”Thank you again for escorting me Miss 21.” Tamina spoke with a broad smile that betrayed the fact that she was currently walking through what amounted to an old sewer. It was a very rarely used passageway that had long since stopped serving even its original function of taking sewage out of East Winchester. Now she was very sure that she was one of a handful of people on the whole island that knew it existed at all. So she used it from time to time to bypass the security checkpoint and get out to the small forest on the outskirts of her city. Not that she had any reason to worry about the Marines. She was a law abiding citizen after all. However sometimes she simply didn’t want to bother with being searched, questioned, or delayed.
“No problem Tammy. It was getting real boring there anyways.” Cog’s spoke up. This in itself had proved pretty boring as well, escorting Tamina out of the city. The bounty hunter had hoped for a little more action given all the ruckus people had been making over these monster rats and cows everyone was gibbering about. Cogs had yet to see a single bizarre creature or person for that matter.
“Oh I know this must not be very exciting for someone like you. But I do very much appreciate it!” Tamina smiled, brushing her bright green hair over an ear, tucking it up into her bandana. The girl was a modest beauty with fair skin and blue eyes, the kind that surely turned heads amongst her neighborhood and would likely not have any trouble finding a good suitor one day. But off of her island she would quickly be eclipsed by the exotic features and figures of women abroad. Still. 21 had seen enough of her kindness and compassion to know she was a good person. A really good one. The kind that deserved to be protected. So despite her boredom, she felt obligated to see her safely out and back into the city.
”Don’t worry. Cog’s doesn’t have any bounties as long as West Winchester is locked up.” 21 was in a squat position, legs spread, arms hanging forward limply. Sticking out of the sides of her feet, attached to her ankles was a gear roughly half a foot across. The gear was slowly spinning, moving her forward in time with her wards pace. She looked incredibly bored in her slouched position, but she also looked equally awkward. Tamina consistently found herself giggling at the sight, which secretly amused Cog’s. She liked making people laugh, or feel awkward....preferably both. So she continued to do it both out of laziness, and entertaining Tamina.
”Yeah sorry about that. Must be quite the disappointment huh?” They continued to banter mildly back and forth for several minutes before finally coming to an old, unused grate that covered a storm drain. It swung open easily, but noisily. Tamina sought to pick some flowers native to the island, as well as some various herbs that she could not grow in her own personal garden. Such was the girls trade. She maintained a small but valuable garden of herbs which couldn’t grow naturally on the island. Thus she made fair coin on the side selling poultices and medicines made from said herbs. Still. When she needed to she would venture into the woods to get additional ingredients. This task had been made more difficult as of late due to the appearance of unnaturally large rodents and cows, both of which were hyper aggressive and very dangerous.
At the same time, West Winchester had been strangely quiet. The pirates which were usually very rowdy out there, and often got into skirmishes with the local marines, had been sticking to their city. The marines had taken advantage of this and finally created a perimeter around the district, or what they considered the dangerous portion. This meant Cog’s couldn’t get inside to hunt any bounties or crack some pirate skulls. Though she looked like a meek, scrawny teenager in her white bodysuit and red coveralls, the white-haired, blood red eyed little girl was as savage as any beast on the island once she was given something to hunt. Tamina only knew the silly gear-footed girl who scooted around making weird noises and bad puns. She didn’t know the predator lurking behind those disarming actions.
