Name of Island: Goya Island
Size of Island: Medium-Small, A roughly circle shaped island with an S-shaped river that bisects it, giving the landmass a vague yin-yang-esque silhouette when viewed from high above. The river is wide enough to support most merchant vessels and mid-sized marine varieties.
Location: Grand Line, Peace Route
Inhabitants: The inhabitants of Goya Island generally fall into one of two categories. The main settlement on the landmass is a large Marine R&D Field Base located far inland, almost at the center of the island itself. A smaller settlement exists at the southern mouth of the river, founded by some opportunistic merchants that previously catered to the Marines assigned here. Although populated mainly by humans, it isn't uncommon to find species of all kinds either passing through or living here since it is Grand Line.
Town(s)/Village(s)/City or Cities:
Marine Research and Development Base, "Hell's Garden": An expansive, well-equipped, and well-defended Marine center whose primary objective is to study a certain type of fruit that appears to grow only on Goya Island. As a result, a large portion of Hell's Garden's facilities take the appearance of a grand greenhouse where scientists can control the environment of their experiments to the smallest degree. The base also houses an impressive number of marine soldiers as a Defense force against any incoming pirates or hooligans and has all associated departments to support them: Barracks, Armory, Cantina, etc.
Sanguine Town: The bustling merchant town that has, for the most part, taken over the port at the southern mouth of the river on the Island. The original founders made their living by selling the sort of everyday luxury items that a Marine wouldn't be able to find in their base, but it has since expanded to provide places for them to relax and not be reminded of work as well (Read: Bars). As a result of the almost constant Marine presence, the townsfolk here don't fear pirates for the most part and, in fact, would be willing to extend their supplies and nightlife to any rogue seafarer that comes along if the price is right. Oh, and if they can avoid getting arrested.
Though beginning as little more than shops built from converted merchant ships, Sanguine Town now sports a very Tudorbethan Architectural Style.
Flora and Fauna: Goya Island, though not conforming to any seasonal island ideally, could probably be best considered as an Autumn or Spring Island, with hot summers and cold winters. A large portion of the island is still uninhabited deciduous forest that the Marines work hard to keep that way as not to disturb their research. As a result of the environmental conditions then, Goya Island sees the usual sort of animals related with its habitat: deer, elk, many varieties of birds and insects, squirrels, rabbits, rodents of all kinds, etc. The arrival of the merchant class meant the arrival of domestic pets as well, along with a small selection of animals raised solely for their meat: cows, chickens, sheep, etc.
The one standout from all these average conditions however, is a certain tree that is not seen growing anywhere else in the world. Dubbed "Hell Trees" by the Marines, they are named after the fruit that grows from their branches, aptly enough dubbed "Hell Fruit" by the same people and the namesake of the landmass' Research Base. The fruit, which comes in all colors, shapes, and sizes, are related only by the fact that they're decorated with incredibly complex swirls on their skin and taste unimaginably horrible. In fact, their appearance almost mirrors that of the more famous "Devil Fruit", although it reproduces none of the latter's superhuman effects. Just the look, and the foul effect on the tongue.
Island History: Decades ago, when even Gol D. Roger was first making his name as the King of Pirates, the marines noticed a disturbing trend around the area now known as the Peace Route of Grand Line. An alarmingly large amount of money was passing through the hands of fledgling merchants and pirates, all claiming to be selling variations of the extremely rare and quite elusive "Devil Fruit." At the same time, people were clamoring in their shops or on their ships about having been conned; the wretched tasting monstrosity they had purchased did nothing for them at all. There were no resulting super powers from its consumption, and they could still swim in the sea as normal. An extensive Marine investigation followed, slowly tracking down the conned, the conners, and anybody related to the subject of these fake Devil Fruits. One after another, rookie and veteran pirates alike fell prey to this crack team of Marines, the answers gained from these ocean bandits uncovering watery trails from all over Grand Line to arrive at this one island, Goya Island.
Upon their arrival there the first time, Marines found the whole place overrun with these fake fruits and the trees they fell from. How incredibly similar the things look to Devil Fruit, the first people exclaimed, marveling in their perfection for quite a while. And what a shame it would be not to research them, they soon realized. A team of scientists was called in shortly after, hell-bent on trying to discover what the relation was between this new species of produce and its much more well known cousin. And time after time, continuing research called for more equipment, more space, more sun.
Eventually, the constant influx of marine ships brought merchant vessels as well, recognizing that they could make a few quick dollars by catering to their non-marine needs, such as alcohol and women. Then from there, the people serving the alcohol and the women working the bars decided to settle down, and restaurants to feed the new inhabitants were built. The number of homes expanded gradually as more marines and more money became available, and Sanguine Town appeared from almost nothing at all.
In the present, all the Hell Trees outside of Hell's Garden have been cut down to stop the flow of fake fruits to the outside world, and hopefully stop any amount of conning as well. However, any particularly resourceful pirate or underhanded merchant might be able to find some specimens of note if they know the right palms to grease... Better yet, there are rumors that the marines occasionally bring real devil fruits to the island to aid in their study, and something like that would be worth quite the pretty penny on the open market.
