“Just hold still! This won’t take much longer.” Beryl’s voice was tired and slightly frustrated but still tempered with a waning patience. She held long locks of hair in each hand, trying to remember where exactly she had left off in the braid. It was a kind of complicated weave, and she didn’t want to have to start over. Again.
In front of her was another mermaid, sitting on a rock, tapping her fin impatiently. She was Muriel, Beryl’s tank mate. In the months that Beryl had spent here, she had learned a few things about Muriel. One, that she was a goldfish mermaid. Two, that she was from somewhere called the Ryugu Kingdom. When Beryl had told Muriel that she’d never heard of it, Muriel had been incredulous and asked where she was from. When Beryl told her, she was met with disbelief.
Still, despite that, the two had managed to learn to tolerate one another well enough. No, the person that she was closest to here was actually the little mermaid in the tank adjacent to theirs. Sometimes, in the dead of night, Beryl would jump from her tank into the child’s tank to visit and spend time with her. Tying up the ends of Muriel’s hair, Beryl let out a soft sigh and backed away to examine her work.
She’d braided the hair along the sides to meet up at the back and go down. Looked good. With a little pat on the shoulder, Beryl swam up to the top of the tank and pulled herself onto the little ornamental rock they’d put in the tank for them. A few flaps of her large wings dried them as she folded them up on her back.
Muriel wanted to look her best for the auction that they’d be going to tomorrow. She wanted to go to a high class owner who would care for her better than their current one. As for Beryl, she just felt anxious about it on the whole. If they were moved, the odds of her brother finding her… of anyone finding her went way down.
She bit her lip, glancing over to the neighboring tank, hoping to catch a glimpse of her little neighbor. She had a plan. A super risky one, but Beryl wasn’t taking the chance that her brother or someone else would find her in time. No, she had to do this. And then she had to see what had become of her pirate friends. Stewart… she hoped that he was okay.
Stewart was very much not okay. He was locked up in a cell on one of the Silver Islands. He wasn’t really sure which. The rest of his crew was here as well. That much he’d been able to ascertain over the past months. Some of them hadn’t made it, which really set a fire in his belly, but as if things just had to get worse, none of them knew what had become of their little mermaid friend Beryl. He shuddered to think what had happened to her.
Unfortunately, he had bigger things to worry about. Their trials had all finished up by now and their sentence had been handed down. Execution. Damn. It was looking grim. He didn’t want to die like this. He let out a terse sigh, pinching the bridge of his nose. He was trying to put on a brave face for the crew, but it was getting harder and harder to do so.
