Created by Vio[/i] are large canines, a little bigger than the Cu Sith, and are known to be just as ferocious, if not more so. They are, however, hairless, but the scaly scutes give them a reptilian appearance.Name of Island
~~~~~
The Pikt Archipelago
Society
~~~~~
A handful of individual clans that are, by outsiders, collectively referred to as the Pikts.
Size of Island
~~~~~Perhaps one of the largest known islands, spanning a greater area than that of the Sabaody Archipelago, if not for the fact that it is divided into many smaller islets.
Location
~~~~~
The most northern reaches of the North Blue.
Log Pose Time and Climatic Type
~~~~~
Not applicable as this island is not on the Grand Line.
Climate
~~~~~Due to its location in the most northerly reaches of the world, the Pikt Archipelago is usually very cold all year round. The mountains are almost always capped with snow, even in the height of summer, while the lowlands suffer rainfall on a regular basis. More common weather conditions include dense fog, heavy rain and snowfall; not to say that the archipelago does not have its fair share of milder days, but the climate can be quite harsh.
Island Appearance
~~~~~When viewed from the horizon, as if one is approaching the island, the Pikt Archipelago appears as a single, immense landmass covered in mountainous terrain. However, upon drawing closer, the observer will notice that the island is not a single mass, but rather a tightly knit assortment of islets of varying shape and size. Richly green all year round, the archipelago possesses a natural beauty that can strip the breath away from any onlooker; often even the miracles of the Grand Line cannot compare to the natural spectacle of this place.
While the vast number of islets can be daunting at first, the natural labyrinth of inland lochs and rivers is much less confusing to an experienced navigator. The natural tides of the massive bodies of water help to steer ships along one of four main routes; reminiscent of the Grand Line itself, but on a far smaller scale. That said, despite the natural guidance that this island offers, it is still possible for ships to get lost within the waters of the archipelago; in colder times of the year, thick fog obscures the details and even more experienced sailors can have difficulty predicting the tidal patterns, doomed to sail in a circle until they find a way out.
On the landmasses themselves, the Pikt Archipelago consists of mostly mountainous terrain; immense hills and peaks tower above the lochs whose waters reach to unforgiving depths, frigid blackness that conceals an unfathomable world. Stretching between the many islets are bridges, both natural and made by the hands of man; narrow pathways of rock and earth, wooden walkways crafted by the inhabitants, even hexagonal pillars of volcanic rock forming causeways between otherwise disjointed islets. As for the rest of the island, most of it is covered in thick forest and rocky, bracken plagued hills.
Flora and Fauna
~~~~~Home to an immensely wide range of plant and animal life, the creatures of the Pikt Archipelago have adapted specifically to the usually cool and moist environment. Small mammals are commonplace, but larger beasts also manage to traverse their territories, bulk concealed by the dense forests and rough landscapes. Fish aplenty dwell in the lochs, making the entirety of the archipelago ideal for fishermen. Arthropods also dwell here, as do fungi and other peculiar plants that thrive in the cooler climes. Amphibians and reptiles are a rare sight amongst the dull and frosty lands; exothermic fauna finding it difficult to survive when their world is constantly in the shadow of mountains and trees, or buried under a blanket of thick fog. Like many an island, the Pikt Archipelago has a lot of unique wildlife; in some cases the creatures that lurk upon the isles would appear more at home on the Grand Line.Piktish PonyWell known and much loved amongst the clans of the archipelago, these short and stocky equines are normally used as pack horses by the people, mainly due to their surprising strength and endurance. Perfectly capable of ambling along highland and lowland terrain alike, these domesticated animals are often rented to travellers for a good price in order to carry supplies.
Piktish FoldA domesticated feline known for its fluffy, monochromatic fur; usually a dark shade of grey or an ivory white. Piktish Folds resemble any normal cat breed when young, but once they reach adulthood their ears fold forwards; curling to give an unusually appealing look to the otherwise 'garden variety' cat. Docile and well-mannered, despite them being commonplace pets, these moggies have a tendency to beg for additional food from the unsuspecting traveller.
