The half-giants words continued to trouble Yan as he turned from the marine base. They rang in his head, I've already chosen? But when? How would he know anyway? His questions were constant but the half-giant was not coming back. He had went with the marines into prison with Moto Chitsu. As he started his walk back he recounted Oimo's words one more time. Lost in thought he traveled slowly barely paying enough attention to stay out of the way of others heading down the road in the other or same direction as his. The cool breeze even didn't bother him in his contemplative stance.
'Don't look for reason's not to do it'? Do what? Don't look for reasons to quit? Is he saying I should stay? Is that the choice I've apparently made? The spearman troubled himself over such wording as he thought abotu it more. Concluding to combine it with the statement about searching his own actions he logically placed the two together. It seems to be advice to not ask others. This was his choice to make, being the statement of it. He laughed, Useless! Completely useless! Exactly what he didn't want to hear from someone he asked for help.
The next bit of what Oimo had said was even less helpful. Completely self serving he had talked about his own situation. He apparently 'wasn't running away', not that he could in any case so what did that matter? Yan brought a single hand to his head rubbing his temples.
"GAHHHHH"
The spearman cried out completely starved of ideas, none of this was helpful. None of this answered his questions. About him whispering abounded as civilians circled around him stopping momentarily to whisper and make statement of no real consequence or value. Yan looked about suddenly aware of the situation about him. Twisting his spear down he waved it about in an effort to deter the onlookers. Don't look ... don't look ... this is none of your %^&$%&^ business!!! The words poured out of his head though he said nothing. About him the civilians shrunk nervously away from him.
Quit or commit ... the words echoed through Yan's head as he watched those civilians walk away suddenly. They had no wish to find themselves as the end point of his spear. It was that, the lightbulb blinked in his head. Quit or Commit! That's it! Oimo committed to it, the path he was going down. But what about me? The words rocked his mind as he looked back on all of his choices. To talk with Bianca, to meet Moto again, to fight Omoi, every choice he had made. He had had a choice hadn't he? He'd made the choices a hundred times through smaller choices. Why had he chosen them? He was interested in what would happen, there were other reasons of course, but that was also one wasn't it. The adventure, it was a swell change from his otherwise dull life.
I've not quit. So that's it, the choice. Yan smiled to himself. His mind made up, The life might be hard, it might have its troubles ... it might have its pitfalls ... but its different, its interesting. Far more interesting than the boring bodyguard life. He laughed, this time less pitifully and more hopefully and happily. Slamming the butt of his spear against the ground he laughed again. Gripping his abdomen as pain sprung up he continued to smile. "Right then, I guess I've a decision to tell Bianca."
