Kyoukichi’s Daily Fortune: Tarot Card Nr. 8 Justice
The majestic scenery of the Pikt Archipelago presented itself in its full magnificence. The island was a symphony of strong, firm rock, a soft carpet of lively green covering the hills and valleys and a net of sparkling blue water which divided the land as it flew through it with soft lulling sounds or crashed down as waterfalls in a mighty roar. Snowclad mountaintops towered over a landscape that hid behind a tender waft of mist like a blushing maid behind a semi-transparent veil. Truly a breathtaking sight for everyone, who was awake this early in the morning as to see it.
All this was completely lost however on the young adult boy who walked around with a sour face and a don’t-come-close-to-me attitude. This was his second time visiting this place and since he had seen the place before the impression seemed lacking and was definitely weaker than last time. Some people said that the view never failed to impress them, even after living on the island for years, but the same was obviously not true for the grumpy pink haired boy. Maybe it was not because of the landscape itself but because he had gotten back with bad news... or rather… with no news – old or new – at all. He had tried, he really had. But there was no information to be found about his wayward sister, even though he had contacted all his sources – consisting solely of Inari the merchant – and read through a stack of newspaper, looking for any unusual happenings that might denounce his sister’s involvement, but to no avail.
With each breath of air Kyou’s exhalation condensed in the cold air in front of him. With clammy hands he adjusted an ugly looking scarf before he pushed them back into the pockets of his coat, trying to keep them as warm as he could. Even in the early hours of morning, the town Falfries on the east end of the Archipelago, had not been sleeping. Fishermen were returning with the first catch of the day and merchants were putting up their market stalls, yet everything seemed to be happening slowly, almost lazily. Falfries was a tranquil place, the big trading business with the outside world happened elsewhere, and people took their time to wake up. It wasn’t that the people slept in, but most of they awoke with a quiet and slow pace that nevertheless held a firm determination to tackle the new day and make the best out of it.
That idyllic way of life was something Kyou approved of, yet you never would be able to tell so from his frowning face. Unlike the scenery which was merely beautiful, the simple looking life of the people here had something appealing, something he longed for deep inside, though he would never have admitted it, not even to himself. Especially not to himself!
“Last time you’ve been here, you ended up sleeping in the streets, with wild cats running all over you and a dog doing his early morning business on your foot.” The boy reminded himself as he left the town, making his way through the Islands wilderness, crossing bridges as he went from one islet to the next. The reason he had come back to Pikt was located outside of Falfries, a good walk away.
Nothing crossed his way this time around, nothing big enough to be dangerous or troublesome at least. There were birds in the trees and bushes, he could hear them sing, but never got as much as a glimpse of them. The ant trail was no problem either as he could simply step over it. No other humans apart from him. This was almost nice.
The rundown dojo came into view and Kyou slowed down his steps. Suddenly he wasn’t sure about coming here anymore. There had been no way to contact Otto beforehand to tell the monkey-man of the planned visit as neither of them owned a Den Den Mushi. The more the boy thought about it, the less likely it seemed to him, that he would be welcome. Both of them had spent only little time together and Kyou’s poor luck had hit the monkey-man as well. On top of that was the failure to find any ounce of information about the missing Blue Gorillas. Kyou stopped dead in his tracks, his head hanging low, feeling all faint with a stomach-churning feeling of panic rising inside him.
The boy turned around and started to walk away. He didn’t even know if Otto was at home. Yeah. Most likely he wasn’t, so knocking at the door would be pointless. What had he been thinking, coming here just like that? What if the Blue Gorillas that were part of Otto’s family were around? Would they remember him? And would that be good or bad? The animals had arms like … well… like Gorillas, strong arms that could do very nasty things to you if you angered them. If-
“OUCH!”
Something in his pocket had bitten him into the finger and he hurriedly retracted his hand from his long gray coat.
“Don’t do that Yuushin. That’s not fair!” He told the turtle in his pocket, his hoarse voice cracking, sounding almost whiny now. “You know I’m not good with those things.”
Yet he stopped and looked back. Uncertain. Almost-
NO!
He had talked that talk with himself before already and he had come to a decision. It was time to stick with it.
He had come all the way and he wouldn’t just go home now.
There was no home to return to anyway.
Slowly and with a lot of effort, he pushed aside his fears and worries and went back to knock on the door.
