Teal Island
Formerly the Grand Steel Flotilla, Teal Island is an island city in ruins. Three major encampments sit in the dust of the destruction catering to their own demographics.
Civilization Name: None
Location: Snake Route, Grand Line
Size: A circular-ish island averaging about 4.5 miles in radius.
Log Pose Time: 1.5 Weeks
Climatic Type: Summer
Climate: The island generally has very warm quite tropical weather. It cycles often between heavy rains and beating hot days. Recently it's also become a little more breezy, with sea breezes drafting across it to cool the area for short times.
The only truly unfortunate thing is that the island sits in an area of the Grand Line that is quite notable for brewing tropical storms. At least once or twice a month the island is buffeted by one sometimes becoming a full-fledged hurricane but other times winding across the island as a 'simple' tropical storm.
Affiliation: The island is ostensibly affiliated with the World Government. After recent events this affiliation has been in flux. Multiple factions including the marines and revolutionaries have men stationed on the island.
Island Appearance: The island from a distance somewhat resembles its former glory. Depending on approach, one of the surviving segments of wall might be seen rising above the island. Or perhaps the broken top of what used to be marine HQ is visible. But all this hides true dangers, due to all the destruction, the waters around the island are filled with sunken ships, fragments of wall, and broken pieces of docks and the light. These all form an underwater 'minefield' of sorts as pieces stick up and out threatening to tear a hole in the hull of any approaching ship.
Landmarks
- Marine 5th Bastion: Constructed and fortified in the aftermath of the Fall of the Grand Steel Flotilla. The 5th Bastion was once part of the 5th Barracks. Now the 5th Bastion occupies a set of buildings near a surviving segment of wall on the east side of the island. The two most important buildings that make up the 5th Bastion are as follows:
- Bastion HQ a building literally built against the wall itself. It rises up against the wall commanding an overview of the ruins around it.
- Docks of the 5th These docks just to the west of the 5th Bastion proper were once a small shipping port for the Grand Steel Flotilla. It is now the safest marine-controlled port on the island.
- The Fallen Star: A large pentagonal building in the center of the island. This used to be Marine HQ for the Grand Steel Flotilla, but no longer. Most of the building is in ruins, large portions are ramshackle and falling apart. Near the center of the building whole sections of it have been flattened to the ground. One can often find looters and smugglers prowling its halls but it is mostly unoccupied.
- Teal Town: Perhaps the largest and most inhabited section of the island is Teal Town. From the dust of the fallen marine fortress the inhabitants who survived and remained formed Teal Town near what was once Port Steel. It is a bustling town of a few hundred that occupy many of what were once marine buildings. Unfortunately its not much too look at, much of the buildings that make up Teal Town are in a little better shape than they were after the incident.
- Port Teal Perhaps a homage to its former name, Port Teal is the largest available harbor on Teal Island. While it is so large, there are only a few actually usable wharves there as many of the others have sunken ships in them that would threaten the hulls of all but the smallest of ships.
- Teal Town Hall The town hall is probably the sturdiest building in Teal Town. If you pay close enough attention one might notice that it was once the main prison of the Grand Steel Flotilla but its been commandeered and turned into a town hall.
- Shipwreck Alley: Notably the waters around the island are filled with sunken ships and giant slabs of debris. Only small lanes have been cleared, the largest of these lanes which leads into Port Teal while being clear the large amount of debris about it cause strange currents to pass through it making it as dangerous an entrance as any into to the island port.
- Shanty-Side: On the far western edge of the island not far from Teal Town is Shanty-Side. It is the darker dirtier version of Teal Town. Lived by some of the disreputable bunch who stayed after the marines were defeated. It is a more brigand-filled pirate-y type of town. While normal life occurs here, some of the more backwater dealings also occur here.
- Shanty Over Sides: The largest inn in Shanty-Side. Fashioned out of what used to be a marine barracks building. It is a bit ramshackle and very rowdy. The life of the Shanty-Side basically runs out of this inn for the most part. It is the place to make deals, buy food, sleep, and so forth. It sits on the edge of Shanty-Side Market.
- Shanty-Side Harbor: To call this a harbor might be a stretch. A few creaky wooden jetty's stick out into a small cove that has been cleaned out of the wreckage. The lane into it from outside is barely feasible for a medium-sized ship to traverse without damaging it's hull.
Inhabitants
- Teal Folk: The Teal Folk are a hardy bunch in their own right. For the most part Teal Town's residents are survivors of the incident. They are industrious and have been doing well to try and refurbish their town into something worth living in. As the main port on the island they get a decent amount of throughput of ships and goods. These folk are realistic and can even be grim at times. But in the end they are optimists, it would require as much to try and rebuild the island.
- Shanty-Side Folk: If Teal Folk are hardy, Shanty-Side folk are rough inside and out. A large part of Shanty-Side are folks who have arrived from other islands in rougher conditions than even Teal Island looking for a new life. Shanty-Side has a lot of partying, back-door deals, and the like. Its a combination of people looking for a new life and people trying to take advantage of those people.