Piktish WildcatRoaming the forests of the archipelago, the wildcats are usually grey or ginger tabbies. About a quarter larger than the Piktish Fold, they have thick fur and are very territorial; solitary animals by nature. Few and far between, they have been considered an endangered species by all the people of the archipelago. They have a very deep growl, reminiscent of cats several times their size. Easy to underestimate, even the locals are wary of these opportunistic scavengers; it is not uncommon for explorers to come back with deep claw marks in their legs after having intruded upon the territories of one of these feral felines.
HaggisCuddly balls of fluff, the Haggis are a rather diverse species native, and unique, to the Pikt Archipelago. Known to come in an assortment of different colours, Haggis fur is often found tangled in brambles or snagged on the roots of trees; colours ranging from the purest of whites to the deepest of blacks to the richest of reds. In terms of size, a Haggis can be anything from a small, plum-sized infant to the massive, watermelon-sized ancients. Surviving on an exclusively herbivorous diet, Haggis feast upon fruits and seeds. They have plump, round bodies with triangular ears and small fluffy tails. Social animals, they communicate with loud squeaking and whistling.
AerochMassive and muscular, these deer are known for their surprisingly mild temperament. Aerochs are extremely rare creatures, however; only a handful remaining on the archipelago, spending most of their lengthy lives in the mountains, away from the common people. They are famed for their impressive horns, through which they can channel air to create a majestic and haunting symphony. These performances are thought to be used to communicate with other Aerochs and establish territory; the loud rumbling can be heard clearly several islets away. While usually quite tame, they do appreciate personal space and have been known to mock charge those who get too close.
PuffinsShort and stocky, these sea birds nest in the cliffs of the northern most islets. Shrouding these areas in a cacophony of calls, the Puffins are known for their colourful bills and clumsy flight. However, they exceptional swimmers. They burrow into the dirt, creating small enclaves in which they nest.
Piktish MidgesMinute flying insects that swarm around, they are even more common during light rainfall, thriving in the increased humidity. The bane of animal life, their bites cause blotchy rashes and and itchy, burning sensation in the skin. As a result, the clans started competing to develop medicinal ointments to help treat the bites. To the annoyance of some, there are people who the Midges will not bite, though apparently they love to attack Zoan Devil Fruit users.
Deer WhitebeamOne of the most common types of tree on the archipelago; the Deer Whitebeam is known to split its trunk, forming a 'Y' shape that is reminiscent of the antlers of deer. Lumber from these trees is strong and fair in colouration, but it often requires treatment before it can be used in carpentry.
Piktish ThistlePlants that seem to grow in the most awkward of places, the leaves of these 'weeds' are prickly and their stems covered with sharp hairs. As a result, they tear holes in clothing and sting the flesh. Fortunately, they are not poisonous in any way, but that does not stop their sharp needles from aggravating even the hardiest of people. When boiled, these plants can actually be used for medicinal purposes. A lot of larger herbivores feed on them, capable of ignoring their prickly nature.
Mountain LavenderWidely spread, this beautiful flower has deep purple petals which add to the majesty of the Piktish Archipelago. The soothing scent is strongest on warmer, windy days. The people even sell lavender scented merchandise such as soaps to travellers.
The Loch KingConsidered a myth by many, the Loch King is a rarely seen and heavily disputed monster that dwells in the labyrinthine depths of the archipelago's water bodies. Biologists from across the world have searched for this beast, but to no avail. In reality, it is a particular form of Sea King.
Piktish BearThese ferocious animals were one of the few predators of the Aeroch, but they were also one of the first beasts to be tamed by man. Now, very few of these animals exist in the wilderness, with a decent sized population being maintained by the Buchanan Clan, who use them as mounts for their police forces. The bears themselves are known for their black fur with traces of a rich red. Their snouts are quite short.
