Personality
--At heart, Francis is a kind individual who has a bad habit of thinking far more about others than about himself. In fact, he is largely an empathetic person who has a bleeding heart that hurts himself more than it helps him. Unfortunately, this is not always obvious. Any kindness that he possesses is normally lost beneath the outward irritation that he normally seems to project. To most, he tends to come across as irritable, easily frustrated, and an overall curmudgeon. This has largely become worse with age. What most do not tend to realize is that most of his temperament is a result of his Major Depressive Disorder.
Self-loathing is something that comes to him quite easily, leaving him quick to see fault in himself than others. On some level, this is merely a result of his psychology but on another it is part of how he has been raised. Francis has only had so many ways to blossom, life having offered more reasons to feel as if he should slink and feel worse about himself. This has left him with an array of bad habits, such as smoking and drinking, that he controls in a particularly iffy manner.
Francis is a fairly intelligent and perceptive individual. Moreover, he has a fairly good memory. However, he has not bothered on putting any knowledge he has gathered to use. As far as he is concerned, it's not the World Government's concern what he does with his skills and, to be honest, the last thing he truly wants to do with anything he has learned is help them.
Francis is notably quite secretive, particularly in regards to himself and his sexuality. It's not entirely beyond his realization that sharing information can be a dangerous thing to do. As such, he tends to treat himself as the most trustworthy person he knows.
Appearance
--While not unpleasant to look at, Francis could easily be described as possessing a classical appearance. Moreover, he appears to border on the line of looking like a delinquent, his appearance drifting away from what is normally considered conventionally proper. He is a fairly tall individual who is made up of a contradictory mixture of muscle and awkwardness. While it is clear that he is quite fit, traits such as his nose or ears tend to easily make him look awkward. As a result, he has taken to keeping his hair long over the years.
His hair is a dark brown. At its longest, it sits just past his ears. His eyes are a mulish brown. He is pale and seems to be incapable of gaining a noticeable tan.

Background
--
Francis was the eldest of a pair of twins, born only a few moments before his sister Janette was. He cannot recall a single memory in regards to his parents, possessing next to no knowledge about either of his parents due to the secretive nature of his uncle who had raised the two of them in their place.
What he did not know was that where he was quick to assume the role of orphan both of his parents were quite alive, though whether they were healthy is entirely arguable. It was a secret his uncle never bothered to tell them- then again, the man didn't tell the two a lot- and perhaps one could blame the World Government for that. What could be said is that his parents were both part of the Resistance, both given a different fate, and their children left with Arthur Sommer in the hope that their children might have normality with him.
Where his sister never prodded, Francis was never happy with the silence, was never happy with a lot of things. His uncle was a kind man who was prone to spoiling his niece and nephew, but it didn't pass his nephew's notice that he didn't tell them a lot. The fact that whatever happened seemed to often change story wise made it all the easier for him to notice.
Still, he endured. His uncle was not a man well suited for parenthood. He was an eccentric sort of man who spoiled his children and often left the parenting to others, such as when he sent Francis to be trained in swordsmanship. Moreover, he was the sort of individual who lied often and was fairly naive. While he treated his niece and nephew well, he easily managed to gather a poor reputation in the village they lived in, particularly since he was prone to suspicion and was a well known womanizer, leaving him unable to keep a wife for long. The only true constant in his life seemed to be his niece and nephew, something which it was easy to tell others often thought should not even be within his life.
It wasn't nearly as bad as others liked to act though. Francis' sister, Janette, was happy and he supposed he was happy enough. Things were just a bit chaotic at times.
Perhaps the only true annoyance came in the form of when he learned swordsmanship. Francis had never meshed well with others, but it was something he tried to hide. It was nobody else's business as far as he was concerned. Yet, it seemed to be inevitable that things wouldn't keep simple and calm. One day, he met another boy who seemed completely incapable of keeping his nose out of Francis' business. Their first conversation turned into a fight, Francis losing his temper and turning to violence. It didn't stop there. The two seemed to get along like fire and ice, unable to get along for more than a few minutes. He wanted nothing more than for him to disappear.
Yet, contradictory, his eye seemed to always drift to the other boy. If he were entirely honest, the boy seemed to pay him a strange amount of attention, see things he wasn't used to others seeing. It was as infuriating as it was comforting.
There was nothing but confusion was he was finally granted what he'd always wanted. He'd thought he would be happy when they finally parted ways. He didn't expect to be disheartened. Like a virus, the other male plagued his mind. He'd hardly realized it, but somewhere along the lines he'd gained a crush, one which he decidedly wanted nothing to do with.
He turned his attention to gaining a simple normality and managed to get a job at one of the local shops as a cook. It was simple work, nothing to brag about, and it made money. Admittedly, he was good enough at it and he found it relaxing, but he also found that it was not something he wanted to do for long. Once he had enough money, he quit the job and bought some swords. Where he was going to go seemed inconsequential. He'd be happy enough jumping on a raft or sneaking on a passenger ship.
What he did know was that he wanted to get away from the island. As such, he decided to take up bounty work instead. It seemed like easy enough work to make quick money. He's not entirely sure where he's going, but he wants to do something with his life. He's just not sure he wants to keep spending it doing what he's decided to do.
