The familiar chugging noises of Puffing Tom stifled by the comfort of first class carriages, the gentle blend of light and deep blues of sky and sea in the window passed by gently as the Sea Train continued its venture towards Water Seven. Sitting upon the luxurious seats of her private compartment, Miss Vandella's hazel hues gazed into the dark and sleepy eyes of the Den Den Mushi as it rang, receiver in hand.
Puru-Puru-Puru-Puru
"Levante." A deep voice emanating from the mouth of the transponder snail, the monotonous tones sent a cold shiver down the spine of the mercenary. As tough as she was, as tenacious as she was, there was no denying that the man at the other end of the line was one of the few people she feared. The chill made her body shudder, her own knowledge of the voice on the other end betraying her usually stoic form.
"Rep-porting, Sir." Stuttering slightly, the baby brunette confirmed her presence as she spoke into the receiver. For what seemed like an eternity, she sat there staring nervously into the eyes of the snail, silence persisting.
"As the Sea Train has not yet arrived in Water Seven, so sources tell me, I assume that means you ran into some trouble on the way?" His voice probing her mind, for another few seconds of eternity the 'Rising Devil' now seemed to be shrinking down. Her thoughts gathering, she prepared to string together the events of the morning, somewhat fearful of the response she may receive when the mysterious voice learned of her failures.
"Revolutionaries, Sir. They blocked the tracks using a Sea Cow, then boarded. We... I was able to take care of them, including their commanding officer, Korika Tamaru, but the artefact has been lost. It seems Korika dropped it into the sea." The chill that ran through her body turned into a cold sweat, quietly wiping her brow as she waited for the response. The pauses between the exchange of words continued to drag on, each seemed far longer than the last as she sat there. The world around her seemed silent, almost invisible, the corners of her vision blurred into darkness which even blinking failed to clear.
"I see. We...?" Swallowing quietly, if not clear to her already, the fact that this 'Sir' never missed a detail was more clear than ever. Even the smallest of slip-ups seemed to contain important information that this man would never miss. After all, he was the one who had forced their hand in the first place.
"Yes, Sir. There were passengers who helped defeat the Revolutionaries, though I did not see the others. There was one, a woman, who fought against their commander." Her voice a little calmer now, Miss Vandella was making sure to take a deep breath between each sentence, easing her nerves. One slip up could end disastrously for her, and her fellow mercenaries.
"Levante. Please keep an eye on this woman. She may have stolen the artefact without you knowing. Probably not, but it is worth your attentions. We can't allow it to fall into the wrong hands." His voice seemed to be more cautious than before, hastened yet less intimidating, though perhaps the sounds of another Den Den Mushi ringing in the background were helping in that respect.
"Yes, Sir..."