ChickcharneyLarge owls who lack the power of flight. Standing a little over a meter in height, the Chickcharney are the main predator of Haggis. Despite their inability to fly, they are excellent climbers, nesting high in the trees and in the mountains. They are very nimble and light footed, a great contrast to their bulk, and have keen vision and hearing. Attacks on humans have been reported, striking with powerful kicks.
Blue FalconA rare bird of prey native to the Pikt Archipelago, the Blue Falcon is known both for its ferocity and for its royal blue plumage. An impressive avian, they are said to be as rare as, if not rarer than, the Aeroch. One is currently owned by the head of the Buchanan Clan, but a small number have been seen in the wild. They are said to represent strength and wisdom.
Silver Oak & Golden OakRare trees whose names stem from the unusual metallic compounds in their bark that make them sparkle like silver or gold. Due to their rarity, felling them without permission is considered a crime. The Buchanan Clan use them in fine furniture and shipbuilding.
Cu SithLarge black wild dogs that roam the mountains, hunting in small packs of two or three. It is thought that they were responsible for the sudden drop in Aeroch population, but evidence of these beasts is very hard to come by. Recently they have become more opportunistic hunters, scavenging food and even eating bones, leaving little behind, but resorting to hunting techniques when pressured. They have shaggy, matted fur.
Piper PitchersA carnivorous plant that preys upon flying insects and, when it grows larger, even small birds. It uses an alluring strong nectar to bait its prey into on of the tube-like mouths, which then closes on the victim. The victim is then trapped and slips into its stomach sac, a specially designed stem, to be digested. Their name comes from their resemblance to a set of bagpipes.
Highland TerrierThese little dogs are common pets amongst the people of the archipelago, coming in black and white varieties. However, despite their cute appearance and popularity, their incessant yapping tends to drive people up the wall. Sometimes they act very territorial, but otherwise they are quite friendly, if a little demanding.
Chestnut HedgehogA small species of Hedgehog that uses a symbiotic moss to give itself a green look for camouflage. When rolled up, they greatly resemble a notorious plant that also grows on the archipelago. Because of said plant's infamy amongst people and animals, the Chestnut Hedgehog has become an excellent survivor, even with predators such as the Chickcharney and Cu Sith.
Ironspike ChestnutWhile the tree itself is relatively common and unimpressive, and actually grows more like a shrub that a tree, it is the nuts they produce which have earned the fame. The nuts themselves are encased in a green, spike-laden shell which can easily grow to the size of a baseball. The shell starts off quite soft, but when the nut ripens the shell becomes much harder. The nuts themselves have been used as weapons by the people of the archipelago because of how similar they are to a cannon ball. If heated extensively, the nuts explode, packing quite a powerful punch.
Screaming ToadA medium-sized amphibian found nesting in the shallows of many of the lochs, they are notorious for their high-pitched squealing. Aside from their irritating screams, these toads are harmless, feeding on small insects and on occasion, small rodents.
Piktish Highland CattleFarmed extensively by the Buchanan Clan, these cattle are covered in a shaggy hide of thick, red-brown hair. They are farmed for two main reasons, the first being their milk production and for the richly flavoured meat. Secondly, their hides and hair are used in a variety of textile products. Even the males are quite placid, despite their impressive horns.
McLeod's HornetFound near the McLeod Clan's settlements, these are not actually hornets, but a large type of honey bee. Much like their namesake, they are noisy and bright yellow, but they are also quite aggressive. Their hives are generally very complex, wrapping around trees. They are valued for their sweet honey, but less so for their burning stings.
Crystal DeerFound in the snowy northern mountains and forests of the archipelago, this rare creature is said to be just a fairy tale. The fact is, they do exist, but are so rare that they have long thought to be extinct. They have blue-white hair with dark brown markings on their backs that resemble bare branches from a distance. Their spectacular antlers are brown, but have white marks on them that look like snow. If you ever do encounter one, be watchful, they are very timid and well camouflaged.
