-- CHAPTER 5 // JUNGLE FEVER
Almost like a mirror reflex, Phoebe smiled back at Pacha and echoed his laugh with her own. The two seemed to be pretty much on the same wavelength, Deman thought; in almost the same vein, Phoebe pictured in her mind she practically was Pacha's friend already. She was always one to make friends quick, or otherwise bug other people so much that they would eventually concede.
The fishwoman replied to Pacha's tongue by pushing down on an eyelid; she figured that could have been a funny face too. It wasn't clear why she had to respond with a funny face as well, but she did so without thinking.
Deman, on the other hand, carefully listened to the professor. A grin of pure satisfaction appeared on his face as soon as the man mentioned his intuition was, in fact, correct; there's probably no greater satisfaction than to take a shot in the dark, following a mere glint, and hit the mark. "I'm glad you could prove me correct, Professor, thanks. It looked like the most reasonable chain of deductions."
His expression turned upside down quickly afterwards, his mouth tightening into a slit.
"Nobles wanting to preserve their status? Doesn't sound new to me." Deman looked visibly annoyed by the mere thought. This annoyance was twofold: on the one hand, it was always the nobles who did something wrong and used their power to hide the truth; on the other, hiding the records actually prevented the archaeologists' from progressing. And on top of that, he wanted to know if his hunch was right once again - but he couldn't, without the records.
"Nobles can't run away from the truth. If someone does something wrong, all it takes is a mind's eye sharp enough to see and connect all the pieces." That sentence needed some context, for sure, so he thought up an example. "Imagine you find a human jaw bone from hundreds of years ago. The jaw only has one tooth, consumed enamel, and the rest had fallen out."
"If you wanted to hide the truth, you could say that's just an old weird bone. However..."
"If the jaw only has one tooth, the person it belonged to couldn't eat a lot of the typical food for humans. But you know that they had been eating something, because the enamel is consumed." He tapped on his forehead, all wrinkled from the frowning. "This means that someone had to help them eat. Once you get that, it's not difficult to imagine that could have been a common occurrence. Therefore, there could have been a group of people who practiced compassion towards one another, practicing morals. And once you get that, it's not difficult to imagine that there could have been an entire society built around those morals."
"That old weird bone implied the existence of much more than just one person!"
Deman had just finished talking when a bearded man in crusty clothes approached him. "Commander White Tiger" he said, "we have finished preparing the tents and the tools to recover the last few items from the wreck like you suggested. We still couldn't find your sword, however..." "It's fine, Temugin. Tell the others I'll look for it myself, tomorrow morning."
