Playable Races & Species
The world of One Piece is a world dominated primarily by humans, but a vast number of other, increasingly more unusual peoples exist in different corners of the world. On Bon Voyage, a character’s chosen race (sometimes referred to as tribe), determines a number of features about their composition and physiology. However, this has no bearing on a character’s overall abilities outside of a few minor features. A character’s Aspects determine their capabilities, but race has little to no impact on that, with a few notable exceptions.Humans
The most populous race in the world, humans serve as a staple majority in most cultures thanks to their ingenuity, with the nations of the World Government contributing to a large portion of the human population. They vastly outnumber other races, whose own opinions of them tend to vary between extremes, and tend to hold the majority of power in the world. There are, however, many exceptions.
Humans as a whole tend to average between 5’ to 6’ tall (approx. 153 to 183 cm) and have a variety of different builds, skin tones, eye colors, and hair colors. Some have fairer skin or dark complexions, depending on their origins, and some individuals possess unusual features—we’ve seen people with unusually sharp teeth, horns, and even peculiar features that vaguely resemble those of animals. We’ve seen a couple of humans with whisker-like facial hair. While humans can be quite small by nature, some of them can reach impressive heights, growing as large as 10’ (approx. 300 cm) and sometimes larger still! Gecko Moria, an absolutely enormous human, stands at almost 23’ (approx. 700 cm) and Charlotte Linlin stands taller still! Humans can reach up to a “normal” maximum height of 30’ (approx. 914 cm).
Humans have no unique, minor physiological benefits.Fishmen
Typically hailing from the country of Fishman Island in the deepest reaches of the ocean, Fishmen—also called Gyojin (Japanese: “Fish-person”)—are a semi-aquatic tribe of sapient humanoids expressing a variety of piscine features. Often regarded as monstrous by humans who aren’t at all familiar with their presence, they are an extremely diverse people known for their affinity for the sea. For a long time, they were treated as slaves—a fact which some still resent—and though this has been abolished throughout most of the world, there are still those who unjustly maintain this practice.
Fishmen have a significantly more variable appearance than most tribes. Their average height ranges from between 4’ to 8’ tall (approx. 122 to 244 cm), with wildly variable builds and body shapes ranging from more regular and human-like to emphasizing particular piscine features. The color of their skin can be close to that of regular humans, but typically presents as a completely different shade, such as gray, blue, pink, or green—some even have specific color patterns that resemble their associated sea creature. Similarly to humans, Fishmen have hair colors and styles that can vary quite a bit, while some may be completely bald. Particularly large Fishmen can reach up to 30’ tall (approx. 914 cm), though unlike humans, some can grow to truly gigantic proportions.
All Fishmen present features of a particular species of fish or cephalopod, with variations between individuals on how those features present. Arlong—a Sawshark Fishman—had sharp teeth and an elongated, serrated nose. Hatchan, who was an Octopus Fishman, naturally had an elongated mouth and six flexible arms. Fishmen based on fish species typically have a dorsal fin on their back, gills around their collar, and webbing between their fingers and toes. They do not, however, possess tails. Because of their aquatic nature, Fishmen can breathe underwater: This does not count as an Aspect, as it is simply a basic physiological advantage for them.Merfolk
A race directly related to the Fishmen, typically originating from Fishman Island. Merfolk share a large number of characteristics with the Fishman race, but are an iconic symbol for sailors the world over whether they know of their existence or not. Just like the Fishmen, Merfolk are an extremely diverse race known for their affinity for the sea, and similarly faced persecution (and still do in some circles).
Merfolk, just like Fishmen, vary extremely in size, but average between 5’ and 7’ (approx. 153 to 213 cm). This offset is more or less down to the fact that their bodies are a bit longer because of their tails, though this can also depend on the specific build of the Merperson in question. The upper bodies of Merfolk are much more human in appearance than those of Fishmen, though some still show unusual features that may be comparable to their particular sea creature. Their lower bodies are instead replaced with a fish-like tail, whose colors and patterns can be quite variable, and in the case of cephalopod-type Merfolk, those tails are instead an array of limbs. The overall sizes of Merfolk can range between extremes: In rare cases they can be as small as 1’ (approx. 30 cm) in length, and can similarly grow to immense proportions, ranging up to 30’ (approx. 1,220 cm). As proven, some might grow larger still.