Loch SealThese friendly mammals of the water can often be found sunbathing on the rocky islets of the many inland lochs. Grey in colour, they often have dark blotchy patterns on them and have even been likened to miniature Sea Cows. They feed mostly on fish, which is probably why the vast majority of their population live around the south-western islands. They are generally very tame, but have also been known to steal fish when left unguarded.
Piktish SquirrelThese small mammals have long and fluffy tails, foraging for seeds and fruits and nuts which they store away in tree hollows. They are very agile and surprisingly difficult to spot. They usually become prey to the Piktish Wildcat or the Chickcharney, however. For the most part, these rodents have fiery red fur with ash grey limbs, but in the colder northern islets of the archipelago, they take on a different colour scheme; purest white with chocolate brown.
Silver Mountain FoxOpportunistic animals, these animals have long and lithe bodies covered in grey-white fur and are sparsely marked with small black patches. Found almost exclusively in the northern islets of the archipelago, these mammals spend most of their time in the mountains, searching for bird nests in order to steal the eggs for food. They are eerily silent, but seeing one is considered good luck by hikers.
Black AdderA medium sized snake that spends the vast majority of its life buried beneath the soil, hiding amongst the dark tree roots thanks to its jet black colouring. It feeds on small mice and insects, but it is not venomous in the least bit. Of course, that does not stop it from nipping at the ankles of hikers who come close to treading on it. They are generally found in the southernmost islands.
Piktish BeaverOnce thought to be extinct, this massive rodent has suddenly made a massive comeback, though feelings about this sudden incline have been mixed. Some are happy, others annoyed. The reason? These animals are big, gnawing down trees and sometimes even the woodwork of bridges, using them to make nests which block the natural flow of the loch currents. They are a nuisance, to be sure.
Stone HidesAnimals found in and around the Crystal Floor Ruins, these beasts are often ferocious, but their most spectacular development is the mineralised bone scutes that protect their bodies, giving them a statuesque appearance.
Gargoyles are massive bats, around the size of a small bear. Unfortunately, despite their ferocity, they are also flightless due to their weight. They are excellent climbers, however, easily crawling across the ceilings and walls of the ruins.
Bandersnatches are somewhat ape-like creatures with small hind legs and massive, scute-covered forelimbs. They are few and far between, but one should not cross these beasts. They can walk on their hind legs, albeit very slowly, but on all fours they are unnervingly fast.
Urnweavers are large spiders with hard, mineralised exoskeletons. They are often found in the Crystal Floor Ruins, where they make nests that resemble clay pots. They are mildly venomous.[/ul][/div][/spoiler]
Inhabitants
~~~~~
The people of the Pikt Archipelago are just normal humans, divided into five particular tribes, as detailed below. While they all share traditions and customs, they are somewhat divided by political disputes. There is also said to be a small population of mermaids in Loch Merrow, formed from refugees who have escaped slavery. Because of the fine balance between being part of the World Government and being an individual land, the mermaids live in relative sanctity, kept secret by those who know of them.
Prominent Organizations, Groups and Establishments
~~~~~
Clan McDonald
This clan's territories are the south-westernmost islets of the archipelago. They are known for their fishing skills, being the most coastal clan, and specialise in the fish market when trading with foreigners. Their tartan is dark green and blue, with red and white. They are aligned with the World Government, but tend to overlook pirates unless they cause trouble. The fishermen of this clan could be compared to the shipwrights of Water Seven in terms of their fighting skill, putting some of the saltiest seadogs to shame.
Clan McKay
Known for their deep blue and black tartan, marked with red, the McKay clan control the densely wooded islets of the south-east, specialising in shipbuilding and woodwork. It was this clan's efforts that constructed the wooden paths connecting many of the islets, now known as the McKay Walkways. Additionally, the McKay clan is very industrial, supplying the rest of the clans with lumber and quarried stone, albeit for ridiculous fees. They are very open, even to revolutionaries, but because of their monopoly on construction, the other clans tolerate their attitudes.
