Grove 26 - 81st Marine Outpost
He had to confess. Stalling any longer would only plant the seeds for disaster in the long run. His one true objective had been achieved – rescuing his little sister who had been kidnapped and gone missing for three months. The two of them were reunited, but complications showed up soon after.
As a mere First-Class Seaman Recruit who was assigned at Athens Island, there wasn’t much he could do to fabricate an excuse as to how he ended up on Inlet Grove Stop. It was a long story.
“EH!? HOW DID YOU GET ALL THE WAY OVER THERE?” A loud feminine tone of surprise boomed into his ears.
Pluto squeezed his eyes shut as he held the receiver in his hand while contacting his superior over the Den Den Mushi. “I... went to save my sister...,” he said reluctantly.
“Huh? You have a sister?”
“... Yes...,” he whispered as the girl in question was clinging onto him in order to hear the conversation up close. The little five-foot tall girl was named Rebecca, and she was still flabbergasted that her older brother had became a marine soldier of all things. That certainly wasn’t the case three months ago. In fact, from her perspecitve, this was completely uncharacteristic of him for he had never shown any passionate beliefs of justice before. This wouldn't be the type of job he would accept if money was the reason. The most laughable part about this would be his puny rank. She had seen him fight plenty of times; she knew how strong he truly is. While she doesn't know how rankings are determined, she did know that Pluto was likely hiding his true strength from the navy. It wouldn't be too hard for him to showcase his abilities; there was definitely something else going on here. She had her suspicions. There must be still things that her brother had kept secret from her again.
“You do you realize that this means that you disobeyed orders and acted on your own accord, don’t you?”
“I don’t regret my actions. I’ll do it again if I have to. If it's an apology that you want, then I can only offer an insincere one.”
“Heh..., you really are unsuited to be a soldier.”
The boy sighed, “So... what’s my punishment? Will I get kicked out?”
“Yes..., you will get kicked out... from your current rank that is.”
“I don’t think my rank can get much lower. And even if it does, that hardly changes anything.”
“He-he-he..., actually, you’re promoted to Ensign, Pluto.”
“... What?”
“Isn't it great? This was decided before I was aware of your incident, but I’m willing to turn a blind eye this time. However, next time that something like this happen, ask me for assistance. I would have gone with you.”
“Why and how did I get promoted? I haven’t... done anything yet...,” he sounded perplexed.
“Like I said, you’re unsuited to be a soldier, but as an officer, you’ll have a bit more leeway on what you can do. Your promotion was based on discovering all the bounties you have captured before joining the marines. And besides..., I have a feeling that you're a lot stronger than you appear.”
Tch... So she managed to scrape up some of my past... This woman is definitely trouble. For now, I’ll just have to roll with it.
