Name of Island: The Frost Kingdom
Size of Island: Large.
Location of Island: 20 miles north of Sedna Island, North Blue.
Inhabitants: This is a deeply patriarchal society, where being a "man's man" is highly valued. Most of the middle-class inhabitants are laborers, like builders and craftsmen, and merchants, who sell the swords, battle-axes, and armor for which the kingdom is famous. A small part of the population is impoverished; none of these people are native to the Frost Kingdom. The current monarch, King Theron, pays a pension to born subjects of his who are unable to work, whether through old age, injury, or the death of the family's patriarch with no other man to take his place. The nobles of the kingdom are men of leisure who spend their days either hunting, wrestling, or exploring the world as warriors. The women of the kingdom can act in a leadership capacity, but more often then not men take the lead in government and business. However, many shops frequented by the middle class are run by women.
Town(s)/Village(s)/City or Cities:
Frost City: A walled city on the west coast of the island. The fortifications consist of a high stone wall with an exterior ditch. The city is entered by a large wooden drawbridge, which is let down every morning at 5am and brought up at 10pm. Immediately past the gate is a long corridor, along which is a guard station holding at least 100 soldiers at any given time. The end of the corridor opens onto the main market of the city, where most of the inhabitants buy their food, clothes, and other supplies. Middle-class residences are also in this area, mixed in with the shops. As one gets closer to Theron's castle, the houses get larger and more elaborate, and the stores get smaller and more expensive. Finally, the castle is enclosed in a complex with the king's land and stables, the royal mausoleum, and extensive hunting grounds containing deer and quails. Although the castle is surrounded by a high wall and guards, anyone (besides criminals) are permitted to enter after relinquishing their weapons at the guard house.
Frost Park: The wilderness of the Frost Kingdom is enclosed by a 50ft. high stone wall. The entrance is a small toll-house on the east edge of the castle grounds; this is where big game hunters can pay an B80,000 beri fee to enter the park and have access to the myriad animals that populate it. There are walled complexes at 10 points in the park. These contain a small building with bathrooms, an infirmary, a concession bar, and extra ammo for sale. Besides those buildings and the containing wall, there are no other man-made structures in the park.
Flora and Fauna:
Frost City:
Fauna: An extremely clean city with minimal vermin. The only nuisance creatures are pigeons and seagulls. Cats are commonly kept as pets, though the elite (and those aspiring to be elite) keep hunting and lap dogs.
Flora: Maple trees are planted along the cobblestone streets, along with small islands of flowers and grass in an effort to beautify the stone city. Some middle-class homes keep small gardens with flowers in their yards. The nobles have small farms that are worked by their servants.
Frost Park:
Fauna: Every type of animal in the entire world, bugs, cows, and more dangerous things, can be found in the wilderness of Frost Park, with the exception of Blugoris, basilisks, and Mino animals (Minotaur, Minozebra, etc.), because the World Government wouldn't sell King Theron any. However, every other manner of strange and dangerous beast-- enormous spiders, man-eating snakes, tiger-apes, monstrous lizards-- is available for intrepid hunters to track and kill. The ultra-dangerous animals are kept in cages in the deepest parts of the Park and released only on request, so that unwary hunters can't accidentally stumble on them. Most of these animals aren't indigenous to the island; only a few benign species of snake, small furry animals, and goats. The rest were imported.
Flora: The Park is a sprawling deciduous forest with grasslands on the far east side of the island. Although King Theron struggled to plant and maintain man-eating flowers and other dastardly or poisonous plants, none of them survived. Thus, the most poisonous plant life in the park is the Frosty Mushroom, which will give eaters a small stomachache.
Island History: Several hundred years ago, the people of this island were divided into villages that didn't get along very well. They fought over every little thing-- whose grass was greener, whose fish were bigger, whose drought was the worst. Any interaction between the villages came to blows and furious silence for weeks afterward. But overall, the rivalries were harmless and served mostly to keep life interesting on Frost Island. That was before the sea people came. A fleet of ships appeared on the horizon one day. The villagers had seen ships before-- they knew what they were-- but these ships were different. The sails were black, and the flag had the oddest symbol on it. The figure of a man holding a spear, standing beside a giant hourglass. This wasn't the flag of any nation or tribe they had relations with. The vessels lingered offshore for several days. Just when the villagers were ready to chalk the odd occurrence up to Just One Of Those Weird Foreign Things, the ships turned in the water and began to bombard the island.
The villagers in the shore community fled further inland to escape the cannons. A meeting was called for the leaders of the village to decide how they would retaliate against the mysterious aggressors. Unfortunately, the largest vessel they had was a 50-man canoe, so attacking them in the water wasn't an option. Luckily for them, the pirates had since gone ashore and begun to rip apart the village on the shoreline. The islanders came together under Georges, the leader of the shore village, and swarmed the attacking pirates. Georges' coronation as the highest power on the island and the first King of Frost was marked by the mass hanging of the pirates. The pirates ships were claimed by Georges and converted into the first trade and defense fleet of the kingdom. Since then, the monarchy has grown more powerful and spread its influence throughout North Blue, primarily through trade.