Clan McLeod
This clan's tartan is a vivid yellow and black, with red. Though they are the smallest of all the clans, they have control over the smaller islets to the east of the archipelago. They appreciate sound and silence, but tend to be a rather loud clan. They have continually rejected allegiances from all major political parties and rarely, if ever, get involved in the struggles of the other clans. This does not mean they aren't skilled fighters, practicing a refined martial art that seems more like a river dance.
Clan McPherson
The McPherson clan rule over the northernmost regions of the archipelago, living in the cold wintry mountains. Their tartan is black and white, with red and yellow. Known for their hunting skills, the McPherson clan make a living off animal pelts and meat and members of this clan are taught never to waste any materials that could be used. They're not adverse to hunting pirates for the bounties, but aren't particularly aligned with the World Government.
Clan Buchanan
The strongest of the five clans, distinguished by their red and white target with black, the Buchanan control the central islands of the Pikt Archipelago. Because of their position, they house the original castle of the Royal Family in which their clan leader now resides. Because of their position, they have the greatest impact on the politics of the archipelago, having the best farmland and livestock upon which the other clans depend, giving them an immense degree of power. This is coupled with their link with the World Government, housing a small Marine base.
Bear Cavalry
Led by Lewis Beck, the Bear Cavalry are the main police and military force of the Buchanan Clan, keeping the capital of Piktopia, as well as surrounding areas, well policed. Indeed, it can be very intimidating when your opponent is riding a large bear into battle as opposed to a horse. The cavalrymen and women wield flails for mounted combat, but also use bolas to snare running targets. Even the marines serving on the archipelago fear them.
Fort Connery
A medium scale marine base, Fort Connery has become somewhat of a hindrance to some clans, but a help to others. Located on one of the central islands, close to Piktopia, this fortress has its uses and has definitely helped to keep the potential civil war from breaking out. Around a thousand marines are stationed here, but they are usually only required at sea as land based issues are normally stopped by the Bear Cavalry.
Druids of Ciocal
A occult group who worship the old ways of the archipelago, their identities are kept secret, though it is said they have eyes and ears all across the land. They usually wear black robes and masks with curved horns in order to protect their identities, though they are considered criminals by the law enforcement due to their ways. Unfortunately, they are ever elusive. They are not above sacrificing animals for their cause.
Trends
~~~~~
Fashion
Tartans are the traditional colours of the clans of the Pikt Archipelago. Clan leaders and noblepersons wear these colours to show their position, while others wear it to show their allegiance to their clan. Five main types of Tartan exist, shown in garments such as coats, kilts, hats and scarves.
Kilts are a form of skirt worn by both the men and women of the Pikt Archipelago, usually boasting the Tartan colours of their clan. Normally pleated, these traditional garments are usually only worn by clan leaders and nobles, as well as other higher ranking individuals.
Tam O' Shanters are a form of brimless bonnet, similar to a beret, worn as the traditional headdress of clan members. While normal coloured ones are commonplace, nobles and the like may wear Tartan ones. The Tam O' Shanter - commonly abbreviated to Tammy - is distinguished by the pom-pom in the centre.
Politics
Political tension is high in this archipelago, with the five clans only just managing to keep each other in check. Supply and demand seems to overtake political conflicts when resources become strained. The presence of a Marine base also seems to keep the Pikt residents in check, though that probably has something to do with the Buchanan clan, who rule over the archipelago thanks to their geographical location, agricultural advantages and their ties with the World Government.
Politically speaking, each clan is run by a Head and a council of nobles who vote democratically on what kind of events take place amongst their people. With these decisions made, the Clan Heads then host quarter-annual meetings to debate on supply issues and the like. This system has run for many years and has been relatively effective, though tensions still rise. Annual games are also held to help keep the risk of violence down, allowing the angst of the people to be depleted in competitive sports rather than in direct conflict.
Industry
In terms of the archipelago's industrial levels, the clans specialise in different markets, trading amongst each other to keep a relatively stable economy. Hunting, fishing, woodwork and farming tend to be the most active industries, though the McLeod's are known for their fine music and even finer ales. Lavender scented candles and such are also a popular gift for tourists.
