Oof! Ow! Extremities screamed for relief as the worm’s weight dragged her through snow and dirt, stretching her roots to their limit and then some. Acidic oozes threatened her further, as too did the prospect of being ground to a pulp against cavernous walls, forcing Whitaker Bryony to release her penetrative grasp of this formidable foe’s body just to dodge the proverbial bullet. That left her beneath the surface, but not alone. Kite had somehow found a way down and had made his pursuit of the beast, but this world was far unlike that which lay above — this world was the enemy’s world and it knew it. Bloodied and beaten, it was making the most of its network of tunnels.
Being close to it is dangerous, and so’s being at a distance…?! Reacting as swiftly as her shrunken form would allow her, the leafy lady rolled out of the way as a volley of corrosive cannonballs flew towards Kite and herself, dissolving snow and soil with ease. Some of the spatter scorched fabric, chewing holes in winter clothing, but not deep enough as to scald flesh. The worm turned, rushing towards them with teeth bared.“Kite,” she called:
“I’ve got a plan, y’know?”
Plans weren’t her strongest suit — she knew that. But, she also had to give it a shot. Stabbing and slashing and sound alone had so far done mostly superficial damage, but the plan that came to mind was less about their direct attacks, and more about the environment. Caustic devastation had melted pathways through which the beast had cruised, but in its wake it seemed to leave supportive secretions. Roots lashed and laced their way through the earth around herself and Kite, forming a network through their section of tunnel — floor and wall and ceiling alike.
“That sound you made… Aim it at the ceiling above it!” She gritted her teeth in determination as she began to inhale, infusing her breath with unnatural energies. At the beast she stared. Straight down its gullet. She opened her mouth, a loud screech emanating from her maw agape. Waves of fiery light shot forth, caressing the creature’s form as it charged, and within seconds it screamed in retaliation. Wriggling and convulsing as the hallucinogenic force saturated body and mind, thrashing motions slowed it down, hopefully buying the duo enough time. Hopefully her roots would be able to hold…
