Yanmei #1
Navigation was not Zhu Yanmei’s strongest suit. Piloting a ship was not Zhu Yanmei’s strongest suit. And, to be frank, not a lot of things related to voyaging on the ocean were, either. All the same, it hadn’t stopped her so far, and her small sailing dinghy had somehow survived her best — as well as unintentional — attempts to sabotage it. As it was now, the late afternoon of a rather dreary day of sailing had been uneventful, with a steady seaborn mist starting to take hold and blot out the sun’s still rather intense rays.
Droplets of salty, airborne damp did their utmost to cling to Miss Zhu’s face and hair as she, likewise, did her best to adjust the sail’s angle. Winds had shifted rather drastically, but so too had they started to die, leaving very little left to work with. Her best bet, as she had somehow discovered, was to steady the sail and cruise for at least another hour, assuming she’d gotten the right heading — a bold assumption given previous error. It didn’t take long for her to realise a small issue, and from it create a bigger one.Shrrriiip…!
“Oops…,” she uttered, jade green eyes watching in equal parts shock and confusion as a large tear in the midst of the sail formed. With little else in the way of coaxing, said tear managed to become an entire hole, rendering the fabric useless and swiftly impacting the boat’s speed. To make matters worse, cold mist and a now greyed radiance from the sun had turned her surroundings rather eerie, and that was just the beginning.
“Hmm… Oh! Maybe I can sew the sail back together,” Mei chirped, palming a fist. Almost immediately, as if in response to her physical display, the entire dinghy shook, sending her tumbling forward across the deck. “Oof! Hey! Watch where you’re– Huh?” Angst washed away almost immediately as she peered through the mist, for what had been a wall of grey just moments prior was now a wall of timber — the flank of a ship far larger than her own measly marine transport whose silhouette seemed to blend with the ghastly fog. In the calmed waters, such a vessel barely rocked, its woodwork groaning softly.“Ooo~! Hello…?” she waited:
“Nobody heard me…? Hmph!”
A length of rope, its end tied with a simple hook, soon found itself in the girl’s grasp as she tried to toss it at the ship’s obscured railings. Once, twice, but the third was the charm — metal found purchase upon sturdy guards. With a firm tug to make sure the line was secure, and making sure her weapon was bound to her waist, Yanmei pressed a foot against the wood and started to climb in a fashion that was far from stealthy…“Anybody… there?”{Post Synposis:}
Yanmei ends up bumping her boat into the side of a ship, proceeding to investigate!
