Speak of the devil, there he was. Basil turned to check on Syphalia but it seemed the main event had just begun. Basil could only make out so much of the man from this far away, but he was evidently quite large, as was typical of higher marines Basil had noted. He imagined that at some level, the marines equated height with success, which would justify the sizes of the admirals he had read about, but that was a while ago from an old book. He had no idea who the admirals were at this point in time, but it didn’t matter at the moment. Brick looked to have a strong jawline, visible from where Basil was standing and short, graying hair. He also had what looked to be a large pair of red gloves on, so perhaps he was a boxer. Syphalia was a distance away from him, and it looked like he hadn’t noticed Basil yet. It wouldn’t take long though if he stayed with the bodies of these two marines.
He ran across the plaza for a few seconds before hoisting himself back up to the roofs via his tongues. Up here wasn’t the best position, but for now it was safest from the view of the captain. At least, that’s what he hoped. Syphalia seemed the type to solo fights so Basil was less inclined to jump in to assist right off the bat. No, he needed an opening he could take on short notice. He was too far away from the battleground for that.
Two options. He could fire a smoke round, it would provide cover enough for Basil to approach and ensnare the target. But, clumsily applied to Syphalia’s fight, Brick would no doubt realize that Basil was a second player in this game, and the advantage would be reduced significantly. Also, even if he synced up the shot to make it seem like Syphalia had done it, there was a chance she would be put at a horrid disadvantage as well, none moreso than the captain, but a disadvantage nonetheless.
Alternatively, he could charge the fight and take Brick by surprise as planned, though at that point he would be going high-profile. With the distance he had to close, Brick could easily turn during the fight with Syphalia, notice his approach, and take them both on. Surely, Basil’s power could overwhelm the man just as the marines before, but Basil was no gambler. Then again, this was the worst time to merely observe. He had to get closer before figuring out anything substantial and trustworthy. A quick skim verified that the closest he could get to the fight by roof without being seen by the Captain (based on where he was facing at that moment) was a corner building near the execution platform. He would still be too far away to do anything immediately helpful but it was easily a better position than where he was.
As quickly yet quietly as he could, Basil made his way over to the building, a shoe store it looked like, trying to be as obvious as he could to Syphalia but ready to dive beneath the cover on the rooftops, edgings, awnings, corners and the like, just in case Brick decided to turn around or if the fight happened to develop such that Brick was facing him. Of course, fights were fluid, so a better position would become apparent at some point in the fight and Basil would have to reposition himself. With luck, Syphalia would notice him and encourage the fight closer to him where he could strike with stealth and give Syphalia the opportunity to end the fight quickly.
