincoated figure, hat pressed firmly on her head. Moving through the swarm of outsiders doing business and avoiding catching the eye of any of the poorer locals, Lassa glanced to the sides of the street as she moved.
As someone trained in medicine, she had been dispatched to the island to get a first-hand look at the Fairy Dusk substance that kept all the residents subservient and occupied. It was clearly massively addictive, but not much else was known. Samples had been taken before, but there was a theory that the mixture was being changed in order to keep ahead of the citizen's tolerance and attempts to produce it by imitators.
Heading down a staircase set into the ground, Lassa entered a Fairy Dusk den. Removing her hat, she gave a quick shake of the raincoat in the doorway and headed over to the counter. Raising an eyebrow, she placed some cash on the table. "Here on business, have to try the House Special, no?"
The man at the counter snorted, looking unimpressed, but portioned out a small chunk of the refined resin that made the drug. "Take a table, don't cause a fuss or we throw you out on your ass." he grumbled, waving Lassa off.
Taking the wrapped brick of resin towards an empty table with a hookah on it, Lassa's eyes swept over the room. Some people who looked up as she passed got a nod, some got a neutral stare, and a few got a wink. Indeed, she even caught movement out of the corner of her eye and said, perhaps without fully considering the character she was inhabiting:
"Hello there, gorgeous. Any tips for a novice?"
