Tanako was suddenly pushed away and the girl fell on the deck like a child pushed down on the playground. She stared at Magnus with a look of hurt and disappointment reflecting in her eyes that he would think such a thing of her - or that her attempt to get a quick meal was abruptly ruined.
Her lips parted as she took a breath, but before she could say anything in response, Magnus was back up on his feet and addressed Samson. Tanako’s mouth closed as she turned to look at Samson and she froze when she witnessed his behaviour. He was terrified of revealing her secret - or was he terrified of her? It broke her heart to think that it could be the latter, but if what he said was true, she really needed him to keep his mouth shut about her devil fruit abilities.
Tilting her head as she stared at Samson, she lowered herself as close to the deck as she could, on all fours, and stretched her wings out while Magnus had his back turned to her. Allowing her wings to flutter, her body was only driven further into the wooden boards, her gaze was fixed on Samson as she moved one finger over her lips and the tip of her nose to signal for him to remain silent. This was meant to serve as some sort of reminder that her secret needed to remain exactly that - a secret. However, she wasn’t quite sure if it came across as such a gentle gesture or a threat. Before Magnus would turn around again, her wings were tucked away, perfectly concealed beneath her hair once more and her posture resumed something of a normal stance.
Like a picture-perfect scene, Tanako was suddenly sitting on her ankles, her hands in her lap and her back straight while her head was bowed, the mop of hair covering her face.
She thought about watching Magnus tackle the beast, but it was already established that she and Samson were not very useful today. So, instead, she remained seated as she was, completely still… until her head turned to watch Samson. Then one hand left her lap and was pressed onto the deck, and then the other as she began to crawl toward Samson. “Oh, Samson…” she gently sang before reaching him and gently placing her long thin fingers on his knees. The boat rocked terribly as the animal crashed into the side of the ship, causing the woman to tighten her grip on Samson’s knees so as to prevent them from being separated. “Please don’t be afraid of me or for me…” her voice rang softly, devastated to see that she was causing the young lad such terror. Their barbecue suddenly seemed less important.
“We just need to keep a little secret. Can you do that? Why don’t you tell me something about yourself that I have to keep secret? That way, we’ll both be playing the same game together.” She offered with a kind smile beneath her hair.
However, this was when Magnus resurfaced, and as she heard the water splutter from his mouth after the splash, Tanako was instantly reminded of two things - firstly, their friend was fighting for their lunch, and possibly for his life; and secondly, she was very hungry, and that sea boar probably tasted amazing on the grill. Suddenly rising to her feet, Tanako made her way to the taffrail. The boat was still swaying from side to side, and she held her arms out in an attempt to steady herself as her legs took her in a zigzag path to the rail.
There, she looked at Magnus, sitting on the defeated animal that was now floating on the water’s surface, while he complained about them. Her gaze lowered to her feet as she recalled the last time she stood here was when she offered him a rope - and it got swallowed by the ocean. She raised her head to look at Magnus again, clutching onto the wooden frame to keep herself steady.
“So… you don’t need a rope, right?”