Cuisine
Meat and fish dishes are the main thing here, but ales are also a speciality. For those who can get a hold of it, the sweet honey of the McLeod's Hornet is one of the most treasured additions to a good meal. Any roasted meat glazed with this sweet nectar is sure to have a flavour worthy of the Gods themselves. One can also get some pretty fine cheeses here.
NPCs
~~~~~
Hamish Buchanan
Current head of the Buchanan Clan, he is a giant of a man who is as strong mentally as he is physically. He rules harshly in order to maintain the peace, knowing that a rebellion could be just around the corner. He owns a rare Blue Falcon. An excellent politician as well as a proud warrior, Hamish has kept the land united through all forms of turmoil, though some believe he has ulterior motives. He wields a massive sword known as Claiomh Solais, but has very rarely needed to use it.
Lewis Beck
A comrade of Hamish Buchanan and honorary member of the Buchanan Clan, Lewis is the Captain of the Bear Cavalry and is known for being both a warm and welcoming man, but a true demon on the battlefield. He wields a barbed spear known as Gáe Bulg, which he always washes clean after every battle.
Rupert McPherson
Clan head of the McPherson, Rupert is a man of tall stature and bulky build, with a mane of rich red hair. He is a ferocious man who enjoys good ale, happily wrestling against wild animals, which explains his scarred appearance. He has gained the unusual epithet of "Rupert the Bear," due to his nature and apparent disregard for pain (induced by alcohol).
Graham McLeod
Lithe and legendary, Graham is the head of the McLeod Clan and is currently regarded as the best musician in the entire archipelago. However, his exposure to noise has rendered the bald, blond-bearded man practically deaf, though that doesn't affect his musical prowess.
Pete McKay
A humorous man with short, dark brown hair; he is the head of the McKay Clan and one of the best shipwrights on the archipelago, having participated in the construction of the entire fishing fleet used by the McDonald Clan. He is quite greedy, however, and demands high prices for the timber and stone that his clan produce.
Craig McDonald
The eldest clan head of the archipelago and head of the McDonald Clan, Craig is a grey-haired man with a long beard. An expert fisherman, he still captains his fishing vessel, despite both being rather old. However, age is no obstacle and he's as fit as a fiddle, putting the younger generations to shame by never failing to bring in the best catches.
Settlements
~~~~~
Piktopia
The capital of the Pikt Archipelago, Piktopia is a fortified citadel protected by stone walls around the perimeter, surrounded by farmlands. Currently ruled by the Buchanan Clan, Piktopia is governed heavily, making it a very secure place. The structures of the citadel consist of paved paths, stairways and raised walkways, criss-crossing around. The centre is where the castle itself lies.
Glasenburgh
A medium sized port town located on the south western coast of the archipelago, Glasenburgh is run by the McDonald Clan. Many fishing vessels can be found docked here, and a market is held once a week, making this a very busy place. Marine vessels may also dock here, but not too often. There are also a lot of taverns and inns for locals and visitors alike.
Abundeen
A large town located in the south east, it is surrounded mostly by dense woodland and is home to the McKay Clan. A haven for shipwrights, Abundeen has a particular abundance of fine lumber and effectively has its own natural dry docks thanks to the peculiar tides of Loch Lomorar. The waters can stay out for days at a time before finally surging back in, giving plenty of time for shipbuilders to prepare.
Ayrness
This small town is located in the northern reaches of the archipelago, up in the mountainous terrain. Ayrness is run by the McPherson Clan and watches over Loch Shiess, to the south. The multiple levels of this town are a result of the steep terrain upon which it was built, and because of the altitudes it is often subjected to varying levels of snowfall all year round. This is a great place to purchase weapons and pelts, however.
