Raquel #23 — Brandon #23
From atop her perch, Ostaga Raquel heard the announcement loud and clear, with only the winds that caressed the tower’s upper limits serving to billow in her ears. It was a sound she was well accustomed to — a sound that served to relax. This was the sound that, as little more than an infant, she would often associate with comfort and safety. It always seemed to remind her of her mother’s voice, gentle and soothing; perhaps that was why she found such sanctity amidst the highest spars and lines.
“The local resources are returned to the island inhabitants,” Madgin added. His voice lacked something. An energy? That playful excitement that seemed to lace every word. Yet, as the rigging expert found a good line and abseiled her way quite effortlessly down the tower again, she noticed that low chuckle as it exploded into something more. “I think ya vastly underestimate yer impact on people, kid!” the madman in the hard hat laughed as Raquel swung herself into a gentle, calculated landing not too far from the boys.“I’d bet good money,” Madgin smiled:
“Yer little buds will follow suit…”
“Ru?” Brandon chirped, observing the man with equal parts caution and curiosity. To merely approach this man was like swimming up to a seal in open water, yet he gave off no predatory aura — not one that could be discerned by primal instinct. His was an aura of confidence to match Leonard’s own, yet even Brandon could see that subtle tremble of excitement in the one-eyed wildman’s form; the shudder of anticipation. If only the paper penguin could have truly understood why he gave off such an impression. Beady eyes looked at Leonard.
“Oreo,” Brandon squawked calmly, patting LeClerc’s leg with his flipper in reassurance and simply looking up at the swordsman with an avian equivalent of a trusting smile. Not something humans could typically perceive, but the sentiment was there all the same. Besides, Brandon knew what this man was capable of — a human who was perhaps a lot more aware of the world around him than he cared to realise. Even as the wheels spun, the penguin showed confidence, nodding as the final test was announced.
Raquel offered a nod.
“You seemed so uncertain through all of this,” she said to Angelo, stepping next to him as the ship’s inner mechanisms worked to reveal the most bizarre and advanced aspect of its structure yet. It really couldn’t be denied; the quality of the vessel upon which they stood was something else, even if the Construction Pirates were pushing it to its absolute limits. “And so did that penguin,” she uttered in continuation, eyes briefly shifting to the bird as he waddled his way back to them, offering one of those strange salutes to Leonard. She let her thoughts pool for a moment, then, as the two Captains made their declarations, she asked the martial artist and the penguin one last question:“Do you think he stands a chance…?”{Post Synposis:—}
Raquel descends in time for the final challenge, speaking to Angelo as Brandon offers Leonard a reassuring pat!
