Hey, everyone!
After some discussions between the staff, we’ve decided on a few tweaks to one of the most unusual and formerly least understood mechanics of One Piece: Haki!
So, what’s actually changing?
The answer here is “not a lot”. We knew hardly anything when the system was created, but now we’ve been shown a lot more about the functionality of Haki. The biggest change that we’re implementing is that Haki will no longer be a Fighting Style, but instead become a special Trait that has to be purchased. That’s really the only big change from how it currently works.
But what’s new?!
Now that we’ve seen quite a bit of Haki, we’ve been figuring out ways to advance it and - with recent revelations within the Manga - we’ve come up with a progression system for it. At some point soon we’ll be amending our Haki Development details to accommodate these changes, but here’s a breakdown of the types of Haki and what’s being included. Basically, Haki will allow for characters to develop “Aspects” (from a select set), meaning that there will be some degree of customisation earlier in the Haki development tree, before culminating at the strongest uses of this Universal ability.
Busōshoku Haki
Armament Haki has a few additional uses beyond just allowing somebody to hit harder, so we’ll be including the recently introduced Ryūō (“Flowing Sakura”), which will allow characters to project their Haki a short distance from their body for both offensive and defensive purposes, as well as the ability to create a Full-Body Hardening effect, as shown by Vergo and Pica. This will all come together with the Advanced Ryūō ability, allowing a character to push their Haki into things in order to destroy from within!
Kenbunshoku Haki
Observation Haki will be gaining its own improvements as well, which will be amplified effects of what it can normally do. The first of which is the Advanced Empathy effect, something shown by Otohime, which allows people to truly feel and share in the inner emotions of others. We’ll also be adding the ability to vastly extend the effective Range of one’s Mantra, such as how Rayleigh was able to detect the presence of 500 creatures that were stronger than Luffy across an entire island, well beyond his regular senses. This will all come together in the ability to See the Future, just like Katakuri, though we will be including the respectable caveat that it can’t be used to God-Mod or force your partners to do things.
Haōshoku Haki
Yes, that’s right! Even Conqueror’s Haki will be receiving this change, including the ability to take Authority over beasts, as well as the ability to Control who is affected when you unleash one of these incredible displays of willpower. It should all come together to form Advanced Conqueror’s Haki; the kind of force that was able to affect the environment through sheer presence alone.
We’re still figuring out a few things about how this will all work; this isn’t going to be all there is to it, but look forward to this change coming in the near future! It’ll also be bringing Haki in line with how we treat NPCs, so stay tuned!
