SMILEs
An artificial form of Devil Fruit designed to mimic the abilities of the Zoan class, SMILEs are an imperfect attempt at Devil Fruit recreation, having numerous flaws about their design. The biggest flaw of SMILEs is that only one in ten of these Fruits will actually infer their power to the user. Anyone unlucky enough to eat one of these failed specimens gains all of the weaknesses of being a Devil Fruit user with none of the benefits and, to add insult to injury, those who have done so are incapable of openly expressing any emotional state other than smiling and laughing, even if they are undergoing immense anger, sorrow, or other negative emotions. To make matters worse, unlike a regular Devil Fruit whose body becomes inert after the first bite, even a half-eaten SMILE (successful or not) can pass on this terrible negative effect. If you wish to play a character that has eaten a failed SMILE, you can do so at no additional cost.
Those who do eat a successful SMILE instead gain an imperfect version of a Zoan class ability, forming an unusual chimeric state between their normal self and the physiology of an extant animal. For example, Holed’em—who ate a Lion SMILE—gained the presence of a lion’s head and forelegs emerging from his abdominal area and a lion’s tail (in a rather normal position), but showed very few other characteristics. This mix of corresponding and non-corresponding anatomical features is a common trait among those who have eaten a SMILE, but some transformations are so bizarre and extremely mismatched that it might look as if the eater is growing out of the animal, as shown with Hamlet, whose regular human body ended up being positioned at the head end of an entire giraffe’s body, and inheriting the ears and ossicones (horn-like protrusions), which ended up being the only correctly corresponding parts of his entire transformation.
Unlike regular Zoan abilities, SMILEs do not gain the same buffing effects as standard, because of the fact that the animal state and normal state do not correspond properly. However, SMILEs that present strange and incorrect anatomies do have another advantage: Because their physiology does not correspond properly, they may have unusual body plans that can be used in more creative ways, such as having an entire wolf’s head in place of a hand, or even additional limbs that the user would not ordinarily have access to. A SMILE transformation is effectively a permanently altered state of being, up until the user has gained sufficient mastery of their physiology. This anomaly also means that, should a user have the head of an animal manifest elsewhere on their body, that animal will have its own conscious mind and control over its anatomy. Holed’em often struggled with the lion head on his stomach, which he named Kamijiro, which wasn’t a particularly intelligent creature as it would often try and inflict pain on Holed’em (which was shared due to the fact they shared the same body).
SMILEs normally cost 100 X-Poinz and include one Aspect that represents both their animal modifications and an ability granted to them by that unusual anatomy. For example, a Scorpion SMILE might include a stinging tail as part of its transformation, carrying with it a Highly Venomous Aspect.SMILE: Common Improvements
Due to their artificial nature and imperfect design, the development of SMILEs is relatively ambiguous, even for proficient users of their abilities. The majority of possible additional Aspects that can be developed are just as wild and random, though we do know that it is possible for SMILE eaters to attain a greater level of control over their twisted anatomy and suppress it, as shown with Sheepshead being able to suppress his Sheep SMILE manifestation. This ability is free of charge and entirely optional, as it does not do anything particularly special. As an addition, we’ve also included the possibility for SMILE users to modify their anatomy, altering their unusual design via the Body Plan Manipulation Aspect.Body Plan Manipulation
An Aspect unique to SMILE users who have better developed their understanding of their outright bizarre anatomy. It allows them to break free of their usual transformation’s constraints and adjust their body plan as they see fit, such as transforming their hand into the entire upper body of a gorilla, instead of having an additional pair of gorilla arms. This mastery over their abilities does not allow them to spawn more limbs than they would naturally have, nor does it let them achieve any sort of proper Zoan transformation, but it does offer a much greater degree of versatility for those who take the time to master this weird power.
