Name of Island: Port West
Size of Island: Medium.
Location of Island: Second route of the Grand Line.
Inhabitants: 2,000 marines and 5,000 civilians. The civilians are farmers, real salt-of-the-earth types. Clothing and speech are simple and unpretentious, and hospitality is highly valued, to the point where families that can barely feed themselves fight with each other over who gets to host a visitor. The citizens of Port West aren't easily frightened or intimidated by pirates or other troublemakers.
Town(s)/Village(s)/City or Cities:
The base: The marine base on this island, headed by Commander Donovan and holding 2,000 marines. This is a medium-strength base, able to contend with most pirate crews but a little out of their depth with the big players such as the Straw Hats and other Supernova caliber groups. Even so, they can put up a good fight. The layout is similar to all other marine bases, quite resembling the base in East Blue's Shell Town in particular, including the fenced execution yard behind the main building. The base is set on the southern coast of the island, separated from the city by a high wall.
The city: The people of Port West make their livings serving the marine base, providing them with tailors, food, weapons, and other provisions. On the whole, the citizens of Port West are very average and not unlike any citizens you would find in one of the Blues. The port is on the west side of the island (hence the name Port West) and most of the town itself is in the west and north. The eastern and central parts of the island are wilderness.
Port West's busiest district is the neighborhood adjacent to the marine base; this is where most marines spend their times on their days off and where the best shopping is to be had. But since this isn't a wealthy island, even the best shopping in Port West tends to be sort of dull; small trinkets playing on the marine base (like marine bobbleheads and shot glasses), local candy, and the farmer's market are the biggest draws. The largest building in Port West is the mayor's home, which also contains the town's modest library.
Flora and Fauna: Most of the animals on this island have been domesticated by the townspeople, to include pigs, cows, dogs, goats, sheep, and cats. Wild animals still live on the peripherals of the town, mostly deer and rabbits. Cultivated plant life includes crops such as corn, potatoes, beans, cotton and wheat. Wild plants are mostly harmless; poison ivy can be found throughout much of the forest, but it's easy to avoid.
Island History: Before the marine base was constructed, Port West was a prosperous subsistence farming community. They had few resources to build ships, so they relied on one trade ship to carry their meager imports and exports. Imagine their consternation when that one ship was taken by pirates as it returned to Port West, leaving the citizens short of a season's worth of income. They nearly starved that winter, and set about fixing their predicament that spring.
The mayor, a prominent merchant who had owned the town ship, wrote to marine headquarters requesting assistance in apprehending the pirates. The marines did them one better by building a base on the island. Port West prospered under the new protection. Many townspeople abandoned their rural lifestyles and became purveyors of tourist trinkets instead.
