(OOC: I think Captain Calhoun is a far better name anyway)
As always Captain Matrim’s tongue was quicker than most men, but even hearing the man’s arguments he held his gaze when the man rounded on him explaining why his situation wasn’t as solid as it seems. His hair strewn in various unkempt directions, dried blood clinging hopelessly to his skin, and the wounds he’d received from that time still burning in his side left him with little strength to retort immediately. When the moment of tension finally abated the haggard officer managed only to keep his feet until an apparently satisfied Matrim disappeared, leaving the two men not too far from the ruined bar. Left in silence he could feel Dice’s nervous glances in his direction, but he his eyes flickered with lifelessness as he sat cross legged in the dirt drawing a few awkward glances from the vagabonds passing by.
“Suppose he’s right…”
That thought was so surprising the usually impenetrable slab of muscles and callousness for a moment fragmented in stark shock; the fact that he was admitting to Matrim, of all people being right burned him to his core, but there was another part of the lengthy monologue that struck him. He’d always been the level headed one even as a child and as he watched his sister dragged away in the tattooed arms of well muscled freak while he whimpered meekly on the ground there was a moment when he felt as though his world was breaking…as if he’d just shatter into a million pieces.
While the moments after the pirates had mugged him and carried off his sister faded into incoherence Li remembered the wetness that had remained on his face for the remainder of that day. No matter how many times he scrubbed the filthy sleeve of his torn shirt against his face tears would stain his cheeks as he walked silently amidst a crowd of nameless faces that stared back at him with transparent remorse. Not long after he joined the Marine, but to what end?
That was the question that the speech drew from Li; part of him wondered if he could answer it.
“Put these on, and maintain some semblance of control. If you want to find whoever this Blackeye person is, don't be rash and draw attention to yourself. Use stealth, use cunning, and use your bloody brain for something other than motor skills” Mat’s voice penetrated through his trancelike state just as a swath of clothes fell neatly into his lap; it seemed the officer hadn’t been lying about his luck.
He hadn’t even been aware of Matrim’s return, just how long had he been sitting on the ground?
Casting an observant glance towards Dice, he watched briefly as the Recruit laughably addressed the various ornery men and even drew a few smiles from more…flamboyant gents.
Looking back down at the clothes he’d been given Li took his time deliberately rising to his feet, grunting with the effort of raising his still aching body to a stand; next time he’d remember to bring pain reliever when on a mission with only half healed injuries. A green short sleeve shirt dangled in his hand for a moment before he calmly tossed it to the side and his eyes followed its trajectory until it landed with barely a thud. Small rings of dust wafted into the air before losing its shape and become a cloud of dirt,
“Captain…again…you seem to misunderstand a lot”
His voice was calmer than he’d thought it would be. Upon seeing Matrim he simply fate wrathful anger, but now his serenity had returned and the handsome face that was splotched with all manner of dirt as well as his own blood peered at the haughty faced man whose own messy hair made him look more like the villain rather than the hero, “…this mission wasn’t about catching Blackeye…at least not only about catching Blackeye” he said softly
“I hate it myself, but we were given the mission to establish the Marine’s dominance in Serine by catching Blackeye. The gallivanting that we are doing here is all part of our mission, sir” he explained, “…a mission that I’ve been put in charge of…” at this point in his statement his eyes batted while a small imprint of his jaw line jutted from its place beneath the surface.
“Dice…I understand that this man is a Captain and you can follow him. There would be no shame in that, however I cannot. Not now. In asserting ourselves as Marine as foolhardy as it seems this city is reminded of the authority that is not far from them, making them hesitate even if it’s for a moment”
Li turned from the two and began walking down the street that they had been standing in. He had no concept of where he was going or where to look for Blackeye even or even if he could beat him alone, but still he forced himself to stride without a limp, each step sending a shooting pain up through his spine. In spite of his woes, his expression was black, yet almost smiling at the same time and he stopped after he’d gathered some distance. Craning his neck without turning he spoke firmly now with emphatic sparkle in his eyes while the proceedings of what appeared to be an amused grin touched his lips,
“You said my face was contemptuous in the bar…yet another misunderstanding it seems” he said though no longer looking at Matrim and Dice, “…the truth is…I was angry not because you abandoned them…but because you’re a coward…and everything you said…hiding in a bar…then arrogantly spouting self-righteous crap…sir…”
He’d begun walking again and noted that the sun was fading in a dull red fiery haze below the horizon; they’d best get a move on before someone runs into trouble, “My point is that you’re weaker than me and I’ve outgrown…that is I hold contempt for you…”
His final words drifted from his tongue without a hint of enmity, instead his words were frank and merely a portrayal of how felt, but by now he’d forgotten about his quarrel with Mat; enough had been said on the matter already and any further words would seem childish. Now Blackeye loomed somewhere in the shadows of the city.
That’s when the Baby Den Den Mushi rang…
(OOC: Chill, this is where the Halcon and Rann phone call comes in and they are getting beaten down by Blackeye…I don’t know if you wanted to rp out the conversation or if I should do it. If you want me to do it, just make the usual Dice post then I’ll carry us over to the spot where Halcon, Ran, Zane, and Blackeye are at)
