“Alright, nobody move!” called a grungy looking pirate holding two flintlock pistols. They were pointed at a crowd of extremely well dressed people. Women in evening gowns adorned with jewelry. Men in sharp looking suits and tuxedos. All of them with the same expression of fear on their faces. Two men worked their way to the front of the crowd. The security workers of the Fountain. They were also sharply dressed. The pirate fired at them without a moment’s hesitation. One of them dropped to the floor with a thud. The other froze.
“I said nobody move,” the pirate growled. He gave them a hard look over before tossing his head back to the ship behind him.
“It’s all clear, Captain Moody!”
With that, a large figure crashed onto the smooth pavement of the Fountain’s docks. An enormously tall woman with hot pink and neon blue hair stood up straight, toting a log that vaguely resembled a club with metal spikes sticking out of it. She towered over the crowd as she looked them over. More security forces rushed out to greet them from inside of the Fountain.
With a single swing of her club, Moody gored several and tossed a whole line of them into the water. More of the crewmates poured down from the boat with huge empty burlap sacks.
“You’re gonna put anything valuable into these bags here, okay?” Moody chirped happily, gesturing all around shyly like a little schoolgirl. “If you don’t...I’ll get so upset!”
“Captain, you want their clothes too? Might be worth a pretty Beri.”
“Oh my! What do I look like?” Moody squeaked innocently. Swinging her club with incredible swiftness, she smacked him on his jaw and sent him flying skyward. “A PERV?!”
“No, you dipshits! Get me pearls! Gold! Silver! Beri! Precious gems!” Moody snapped in a husky, low growl. “Move! NOW!”
Frozen in terror, her men stared at her. The one she’d sent flying earlier crashed down onto the pavement facefirst with a loud wet smack. Spurred into action by the sound, the men scattered into the crowd and began their collection. Some went inside the large glass dome of the Fountain’s theatre.
“Looks kinda stuffy here,” said a new voice from behind Moody.
“Yeah, well, we ain’t here to be entertained. Move your ass…” Moody paused, realizing that she didn’t recognize that voice. She turned to see a red haired woman with her chin resting lightly on the docks. “You’re not one of my idiots…”
“Nope,” Ray replied flatly, hopping up onto the dock. “Definitely not a stupid human.” She flicked her mermaid tail lightly.
“That’s not very nice…” Moody sighed, her whole demeanor shifting once again to being glum. Despite that, her club whipped around with frightening speed to crush this mermaid. Moody wouldn’t kill it. Mermaids were worth their weight in gold! What a score!
Ray dove off the edge just as the club impacted where she’d been, splintering as it cracked against the corner of the dock. Sliding her hands down the spines on her hip, she gathered up her venom and burst out of the water, hurling it at the huge human.
“Venom dart!”
It struck her right in her chest, piercing into her. Good. Ray smiled. This was already half over. Moody didn’t seem to notice it at first, but soon hissed and put her hand over where the venom struck. The burning sensation had already begun. She was a bit of a large human, so it might take more than one to do it. Ray sent a volley of water darts out one after the other.
Moody blocked the majority with her club, hissing a string of profanities. She retreated a bit. Damn fish. If she wanted Moody, she was going to have to come and get her. Then Moody would be the one with the home field advantage. Leaning on her club, she grit her teeth. What had that fish hit her with? She was feeling woozy.
Ray scowled beneath the surface of the waves. Typical human. Hiding on dry land. Well, the seafolk were the superior species. As much as she envied her brothers’ ability to walk on land, she’d get there soon herself. For now, she would just have to improvise. Diving down deep, she prepared herself, gathering more venom on her fingertips. Defeat the captain and the rest would fall into line. Easy.
Dashing up, Ray shot out of the water in an arc. She soared into the sky and descended on the weakened human captain who had only just now noticed her attack. Too little too late. Ray stabbed her fingers into the wound she’d made before, infecting even more venom into this behemoth’s body. The next jabbed into her chest just below the rib cage, targeting the diaphragm. It punctured it easily. Even without her venom sharpening her strikes, this might be enough to kill an ordinary person.
Ray plopped to the ground after her momentum died. Moody’s eyes bulged out of her head as she brought her club up. Dammit! Ray felt a chill go down her spine. Was it not enough?! She’s pumped so much venom into this human! Why wasn’t she going down? Her mobility was limited on land. Maybe she didn’t think this one through all the way. Swiping her hands over her scales, she swiftly readied a desperate volley of water darts. However, as Moody lifted the club into the air, she collapsed backwards and crashed into the pavement. Ray stared at her for a moment, heaving an inward sigh of relief.
“Captain!!”
Moody’s men rushed around, setting Ray back on edge. She fired off water dart after water dart at them, blasting them back as they approached. Yeah. This was easy. Humans were weak. She was fine. Yeah. Ray smirked as the last pirate fell.
A cheer went up amongst the crowd. Ray jerked and tensed as they started to crowd in around her. Dammit! Was she being mobbed? She was low on venom and the water on her scales wasn’t enough to form a water dart. No! She didn’t want to go back! As she was about to panic, several men in black suits interposed themselves between the crowd and her, holding them back. They made an opening for an old hag to walk through. Ray bristled at her approach.
“What do you want?!” She barked.
“To thank you, dear.”
~~~ Three Days Later ~~~
Up on one of the balconies lining the central theatre of the Fountain, Ray sat in a wheelchair with a blanket covering her tail. Beside her, a stooge acted as her butler. One of the security guys. The hag who was apparently the owner of the place assigned him to her. She’d also given Ray special treatment. They had really rolled out the red carpet. Ray wasn’t too sure how to take it. Well, it was only natural that humans served her but it felt a little weird.
When the Marines came by to pick up the pirates, they’d hidden Ray away, but she figured that wouldn’t last too much longer. People talk. It was only a matter of time till someone came looking. She had a bounty on her head after all.
Grabbing another handful of caviar from the tray that her stooge was holding out, she crammed it into her mouth with a sigh. The salty taste was nice. She even enjoyed the crunch of it all. Something about this...whole place made her enjoy it less. Even though she’d taken it as her own in her mind...maybe it was time to do that in reality.
She hated the overwhelming wealth and poshness of the humans here. It wasn’t fair. Back on Fishman Island...in the Fishman District...it was just crap. Crap, crap and more crap. Why? Why did humans get to stand in the light? This was Sabaody all over again. Her grip tightened on the arm of her wheelchair. This...this sucked. It wasn’t fair...
“Dammit…”
