There was one flash of memory that burned into the depths of her mind. She never wanted to forget it – the night where she lost all hope. She saw a monster, one who saved her from captivity. The demonic creature slashed with his black claws, slicing through their chains of enslavement; it moved like a ghost, leaving a trail of unconscious bodies in its wake. It very much felt like a dream, a spark of hope at the end of a nightmare. But, there was no denying one fact: she was free.
After a lifetime of war and chaos, she was not accustomed to this surreal sensation of peace and calmness, yet as her amber eyes wandered from one person to another, she did not sense the slightest bit of satisfaction from any of them.
Crouching on a rooftop was a short adolescent girl with long brown hair, a heart-shaped face, small nose and mouth, and amber-hued pupils. The palm of her hands pressed downwards; she was like a cat perched onto a high spot, watching the world animate itself across time. No war, no violence, no gunshots, no fire, no corpses, everything seemed peaceful yet unexpectedly gloomy on this cloudy day.
A pebble was tossed her way; it missed and skipped across the roof. Her eyes redirected themselves down below where a man was gazing back up at her.
“Get down from my roof, you damned girl!” The elderly man balled and shook his fist.
Miu realized just then that she was freezing, wearing just a violet tank-top and indigo pants. The temperature at her home island would never get this cold. “Is this your house, old man?”
“Who are you calling old man!? I’m middle-aged! And you’re goddamn right it is.”
“May I come inside? It’s cold.”
“No, you may not!” He growled grumpily as he proceeds to open the front door to his two-story house, steps in, and slams the door shut.
Cupping her hands around her mouth, Miu raised her voice down below, “Okay, I’ll just sit on your roof then!”
The front door immediately slammed open as the old man’s head pops out – eyes popping out, “Get off my roof, damn it!”
