Floating along in the open sea was a rather inconspicuous barrel. It drifted toward a huge landmass that was actually several smaller ones all lumped together. Ailbert McBride and his son were out fishing and checking their crab traps when they spotted it. It was an easy thing to pull it in with a net and bring it aboard. Curious, the son wanted to open it immediately, but Ailbert called for him to help with the nets. Not long after, the two returned to their town, pulling into port and unloading their catch. After everything was sorted, the son went over to the barrel and noticed something that he hadn’t before. There were sounds coming from inside! Confused, he rapped the side of the barrel with his fist twice.
“WHOOOOOHOOOOOOO!”
The barrel burst open all of a sudden, a girl with silver hair flying out and up into the air. She smiled widely, grinning from ear to ear. Landing neatly on the ground, the girl scanned her surroundings with unfettered enthusiasm. The son, who had been knocked onto his tuckus, stood up and scratched his head in utter confusion. He hadn’t known what to expect from the barrel, but he certainly hadn’t considered a girl of all things! He opened his mouth to speak, but he heard a loud rumbling coming from her stomach. Her hands went to her stomach and all her energy drained from her body immediately. It was kind of funny to the son. So, smiling awkwardly, he spread his hands out.
“Uh… hi there. Are you hungry?”
Inside of the local tavern, Wolfric was chowing down on everything in front of her. Plates piled high, and the guy who had invited her here looked in with dismay. Wolfric wasn’t sure why though! Pausing in between plates, Wolfric turned to him and smiled that same wide smile. “Hey, thanks for the grub! I thought I was gonna die! I’m Wolfric. Wolfric Hertz! What’s yours?”
The boy rubbed the back of his head and smiled awkwardly again. “Uh… it’s Ailbert Junior. But you can just call me Junior. Everyone does. Um… if ya don’t mind my asking… what were you doing in a barrel?”
“Oh! That! Well, I was really hungry… I jumped in, ate a bunch, and I guess I musta fell asleep or something, ‘cause when I woke up, I was out at sea!”
Wolfric spread her arms wide as if to emphasize her point before continuing to stuff her face. Junior’s eyes widened as he considered her. “Wow, that must have been scary!”
“Naaah, not really. I kinda just slept and ate the whole way. Oh, hey! Where is this anyway?”
“You’re in the Pikt Archipelago. Me and my family have lived here for generations.” Junior answered, taking a sip of juice from his mug as he watched Wolfric finish devouring her meal. Wolfric pouted at hearing that. People stuck in one place for one reason or another didn’t really have much of a want to leave. She didn’t let that dampen her spirits for too long though, and turned to Junior.
“I’m looking for a ship and a crew! Have you heard of anyone cool or interesting around?”
“H-Huh? Well, uh… the Marines keep a pretty close watch over things around here, so I don’t think so? Oh, wait! There was that guy! Miss Blaire, do you know what happened to him?”
Wolfric followed Junior’s eyes to the bartender serving up all the yummy food and drinks from behind the bar. She tilted her head to the side, curious to hear anything about this mysterious guy. She wasn’t thrilled about the marines, but they were nothing that she couldn’t handle.
