According to the map, the labyrinth's entrance should lie somewhere at the base of this gigantic mountain.
Jungles had a habit of being swelteringly hot, something about giant trees and dense foliage trapping heat near the ground. This Island though, because of the fierce winds thrashing about the seas surrounding it seemed to have a giant natural cooling system. That was probably what led to the unique circumstances of a jungle with a spring Island climate. It was an interesting natural phenomenon, but one that came with a different set of problems. Not that the two women currently braving that jungle were affected by feeling hot all that much... No, it was the winds that howled even through the treetops near the island's interior. The silver-haired one of the peculiar pair was rather more struggling to hold the crudely drawn map she was studying steady in the winds then showing signs of heat slowing her down. The constant winds rather made it feel pleasantly cool for those unfortunate enough to thread on this place with the sensitive skin still intact.
I still don't get why you are so adamant about visiting a labyrinth where some long-dead civilization of long-dead people used to trap their long-dead prisoners with the promise of freedom If they managed to escape. Do you want us to get lost down there?
The second of the pair, nearly identical to the first save for a palette swap was standing on the tip of a fallen over tree, looking across the forest. If it wasn't for the bright yellow color of her hair, clothes, and patches of golden metal embedded in a body sculpted from wood you might just mistake her for a human-shaped branch. The voice coming from the clockwork doll had a distinct edge of dissatisfaction to it about their current situation, or rather the reason why they had ventured so deep onto the shores of a, particularly hostile island.
What is this? My stubbornly gung-ho sister is complaining about going on an adventure?
The silver-haired of the pair carefully folded up the map and in a stoic and airy voice responded in the most laconic of manners. How very typical, when Kiki followed her whims she was simply expected to follow without complaint. Yet when she wanted to visit a place it was an endless deluge of complaints. A weary sort of frown colored her carefully sculpted face of ashen complexion.
No, I'm just not sure why anyone would hide treasure in a place they set prisoners loose in.
The Golden maned twin responded in a dry sarcastic tone as she hopped down from the fallen log. There was very little she could make out even from up there. These trees were the size of genuine giants and they obstructed all view across the forest floor. At the very least the treetops were rattled so much by the raging winds that despite the dense treetops plenty of light made its way down here. That made the flora of this place slightly unique too. Ohh certainly there were the usual mosses, creeping vines, and plenty of mushrooms that humid climates fostered. But it was much rarer to see such an abundant array of colorful flowers at ground level.
But, isn't a cursed ruined labyrinth from an ancient civilization exactly the sort of place you would look for treasure?
Again, the sardonic wit of the pale wooden twin doll cut through the protests without genuinely addressing any of the complaints directly at all. Rather than disagree, Haiki keenly knew that simply answering questions or complaints with a cryptic question in return was far more likely to get her stubborn sister to see things from a different perspective, rather than dig in her heels and stick to her own conclusions.
Yes! But I'm the irresponsible one! You are supposed to talk me out of stupid ideas! Instead, we've been following a map you got from a dodgy pirate. Who promised you fabulous treasure. Hidden on a hostile jungle island if you just wouldn't take him in.
It was working too, the exasperated response that her rhetorical question garnered was a definitive admission. After all, the ruins of an ancient civilization WERE the sort of place you would search for treasure. Not that that seemed to cover the impatience of the hyperactive golden twin. They had been circling the base of this gigantic mountain for hours now, in fact, she had only looked for a high place to survey from to see if they had gotten any closer. Though the massive peak could easily be seen towering above the massive treetops from anywhere on the island.
Don't you like treasure hunts?
It was another, carefully posed and innocent-seeming question to which Haiki already knew the answer. Kiki let out an irritated sigh as she slapped the palm of her wooden hand against her forehead. The slight elevation of the floor she saw from up there told her they had already strayed onto the base of the mountain. But it wasn't so much the concept of this trip she objected to. It was the fact that her sister had let a bounty mark bribe her out of turning him in with a dodgy treasure map.
Stop asking me questions you know I'm going to have to say yes to! Since we got here I had to beat up some weird monkeys, some weird vultures that tried to steal YOU away, and then your map led us into a bunch of holes that you swore would get us into this labyrinth and instead got us stuck in a nest full of giant spiders! That pirate was full of it when he said he saw more gold than he could carry down there. he just wanted to send us to someplace hoping we'd get ourselves killed so we wouldn't come back for him!
Well, they certainly had had her share of troubles coming this far. Especially when you summed it up like that the silver-haired twin had to admit that if her sister had been the one to drag her here she surely would have been just as frustrated. Yet she folded her arms and simply gave the golden-haired twin a raised-eyebrow stare of incredulity. Because unlike her, she knew that her sisters' frustration lay with none of the problems she had listed.
I don't understand why you are complaining, you like all of those things don't you?
Well, it was true that fighting the monkeys was fun, and seeing her sister getting carried off by that thieving bird had her laughing for a good 30 seconds before she actually went after her to save her. It was the next part that gave her the shivers just thinking back on them.
You are the only one who likes ghost stories and spiders! both those things creep me out!
There was no way that she was cold in this climate, or any climate considering most of her 'skin' was made from wood. But her still fleshy cheeks shivered as she thought back to getting wrapped up in the webbing of a massive spider. If Haiki hadn't cut her lose and she subsequently slice up everything in a 100-foot radius before she ran as fast as her legs could carry her... they might not be laughing about it now. She really did not like spiders
Hmmm~ But you are right. I do like those things. At least you got to beat all those things up. You did like that part right?
The silver-haired twin didn't pay the winning too much mind. After all, she was certain that Kiki, despite her complaints, was mostly enjoying herself. The spiders might have soured her a little, but she just couldn't say no to an adventure. Both of them knew it, and a hidden treasure hidden on a place called death island was obviously a wild adventure waiting to happen. No, it was already happening. The golden cyborg sighed, rubbing the knuckles of her hand. She looked rather eager to punch something else right now...
You can be such a dork, you know that?