All Merfolk present features of a particular species of fish or cephalopod and, just like Fishmen with whom they share these characteristics, those features can vary between individuals. These are usually focused more into their lower body, though some Mermen have been shown to have odd facial features that reflect upon their associated species. Merfolk are all capable of breathing underwater, though most find moving on land to be quite difficult, with some exceptions. For Mermaids who have reached the age of 30, their tail will split to become two functional legs, though this does not happen with Mermen.Giants
Legendary even among humans for their incredible size and strength, Giants are considered to be one of the most frightening races for people to deal with, especially the warriors of Elbaf. Giants tower above all other species, with even the largest of humans being considered as little more than oversized ants to a true Giant. Among the various races, they’re also the ones with the most longevity, as 100 years old is considered to be their prime—the oldest of Giants live to around 300 years and over.
Giants resemble appropriately massive humans in most regards, with many similarities in proportions. On average, Giants stand between 50’ and 65’ (approx. 15.2 to 19.8 meters) tall, but can be as small as 40’ (approx. 12.2 meters) and as tall as 75’ (approx. 22.8 meters). Giants do occasionally express unusual features in a way similar to humans, but for the most part they are rather standard.
Among the races available to play on Bon Voyage, Giants are the only race that requires a specific Aspect as part of their starting abilities. To represent their immense size and weight, Giants have a tier one (1) Gigantic Aspect by default. As a result, they only start with two Aspect Vouchers, as opposed to the usual three that other characters would begin with.Ancient Giants
A rarity in the world, these enormous individuals tower above regular Giants and possess more unique features, including prominent horns and unusual skin color. Oars (although deceased) possessed a deep red skin tone, while his descendant Little Oars Jr. had light green skin. Their large appearances are more reminiscent of traditional Japanese Oni. Their immense size and strength is even more terrifying than that of a regular Giant, growing up to 200’ (approx. 61 meters), and are one of the only playable options that start with a tier two (2) Gigantic Aspect. In exchange, they do not start with Aspect Vouchers.Dwarves
An elusive race in part due to their scarcity and their size, the Dwarves are the smallest known humanoid race in the world! Their tiny stature and adorable features aside, these peoples have become something of a myth or legend in many of the countries they inhabit, such as how the Tontatta Tribe of Green Bit were simply known as “Fairies” to the denizens of Dressrosa, with few knowing of their existence. Some groups of Dwarf refer to humans as “big humans”, so it seems not all tribes actively distinguish themselves from most people of the world.
The average height of a Dwarf isn’t exactly clear in canon, but it seems they range between 7” to 9” (approx. 18 to 23 cm), with some individuals growing just a few inches taller, or being slightly smaller. In general, a Dwarf can easily sit or stand in the open palm of an average human. The largest of Dwarves reach about 12” (30 cm) in height, but this is similar to how some humans can grow to enormous proportions. Besides their tiny proportions and petite features, they seem to share rather standard human varieties when it comes to skin tones, eye colors, and hair.
Dwarves possess bushy tails that can vary quite significantly in coloration and design, though this isn’t really explained much canonically. These tails can be used as an additional limb for the purpose of combat, as shown by some of the warrior members of the Tontatta, or may simply be decorative. A notable feature of Dwarves is that, despite their size, they can easily reach levels of physical strength that put them above average humans. Big things in small packages!Sky People
Also known as Sky Islanders, this race of people are found almost exclusively in the lands of the White Sea, and form various tribes and cultures. Their most common and distinctive feature is the presence of a pair of white, feathered wings upon their backs, but it is this feature that varies most between tribes. Canonically, the Skypieans, Birkans, and Shandians were all of this humanoid race, but each had distinctive cultures and differing wing shapes. Despite their rather unusual cultures, extreme climates, and winged design, they heavily resemble humans in almost every other conceivable way.
Just as humans do, Sky People average out between 5’ and 6’ (approx. 153 to 183 cm) in height, and might demonstrate more unusual features. They can, however, reach a maximum height of 30’ (approx. 914 cm) tall, so for the most part they are seldom different from humans. The exact designs of their wings vary from tribe to tribe, but are not typically capable of flight due to their smaller size. This is especially true of the Shandians and Skypieans, whose wings just about protruded over their shoulders, but a variety of possible tribes exist with their own unique wing structures. The only consistency here is the fact that their wings are always feathered.