- The Wanderers: While the folk at the three 'settlements' on the island make up most of the population of the island there is another group. The Wanderers are a mix of all kinds that live in the ruins of the rest of the island. They are not really behooven to any faction and instead are sparsely spread out about the island often moving from place to place. They can often be found raiding supply lines between the towns, delving into the ruins to find tech, weapons, or the like to be sold, or simply living in their own 'hermetic' environment.
Organizations & Groups
- Marine 5th Bastion: The Marine 5th Bastion controls a cordoned off area of the eastern side of the island. The Marines of the 5th Bastion are mostly new marines to the island. They're a careful group as led by their mysterious Captain. They maintain a somewhat close relationship with Teal Town as it is how a decent amount of their supplies comes in. The 5th Bastion are aware of other forces on the island but lack the manpower to do much about it apart from the occasional raid.
- Teal Council: The governing body of Teal Town. The Teal Council is a weird group of mostly survivors. It is worth noting the Marines have a nominal seat on the council though a marine rarely actually appears to the council meetings. The group tends to be rather focused on building up wealth in Teal Town and rebuilding their corner of the island.
- Shanty-Side Market: The Shanty-Side Market is a two-sided market. There is the public side that shows its frontal face. There they sell many of the same products you might find in Teal Town though of sometimes questionable quality and at weird marks in terms of price. On the other side is the true face of the market. It acts as a small black market outpost where some things that may have been questionably obtained can be offered up to those with the purse to try.
- Teal Network: A combination of ruined houses mainly in Teal Town but also in Shanty-Side and a few ruined buildings just generally around the island. The Teal Network are a bunch of Revolutionary Outposts. The main base for the Teal Network isn't even on the island. And is instead a large coated ship sitting on the sea floor in Shipwreck Alley among the wreckages. It is near the thin lane that connects Shanty-Side Harbor to the Grand Line.
History
- Long ago, but some time after the Void Century the marines took over a yet unnamed island and unsettled island along a route of the Grand Line. It's choice was partially for the purpose of creating a central refueling and repair along the route. But due to large pressure from pirates coming along the line caused the continuous fortification of the island.
- After the initial fortifications had been built up the use of the island became clear. Thus more and more material was moved to the island to build the island up even more. In this time the island became a true bastion upon the Grand Line. It's port was expanded into a full drydock, the prison was created, the walls were built with their large naval gun emplacements. But perhaps the largest growth of the base was in its growth into a hub for civilians as well. While large sections had been requisitioned for marine use sections of the town within the walls began to come together forming commercial and residential areas spotted about the island.
- With the then called Grand Steel Flotilla becoming a dominant force in its part of the Grand Line, the next step for the island was the ability to project its power to nearby islands allowing them to create a zone of peace that notably cleaned up much of the piracy from the islands in the vicinity of the Flotilla. To do this the Port was expanded again, the forces of the marines in the area were expanded and specialized forces such as the then famous 125th Shock Troopers were formed.
- However with such supremacy comes its own issues. Over time the island's forces grew lazy and presumptive. Their faith in the supremity of the island's fortifications and forces which seemed well placed started to cause them to skip steps in the islands defenses. Parts of the island fell into different states of disrepair. All this being said due to the magnitude of power differential in manpower still none were able to challenge the bastion on the sea.
- All of this changed after what is now simply called the Incident. The newspapers that managed to report on it with what information they could obtain called it the Fall of the Flotilla. The story as it is told is a pirate fleet formed of at least a hundred different crews (it was actually more like fifty) under the lead of the devious 'SUPERCELL' Captain Mateo Coppers through use of trickery and deceit managed to make giant holes in the defenses of the island. The most notable point of this is the now easily visibly giant parts of missing wall in what was once an almost perfectly surrounding outer wall. With that exploited along with the help of more pirate captains that would go down in history they executed a spectacular multi-pronged attacked on the bastion. With defenses in disrepair and marines somehow caught unaware piece by piece fell into place. And soon the pirates had brought the island to its knees. Rampant and unchecked by the marines due to their faith in the island's defenses the pirates are blamed for much of the ruined state of Teal Island. Which to be fair is mostly true.
- When the pirates (for the most part) left the island nearly fell silent. For many of those left they had little they could do. Due to the destruction there were only a few open sea lanes connecting their ports to the world at large. Without large supply lines many of the surviving residents were forced to make a choice to leave the island or stay and try their best to rebuild. While many left some stayed. To maintain supplies, groups began to form at the harbors that were not blocked in by debris and wreckages locking out aid. The largest of these groups formed in the vestiges of Port Steele calling themselves Steel Town which eventually morphed into Teal Town.
- Later along another of the groups greeting an influx of new people formed Shanty-Side. With its lack of clearer organization the growing town ended up being a haven for those of a more ill-meaning background. The final group to return was interestingly the Marines. A small task force was sent in to scope out the island. That group ended up setting up what is now Bastion 5. While they have intentions on much of the island, too much of it is in ruins and not enough focus is being placed towards it for the necessary effort to reinstall the Grand Steel Flotilla to be doable.
