Personality
Ilbe is an unrestrained adventurer, driven by a seemingly innate longing for the freedom of the sky. His dream is to invent the first aircraft capable of circumnavigating the globe. Ilbe is constantly looking for ways to improve his aircrafts. He's equally interested in different ways of traveling across the globe, like the Sea Train, submersible vehicles and anything that's more interesting than a regular boat.
Ilbe believes strongly that the age of ships has passed. Their history of control and conflict has driven many islands, including his own, and therefore they must be left behind in the history books. He thinks that Revolutionaries have the right idea, that the current world order is stifling, unfair and in need of a major overhaul. He aspires to find real Revolutionaries and possibly even support their campaigns with his inventions.
Though not particularly scientific or mindful, he is creative and handy. Ilbe has a knack for understanding and deconstructing the designs of others in order to better understand them. He dislikes studying, reading and theoretical work, preferring much more to attempt to do something great rather than to talk about it. This has created a lack of shame when it comes to his work, he's always proud to have at least tried, no matter the outcome.
Ilbe is not a pacifist, but dislikes grand scale war, especially for economic interests. He is a terrible artist, and his sketches for designs and plans always come out terribly. He largely prefers colder weather, and loves to watch powerful storms have their way with landscapes susceptible to their destruction.
Appearance
{Spoiler}
Though not very interested in fashion or appearance, Ilbe does maintain a specific wardrobe. He ensures the clothes he wears are always a kind of garb that he doesn't mind getting dirty. Usually he just wears his black jumpsuit, which covers his ankles up to a sleeveless top, some boots and a shirt. When colder he pull on an embarrassingly bright knit sweater from his grandma, one of many she's given to him. These are the only clothes he's careful to keep clean.
He also wears a large, baggy belt running diagonally across his chest. Besides from basic tools, he keeps a roster of other bulky equipment on his person at most times. His clothes are often spotted with grease or torn open from hectic movement. He often wears fingerless gloves that don't limit any fine dexterous movement while protecting his palms. Generally, he's not well put together and can appear unkempt or a little greasy.

Background Ilbe Straits is the son of a famous linguist, Bithia Straits, who's aspired to compile every language into a single lexicon with which anybody can communicate with anybody else. Her aspirations began as very peaceful and hopeful, but it quickly became apparent that her dreams were a dangerous thing. Not only would Bithia need to venture to perilous places to take record of every language, but this also meant deciphering the long-lost language of the Poneglyphs. Before the World Government took note of the seriousness of her pursuit, Bithia left Ilbe on Baterilla island with his grandma at the age of six.
Ilbe never resented his mother's decision, and decided he must have a similarly lofty goal if he wanted to be able to face his mother once more. The last he heard of his mother was that she'd entered the Grand Line with the company of some pirate crew. Ilbe tried to study and follow in his mother's footsteps, but the quiet perusing of books was not where his heart could settle. Instead, he was attracted to the open and spacious skies, to the fantasy of harmlessly hopping from one island to another. He dreamed of a road above the storms and chaos of it all.
This goal in mind, Ilbe immediately went to work, and became a terror on the island. Notorious for his many crash landings and failed experiments. Ilbe is constantly doing odd jobs for more materials and experience in order to better improve his aircraft. Once he's confident his ship can take him to another island in the South Blue, he wishes to begin his journey. With the nineteenth iteration of the Monarch, Ilbe believes that he's finally found just that.