Due to their origins, Sky People tend to have no issue in environments where the air is thin and the oxygen density is low.Long-Limb Tribes
While some of the races that exist in the world of One Piece are quite wild in their appearance, some are distinctly more human-like, and the Longarm, Longleg, and Snakeneck tribes are great examples of this. They show almost no differences from the average human population, but are distinguished by one particular feature that makes them stand out massively. While generally bunched together here, they’re still quite different.Longarms
True to their name, people of the Longarm Tribe have unusually long arms, which possess an extra elbow joint. These elongated limbs, when fully extended, are usually about the same length as their torso and legs combined, meaning their hands hover at around ankle height when they allow their arms to fall slack. Longarms stand between 5’ and 6’ (approx. 153 to 183 cm) tall, but can reach heights of up to 30’ (approx. 914 cm).Longlegs
Those of the Longleg Tribe have (unsurprisingly) very long legs, which are about twice as long as the legs of a comparable human. Unlike Longarms, they do not possess an additional joint. Due to their unusual anatomy, Longlegs are naturally taller than most other races, so their average height sits between 8’ to 10’ (approx. 244 to 300 cm), even when their upper body proportions are no greater than that of a human of average height. As a result, the maximum potential height of a person of this tribe is 45’ (approx. 1371 cm), which would be equal in upper body proportions to a human that is 30’ (approx. 914 cm) tall.Snakenecks
The Snakeneck Tribe are a group of people who have unusually long necks, several times longer than those of a normal human. These elongated necks mean that the tribe stand much taller than regular humans, with an average height of between 8’ to 10’ (approx. 244 to 300 cm), placing them on par with members of the Longleg Tribe. Similarly to Longleg Tribe members, Snakenecks who somehow reach the bodily proportions of a gargantuan human end up standing up to 45’ (approx. 1371 cm), though as around a third of this is sheer neck length, the rest of their proportions balance out to around that of a 30’ (approx. 914 cm) tall human.
Aside from their obvious anatomical benefits, these tribes of people have no particular minor benefits.Three-Eyes
One of the rarest races in the world of One Piece (as far as we know), people of the Three-Eye tribe have not yet been properly seen in the series, but we do have a half-human example in the form of Charlotte Pudding! Supposedly, they have the potential to achieve a “true awakening”, but the exact process by which this is achieved is a mystery to us.
Given the usual distinctions of hybrid races, it’s probably safe to assume that true Three-Eyed people greatly resemble humans in almost every way, with the one notable feature of a third eye located in the center of their forehead. Following the usual human stature, Three-Eyes average between 5’ and 6’ tall (approx. 153 to 183 cm) and can reach up to 30’ (approx. 914 cm) in height in the case of exceptional individuals.
Three-Eyes do not have any notable minor abilities.Minks
A humanoid tribe originating from the New World—specifically the hidden country of Zou—whose most prominent feature are their animalistic appearances. Minks are so rare outside of their homeland and the New World that they are practically never seen by people, and those that are aware of their existence are usually led to believe that they are a closed nation that is hostile to outsiders. This isn’t necessarily true, as the canonical denizens of Zou did in fact present themselves quite openly and with hospitality to outsiders once they realized they were not the allies of a recent enemy.
The Minks tend to share their height ranges with those of Fishmen, standing between 4’ to 8’ (approx. 122 to 244 cm) on average, but ranging up to a maximum height of 30’ (approx. 914 cm). The most distinct features of the Minks are their animal characteristics, including their fur coats—also called “Mink”—which they consider to be the pride of their race. Some might have a solid color of coat, while others might be striped or mottled, depending on the specific animal species their physiology is derived from. Mink don’t usually express any unusual coloration, but their eye and hair colors (some of them have distinct head hair as well as fur) are just as variable as those of humans.
