Since Theodore Barker had been left on Toroa island, his stay had been anything but pleasant. He has had to find his own way to survive without food or money, endure being carried in the air by a large raven, and rescue an old friend from a man who accused him of being a killer. However, none of that was as bad as having to bear with that very man’s presence and watch as Nellie fell for his charming act. All the while, the pair were forced to remain with him if they had any hope of not being murdered themselves, and of clearing Tedd’s name of the formerly mentioned accusations.
It wasn’t all bad - they were offered some very nice accommodation and the food was delicious. Delicious as it was, however, Mr Barker couldn’t stomach the interaction between their captor, who identified himself as Jonathan Campbell, and Nellie while he ate it. After a brief argument, he removed himself from their company and moved to the kitchen with his meal to eat alone.
It didn’t take very long for the universe to punish him for his spiteful behaviour, as a tall man suddenly barged into their hotel room by kicking the door open, and immediately fired his gun into the room. Perhaps it was lucky that he had left the room earlier, as it seemed that Tedd was hardly even noticed; the man’s attention was on Michael and Nellie as he shot wildly at the most obvious location where he hoped to hit anyone, clearly not aiming very well.
The loud bangs that rang through the air startled Tedd, causing him to just barely manage to safely put his plate of food down on the cupboard that he had been leaning against before it would fall from his hands and shatter to the ground. At the same time, Nellie screamed and was knocked over to the floor by Michael, who leapt to her protection and shielded her from harm.
In fear of Nellie being hurt, the barber ran from his spot to rush the intruder, immediately grabbing his shoulder to push his body into the wall. With his free hand, he grabbed the man’s wrist to twist his arm backward and remove the revolver from his grasp.
“Who are you? Are you the one who killed that woman here in Toroa’s capital?”
Unfortunately for Tedd, however, the young man’s desperation was enough to get him through the painful break that was almost self-inflicted and he displayed no interest in answering any questions as he forced his body to twist and turn against the barber’s hold and lunge at him. With the gun no longer in his possession, the attacker pulled out a knife, swiping madly at Tedd as if in fearful frenzy. Mr Barker was on the back foot as he now found himself swiftly stepping in all directions to avoid the enemy’s blade, until he suddenly had his back against the wall and nowhere to go. Seizing the opportunity, the brunet leapt at Theodore with wild eyes.
“You need to die!” The man’s knife was thrust in the direction of Tedd’s throat.
It never reached its target, however, as the barber reacted faster, raising his own bladed weapon, the straight razor that sat on his belt, in a quick swiping motion across his throat. It was messy, but it worked - the knife that would have ended his life was dropped and the bleeding man collapsed shortly after.
It was kill or be killed, he told himself, as Tedd stood over the very still body, his own clothes now stained and the evidence of what he’d just done all over his hands. Kill or be killed… breathing heavily, the ex-convict stared down at his victim, but the young man that lay there was not the man that he currently saw. Mr Barker was hardly in the hotel room anymore. His mind took him somewhere else, to a much darker place, reliving a memory from his time in prison.
Nellie’s gasp upon witnessing such a brutal act brought him back to the present to see a look of pure horror on the girl's face.
