The fight between Lance and Tomas versus the pirates wasn't nearly as epic of a battle as the ones he had taken place in before during this entire chaotic situation but it certainly was the hardest. The reason why could be easily explained with how Lance was suffering from fatigue while also trying to keep pirates from outright attacking Tomas since he was injured badly and couldn't hold his own. So while some attacked Tomas, Lance tried to push others back from him and to also strike out at the two barraging him. It was a difficult task because he couldn't do much but try to kick at their legs as he tried to protect himself from his own enemies which were throwing punches, swiping at him with more scalpels and just overall being royal pests.
Lance kicked out and took out the last pirate that he was facing, sending the man flying back into a wall. His head struck it, his eyes went wonky and then the man passed out. Breathing a sigh of relief, the Warrant Officer went to turn and help out Tomas. He hadn't realized how much of a huge distance he had ended up putting in between them either as he had taken out the last pirate so he started to rush over. Why he was trying so hard to protect the man, he didn't know. Clearly, he had crimes against him a lot of which he had read quickly in the man's file. But at the same time, he seemed like he was really working to redeem himself here on this ship and had taken a lot of bodily injuries to do so which could have even been fatal. So Lance felt obligated.
But it was a good thing that his feelings of obligation hadn't kept him standing right near Tomas's attackers for suddenly the ceiling above them caved in and two men came crashing down on top of the two assailants effectively crushing them into the ground. The man on top of the second had white hair, a stern face and more than one cigar sticking out of the corner of his mouth with smoke emanating from them. The second man was pinned underneath of the weapon that he held and looked like he had absolutely seen better days. The white haired man pronounced the defeated one arrested and things became clear that the Marine had been the one to win the battle. By the looks of things, not just any Marine either.
A woman with short black hair came through the hole in the ceiling a moment later holding swords in her hands. Lance found himself swallowing hard and hoping that he wasn't mistaken for a pirate like last time. He took a bit of a sidestep away from her as she rushed past without noticing him, and breathed a sigh of relief. As Tashigi spoke to the man with white hair and incredibly strong build, she told him good job... Commodore!? This man was that high up the chain of command?
"Freaking, you're kidding me right?" Lance thought to himself before he tried to straighten up his clothes and look presentable as a Marine officer. In reality he had soot all over his clothes, rips in his shirt and probably was still kinda damp from his earlier laps in the ocean. Well, not that anyone probably looked good after the major battle that they had just had.
Tomas was back to leaning against a radiator in the room but he weakly managed to call out to the Commodore. Lance then learned the man's name. Smoker? Wasn't that the guy that used to run the Marine base in Roguetown? Lance had heard a lot of crazy stories about the man and how tough he and his crew was. But he was right there, in the flesh? In the West Blue of all places? Lance would have suspected that he would be off in the Grand Line having far more glorious battles than anything that could happen here in the Blues.
Torn away from his thoughts by a shout, Lance looked over and waved to a Marine. He thought he recognized him from somewhere perhaps? Maybe in the heat of the battle he had seen him at one point but he couldn't be sure. The Marine proceed to talk to his Commander, Smoker. Everyone seemed to be looking to him at the moment. Which made sense, of course.
Tomas also addressed Smoker, introducing himself but then almost immediately after speaking actually fell over onto the floor.
Rushing over, the Marine officer helped to prop him back up if he would let him and tried to take a look at his wounds to see where he was losing the most blood.
"This man definitely needs medical attention, ASAP," Lance said fairly loudly, not wanting Tomas' condition to go unnoticed. "He was in the middle of the blast down in the Engineering room since he was the one that managed to rig it. I'm not sure how much internal bleeding he has."
Lance realized he hadn't actually introduced who he was and quickly added on, "Ah, s-sorry. Lance Hains, Warrant Officer, at your service, Commodore Smoker." He had turned to quickly face the Commodore while still bending down on his knees to help Tomas. A hand went up to salute the man quickly.