All Mink are based on a particular species of mammal, but the chosen mammal must have fur to count as a viable Mink type. A Mink’s presentation can vary wildly, even between individuals that share the same mammal species, but they usually have common features derived from their species. Canine Minks tend to have dog-like snouts, for example. Squirrel Minks have large, bushy tails, while bovine Minks have notable horns and hooved feet! Mink as a race are not well-suited to hot environments, primarily due to their fur, though some types might have an easier time if their particular mammal is adapted to those sorts of environments.
The majority of Mink can also generate electricity within their fur to empower their attacks—an ability known as Electro (which functions as an Aspect). In addition, a Mink who witnesses the light of the full moon awakens a primal, powerful form known as Sulong (“Moon Lion”), which functions as an Overdrive. These abilities must be purchased as normal.Lunarians
Once known as a tribe of “gods”, but now almost completely eradicated from the world, Lunarians are an extremely rare race of humanoids that once inhabited the Red Line. Information on the whereabouts of a living Lunarian is so valuable that the World Government will pay handsomely for it.
Lunarians are easily distinguished by a few features of their physiology and appearance, possessing a rich brown skin tone and silvery or pure white hair. However, their most notable features are the pair of black feathered wings that sprout from their backs. These immense wings are much larger than those present on the Sky People, and King was demonstrated as being capable of some degree of flight (this would be an Aspect). In terms of stature, Lunarians average between 5’ and 6’ (approx. 153 to 183 cm) tall, but can grow as large as 30’ (approx. 914 cm), much like humans.
Lunarians are said to be capable of surviving some of the most extreme and hostile conditions on the planet, but for the purpose of Bon Voyage, any abilities like this should usually be represented by Aspects. A common ability (Aspect) for Lunarians is the ability to generate flame from their body. As demonstrated by King, this flame can be turned on and off almost at will, and may have some influence on their speed and durability.Buccaneers
A nearly extinct race of humanoids, the Buccaneers are nearly identical to humans in almost every conceivable way, but have practically been wiped out or taken into slavery for a currently unknown crime they supposedly committed long, long ago. They are said to possess the blood of Giants.
Buccaneers are indistinguishable from humans in almost every regard, but are known for being stronger and, most importantly, bigger than average. However, outside of blood tests, there’s no real way to discern one from another unusually tall human. Buccaneers seem to average around 15’ to 20’ (approx. 456 to 609 cm) in height, but growing as large as 30’ (approx. 914 cm) is not only possible, but far more likely when compared to other races.
Buccaneers have no particular physiological benefits.Animals
Not all characters in One Piece belong to a human-like species. Sometimes, you might want to play an animal character, and characters like Chopper and Pappag can exist here on Bon Voyage. Animals vary drastically in the world, with some very exotic species existing, but characters of this type are mostly confined to being based on species native to our planet. However, we do allow some leniency in this field, such as making up unique species of particular genera with unusual (but not otherworldly) characteristics, just for the sake of consistency.
Animal characters are far too varied to have a given average height or size, but should not be smaller than 6” (15 cm). This means that microscopic species are not allowed, and that small creatures such as insects and other tiny arthropods should be scaled up appropriately. Particularly massive animals can grow to appropriately immense sizes, so some species might match the height of Giants. An animal character can exchange one of their starting Aspect Vouchers for the tier one (1) Gigantic Aspect, or (for the extremely massive creatures) exchange all three of their starting Aspect Vouchers for the tier two (2) Gigantic Aspect.Robots
Some characters are not living creatures, but artificial constructs designed by scientists, built of plastic and metal or other materials. Robots can range from small to large, humanoid to animal-like, or even take on shapes and forms that don’t correlate with other living creatures—their appearance is only really as limited as the resources their creator used to design them.
Due to their immensely variable designs, Robots don’t have an average height range, and can range from around the same size as a human to significantly smaller or much larger. Robots should not be smaller than 6” (15 cm) in height, and can be built up to heights of around 30’ (914 cm). However, it is possible that they might be built even larger still, and may exchange one of their starting Aspect Vouchers to gain the tier one (1) Gigantic Aspect, or even trade in all three of their starting Aspect Vouchers for the tier two (2) Gigantic Aspect.
Robots are highly versatile, but extremely unusual—a rarity in the world. Because they have a particular power source and are not organic creatures, they usually aren’t affected by things such as diseases or environments with low oxygen. Due to not being living beings, Robots are immune to Haki that relies upon sensing intent, emotion, intimidation, and otherwise interacting with the will of an opponent, but are also incapable of developing Haki.
