Name of Island: Jaya
Size of Island: Small
Location: Grandline; ‘Strawhat Route’
Log Pose Time: Four Days
Flora and Fauna: Jaya is a Spring Island, littered with forest. The most densely packed forestry region is known as South Grove and resides on the Eastern, sparsely populated half of the Island. The forests are home to all sorts of creepy-crawlies, including rare (and apparently) collectable Stag Beetles and Giant Centipedes. More worryingly these insects seem unusually hostile to those who would invade their habitat, acting in an almost deliberately malicious way. This is due to the Island’s most unique residents, the cunning South-Birds. The South-Birds make for exceptionally useful navigation tools, as their heads always point in a southerly direction. They however are not so easy to apprehend, the distinctive cry of the South-Bird seems to enable it control over the insects they share the forest with, making for quite a good defence against potential kidnappers.
Map:
Inhabitants: “The way pirates spend money is like spilling water, even though they see killing and fight as an "everyday thing" they rarely attack the citizens. After all, what good is money if there is nowhere to spend it at?” – A local barkeep.
The majority of the inhabitants live on the western half of the Island. The economy and therefore people’s livelihood on the Island is founded upon pirating, that is accommodating pirates. As such the locals aren’t your run of the mill citizens. They are resilient and enterprising with enough street-smarts to know how to avoid the many frequent confrontations that happen between the visiting ‘clients’. The fact is attacks on the civilians here are fairly rare, and the locals are more than accommodating to all but the foulest seafarers and even then, they aren’t immune to a little intimidation. The Islander’s are also prone to judging pirates by their bounties, which has led in some cases for visitors forging for themselves fake bounties, a sometimes rewarding but also risky strategy. Those with bounties exceeding the norm, (approximately 10-20 million) are often treated with higher respect and fear, and given an almost celebrity status. The downside of course, is drawing the attention of other buccaneers.
NPCS:
Spector is a local businessman who runs the most lavish of the hotels in Mock Town, ‘Tropical Hotel.’ He is obviously a competent businessman, but also seems prone to threats, becoming pleading and flattering when he perceives himself in danger. However he is also shrewd and charges steeply for his accommodations.
Town(s)/Village(s)/City or Cities: The only major town on the Island is known as ‘Mock Town’. It takes on the appearance of a resort, with its well-kept wooden buildings and sunny beach-side accommodation. Most notably of these is Spector’s Tropical Hotel, a paradise hotel literally built atop the ocean. The structure is supported by stilts, raised wooden platforms connecting the sizable, two-story hotel. The first story built out of stone, supported by the wood beneath. Other notable establishments are traditional looking, rowdy pubs and even sizable gambling houses taking up multiple stories. There are also stores that provide supplies that pirates may need, gunpowder, swords, log-poses – whatever your pirating need, Mock Town citizens will try and capitalise.
Island History: The original Island dwellers of Jaya were the Shandians, that was four hundred years ago. At this time the entire Island bore a remarkable resemblance to a skull and the Shandian’s guarded their spectacular City of Gold and mysterious Poneglyph.
The Island was discovered by Noland Montblanc, this knowledge is considered a North Blue fairytale. On discovering the City of Gold he later told the king (the king of his hometown Lvneel.) of his expeditions. The king demanded to be taken to the City of Gold, but upon returning it had vanished and Noland was falsely sentenced to death under the charge of lying to his King. Until this day he is known historically for being a liar.
The Strawhat Pirates however were able to prove the truth of Noland’s words and had discovered that the City of Gold, along with the majority of Jaya had been blasted into the sky by a freak burst from the Knock-up Stream. It has resided in the sky Island of Upper Yard ever since. The Jaya people know today is what used to make up the mouth of the skull, which shows where the Island was split. This information however, is largely unknown or considered fable.
Since then the Island has established itself as a haven for pirates, offering reprieve from the constant hostility that World Government Islands and ‘normal’ citizens would normally offer them. However they cannot offer them reprieve from each other. Thriving off piracy gives this Island an interesting dynamic and culture. More recently the Philosophy of Shichibukai Doflamingo was brought to the island via a pirate named Bellamy. Bellamy preached about the ‘New Age’, one where the old ideals of Piracy were stripped of all romanticism, regarding dreams as foolish. It is apparent he intended to recruit those he deemed strong to this ‘New Age’ but after being defeated by Luffy, was killed by Doflamingo for ‘tarnishing his symbol’. Whether this is because he perverted what Doflamingo stands for, or simply because his weakness reflected poorly on the Shichibukai is unclear. Although Doflamingo did suggest that opposing ideologies weren’t important, what was important was to use that conflict to your advantage and to ‘subdue them’. Whether or not with Bellamy dead, Doflamingo’s influence in this area has faded entirely is uncertain. What is certain is the Island maintains its reputation as a pirate haven.
