Am I the only one outraged by this?

So this guy is messing around on the internet, right? He's one of those people who has a dark and sarcastic sense of humor. This article explains what happened:

I don't know what's worse, the not taking a hint to knock off the sarcasm? The fact he's in jail still after not one shred of evidence was found that he actually had the means to carry out such threads. Or the fact that his all caps rant was obviously fake and over the top.

Either way, even in jest he shouldn't threaten to shoot up schools. Especially not when people run out and do so. Frankly, this whole mess is his own fault for not using his own brain.

Yeah, this is a gross overreaction. Posting comments about child murder is certainly bad, no doubt there...it's just ten years in jail is much, much worse. This kid deserved a punch in the face, but something like this abuses the entire justice system.

I'm curious who reported this to the police. People are a little too sensitive, words are ultimately harmless.

I do not agree on words being harmless. Words are powerful tools that can build and cut, injure and heal far better than any weapon or doctor.

This kid was an ass, but that was a gross over-reaction I do agree. I'd have probably given him a week as a warning not to be like that.

He should not have been taken into custody and given a sentence. That is obviously only a portion of a complete conversation; yes it was pretty bad to be saying that, but without the full context, a decision should not have been made. In fact there wasn't enough evidence without the missing text, so every person who had a hand to play in his arrest, broke the law and could be sued once he is released.

This was an absolute abuse of the law. Just shows, that under the wrong circumstances somebody can use something small and ruin another person's life.

Yes, the threats seemed to be almost psychotic. No they pretty much were. But I don't believe stuffing a kid into a cell is going to fix anything. In fact, it could actually drive them to become a lunatic. It's a scary thought really. I mean sure he had assy messages and all but, jail is like hardcore man.
