Zasha #8
“Perhaps so,” she replied. Time was not on the writer’s side it seemed, Chalkydri Zasha had understood this, but having to cut her story short was perhaps just as painful for her as it was for him. There was so much to say! So much praise to give! Alas, the time to part had come, the gentleman’s eyes cast their gaze upon the supposed leader of the roguish band in the opposing cell, though no further words were exchanged between them. Once again, it was the oppressive silence of her cell that accompanied her.
Alone again, she knelt and began to pray, but that little bit of solace was one again interrupted, though this time by something different. She heard the movement first, before any of the words were spoken, but by the time she looked up again her eyes could see at least half of the inmates of the opposing cell — even a few from the cells neighbouring theirs that she could see — were now looking at her with curious and contemplative eyes.“My Lady… One day,” Jacob spoke up:
“I would like to see ‘Welkin’s Limit’…”
“If your God is whoever’s strong enough to take the position,” Wu, the largest of the inmates, said, visibly shaking his head after a moment of quiet, morose thought. “What’s stopped outsiders from taking over?” he asked, actually giving Miss Chalkydri the courtesy of eye contact as he turned himself in the cell. Though he’d previously scoffed at the idea, he now seemed a little more willing to entertain the notion, perhaps because her story had heralded some foundations that were much more realistic than the concepts of angels and deities.
“Very few outsiders have ever reached Welkin’s Limit,” Zasha answered, pausing to think for a moment. “In fact, none have done so in my lifetime — of that I am sure,” she added, aware of her homeland’s isolationist tendencies and the likely effects that would have had on its interactions with others.“And why is that? Is it atop the Red Line?”“No,” the unusual angel confirmed:
“It rests upon a cloud, and–”
“Pffft…!” Wu snorted and laughed, much to Zasha’s initial confusion. It was only when the warden banged upon the bars of the group’s cell that he managed to stifle his hysterics, though in doing so had sworn the entirety of the jail to silence. By Zasha’s book, that was fine, and thus the quiet of the following hours passed her by.—— A FEW HOURS LATER ——“Don’t be afraid,” she said:
“My boss decided to save you.”
“Your ‘boss’?” Zasha questioned as the warden found the key to the shackles that had bound her wings. The feel of the chains falling free was a relieving one, she had to admit, letting a small sigh of gratitude escape her mouth as she stretched them as much as the building’s interior would allow. “Well,” she continued, offering a courteous bow to both the warden and the strange woman. “In that case I offer my thanks to you and your boss, whomever they may be. Though, if I am to be allowed my freedom, might I inquire as to who you are and what has become of my possessions…?”{Post Synopsis:—}
Zasha answers a little more to Jacob and a strangely curious Captain Wu, but is later set free by Eve!