Falfries
Home of the McLeod Clan, this eastern town is perhaps the smallest of the major settlements of the Pikt Archipelago. Built on an island, the town is surprisingly spacious and its populace quite small. However, it is a tranquil and idyllic place where music and dance is always on the go, almost as if entertainment were militaristic. Thanks to it being so secluded, not many visitors come here.
Other Places of Interest
~~~~~
The Depths of Loch Merrow
Of the three largest lochs of the Pikt Archipelago, Loch Merrow is said to be the largest in terms of depth. Rumour has it that there are several caves hidden within the unfathomable depths, alongside the wrecks of sunken ships. Down here, a small refuge for mermaids who have managed to escape slavery has formed, but few know of the place, and those that do are sworn to secrecy by the McLeod Clan. Loch Merrow is located north west of Falfries and is surrounded by mountains on all sides. There are three entrances from neighbouring lochs and rivers, but only one exit. Sometimes, when the tides change, the southernmost currents change direction and before another exit for vessels traversing that area of Loch Merrow.
Ri Linn
An immense waterfall, this legendary cascade is located in a ravine between two mountains, and the river beneath is crossed by a suspension bridge. The fearsome flow of this fall is said to be responsible for the natural currents of the inland lochs, though some doubt that a single water source could produce such an effect. The steep cliffs down which it pours are practically impossible to climb, not just because of their steepness, but also because of the dampness and mosses that grow upon the rocks. Those that drink water straight from the cascade are said to be worthy heirs of their own kingdom.
Piper's Cave
This interesting cave was formed from pillars of volcanic rock, making a natural islet that connects to one of the basalt bridges. It is so called because of the glorious echoes that it makes when sounds are produced inside, the melodies are haunting and really stir up the soul. It is located in one of the smaller lochs south of Loch Merrow, though is is very small and does not really contain much.
Crystal Floor Ruins
Hidden in one of the tallest mountains is a large and labyrinthine structure said to have been created during the Void Century, though such information is merely speculation. The ruins span several levels within the mountain, the walls carved from the rock in a fashion that defies nature, though perhaps the most interesting of facts is that each room has a floor made of crystalline glass, thick enough resist immense weights and pressures, yet thin enough to see through. There are often strange carvings on the underside of these floors; the carvings themselves are a complicated map system that reveals the layout of the dungeon. The passages between rooms are simply carved from rock, with a paved floor and stairways, though many lead to dead ends.

The Piktish Guide to Wildlife
Mission #PA1
The Pikt Archipelago is home to several strange and wonderful species, but the issue is that some of them are endangered! Worried about the sake of the archipelago's ecosystem, the Clan Council have commissioned your group to find evidence of three of the island's rarest creatures; the Piktish Wildcat, the Blue Falcon, and the Aeroch. Just be careful, there are poachers and other ferocious animals lurking in the forests!
Island History
~~~~~
Natural History
The Pikt Archipelago was, many thousands of years ago, a single landmass. However, as sea levels rose, the mountainous terrain of the island was flooded, dividing the once massive island into a series of several smaller ones. During the island's creation, volcanic activity created large formations of rock which cracked as they cooled, forming hexagonal pillars. These pillars now form natural causeways between the islets, as well as caverns and natural walls. Because of its rough terrain, the Piktish Archipelago is relatively unsuitable for farming in most areas, allowing it to keep its rural format and untamed wilderness; mountains, lochs and woodland.
Human History
A few hundred years back, travellers, supposedly pirates, from other lands set foot on the archipelago, claiming it as their own. For a while, the new settlers lived quite peacefully, but soon tensions rose between them due to conflicting opinions. Eventually, the entire island erupted in all out civil war, much to the dismay of the currently anointed king, dividing the people into five major clans.
At first, the war seemed without end, until the Buchanan clan made its claim, committing high treason and taking control of the kingdom's greatest resource: farmland. Due to this move, the Buchanan clan were able to quell the rebellions and, since then, have kept the rest of the clans in relative peace. Tensions still run quite high, however, but the iron rule of the Buchanan and the assistance of the World Government has held the archipelago together.