Cyborgs
While listed here, anyone who becomes a cyborg isn’t actually of an entirely different race. Rather, a cyborg is a living individual (of any organic tribe) that has been augmented or adjusted through the inclusion of machinery into their usual body format. Cyborgs range drastically from being mostly normal people of a particular race with a prosthetic limb or two, to individuals who have replaced a significant amount of their body with technology. While Franky is the most obvious example of a true cyborg in the series, plenty of other characters with replacement limbs and similar augmentations have shown up as supporting cast members from various factions. Some cyborgs choose to undergo the conversion out of want, others out of need, but the exact reasoning behind a character’s transition to cybernetics can vary almost as wildly as the kinds of equipment they place in their bodies!
As a general rule, cyborgs inherit most (if not all) of the features and general abilities of their original race. Becoming a cyborg does not change the character’s ancestral origins—replacing various body parts with machinery doesn’t stop you from being a human, Fishman, etc—no matter how extreme the conversion. However, some cyborgs might be almost entirely machine, which could interfere with the natural abilities that their original race provides. Ultimately, these options are up to you as the player, but should still make sense. A cyborg’s specific augmentations and enhancements should be treated as equipment Aspects, but may be counted as simple utilities if they have no real combat purposes.Bio-Experiment
A much rarer example of individuals whose bodies are modified beyond their standard natures are those who have been experimented upon (or have boldly managed to experiment on themselves) and have had their very biology altered. Only the most bold, brazen, and unethical of scientific minds would dare to commit such an atrocity as this, but it has happened, and the fruits of their labor walk the world. Much like a mechanical cyborg, the modifications that define a bio-experiment can vary massively, from simple underlying modifications to significant alterations more fitting of a Frankenstein’s monster theme! Individuals such as Modified Humans and the gigantic Numbers exist, so a Bio-Experiment can reasonably exchange their starting Aspect Vouchers for the tier one (1) or tier two (2) Gigantic Aspect.Hybrids
Despite the massive variety of different races in the world of One Piece, it is heavily suggested that the various peoples are capable of producing offspring with partners of an entirely different tribe. One of the earliest known examples of this is Sapi, the fishmonger from Loguetown (though his hybrid status was only revealed in extra content), who is half-human, half-Fishman. However, as the series has progressed, we’ve seen more and more examples of hybrid peoples, with the numerous children of Big Mom covering a large range of half-human individuals.
Hybrids typically demonstrate heavy similarities to one of their bloodlines than they do the other, with other features expressing themselves in variable amounts. This is especially prevalent in half-human hybrids, with Big Mom’s hybrid offspring heavily resembling their paternal race, but is not an absolute rule. Charlotte Praline resembled a mermaid in every way, while Sapi was almost entirely human in appearance, with a notable fin protruding from the back of his head being the only hint towards his Fishman ancestry. Most hybrids are limited to the same average heights and maximum height potential of 30’ (approx. 914 cm) of their parents’ tribes, accounting for the proportional differences of merfolk, long-legs, and snakenecks, as well as the tiny size of Dwarves. Half-Giants can reach equally massive heights, but may generally be a little smaller, though still large enough (in most cases) to require the tier one (1) Gigantic Aspect. While hybrids are typically referred to by their parentages, the offspring of a Fishman and a Giant are called Wotan.
Not all hybrids are half-blooded! Some characters might have a half-blood as one (or both) of their parents, resulting in a less dominant race being a part of their bloodline. Chimney’s ancestry is almost entirely human (and she resembles a human in every way), but her grandmother is a mermaid, which seems to have no bearing on Chimney’s physiology aside from her incredible swimming strength. Characters who have several different tribes as part of their ancestry also exist, but the more races there are, the less prominent the features.
Animals and Robots are the only playable race options that cannot become hybrids—either with one another or with other races. In a similar fashion, if a Fish-person and a Mer-person have offspring, they do not create a hybrid because they are genetically very similar. Cyborgs and Bio-Experiments can be hybrids, and nothing would prevent a character from being a mix of both, but these options are entirely separate from the character’s original race(s).
