Tsubaki #1
’This is not how I imagined to die’
Tsubaki lifted her head from her knees and took yet another look around – as if expecting the surroundings to have changed. The brunette took a deep slow inhale of air and paused for a bit. Her whole body froze for just a second and it would have appeared she was about to speak but the girl just exploded in to a loud sigh and dropped her head onto her pulled up knees again in despair. ’No, it’s no use.’ The petty officer wrapped her arms around her bent legs and her fingers gripped to the fabric of her marine uniform.
There she was, sitting in one of the cells of a sizable marine vessel with about twenty of her fellow seamen. Most of the crew besides a couple of engineers and the commanding officers were locked in cells on one of the lower decks and most of them had crouched down to a sitting position. It was painfully quiet. Many of the men and women were still in shock. Somehow, within a span of two hours the ship had been hijacked. It was an odd mix of shame and fear that could be felt in the air.
Approaching footsteps broke the silence and soon a tall figure came into view in the hall between the two rows of cells. The man was a bit over six feet tall and had a sturdy build. He was dressed in a marine uniform like everyone else but the guy was carrying a semi-automatic rifle. Such weapons are far too expensive to be distributed to lower ranks and there weren’t supposed to be any on the ship as far as anyone was aware of. The troops now locked up were from mixed divisions. All of them were to be deployed elsewhere after previous work or finished training.
The man passed everybody by and his tall figure cast a towering shadow over all the prisoners in the already dim lighting. It was still noon outside but the cell deck had never been the most lit one. The guard had a very stern look on his face and a cold gaze. The corners of her lips seemed to be forever pointing downwards and the bridge of his nose was quite high. He looked a bit rectangular because of a very square jaw and a cube-like haircut. His footsteps were slow and heavy and at times one would get a bit annoyed at the pace. Tsubaki caught herself at the thought, as she lifted her eyes to watch the passing man, but soon dismissed it because another thought took over – the one that told her this was all the entertainment she’d probably get and it was no use rushing anything.
Soon the footsteps faded and the man disappeared up a flight of stairs. A moment after that the hazel eyed brunette straightened up. She was feeling despair and boredom at the same time. The mere idea of that both scared and amused her in some way but she was curious if anyone else might feel something similar and so she scanned her surroundings more carefully this time. Of course, she couldn’t see everyone due to being almost shoulder to shoulder with many others but she was closest to the bars at the isle. There had to be some of them that didn’t want to die as hostages on a hijacked government ship. Perhaps, there was something the mass of them could come up with. The young woman didn’t want to believe that everyone present was truly a sheep that didn’t know better than to follow orders. Or, if they were, she’d enjoy a chat before her inexorable death.
’Um…’ she cleared her throat and lifted up to her knees so she could see better but still didn’t want to make the effort of getting up. Her uniform shirt was clearly too big for her so she had the sleeves rolled up to her shoulders. ’Excuse me! Is anyone working on a plan on how not to die by any chance?’ The young woman spoke in a half whisper but very clearly. If her childhood theater coaches were right then she should have been heard by the others.
