Danica #8
“Uhh… I don’t remember the name,” Danica replied as Clara quizzed her on her maternity’s origins, forefinger and thumb stroking her chin as she pried at memories. “A small town about half a mile in from the coast, I think? She didn’t say that much about it,” she answered, reaching an unfortunate dead end in her knowledge. It was true that her mother had taken to the nomadic life like a duck took to water, so it was no small leap in logic to think that she wanted an out from what otherwise sounded like a rather mundane place of living.
“He’s my brother,” Clara explained. Miss Halley listened, her eyes switching focus from the brilliant blonde as she spoke of her objective to the sprawling views of Yeste. It wasn’t easy to see from the level of the coast or valleys, but their ascent gradually revealed more and more of the island’s layout from upon high. Sure, the port was the most densely populated area, but even now she could see distant protrusions of rooftops and the telltale uniformity of man-made country roads all about, breaking the green of the valleys.
“Like a shipbuilder, or house construction?” Woodworkers came in many flavours, some dabbled in a bit of everything, while others specialised. This she knew well, if only from past blunders. Her people travelling across the waves had many skilled carpenters in their ranks, forever repeating the cycle of tending to the vessels that carried them from place to place — if not the construction of entirely new craft for families to occupy. “If he’s talented, I bet he could build a nice cosy home, sí~?” she smiled.
“Maybe when I’m older and have seen more of the world, I’ll try and settle down, too,” she commented, hopping up a partly natural, partly carved set of steps in the mountain’s rock, where she waited for Clara to catch up. “I just can’t see myself staying in one place for too long, ja? It’s in my blood to keep moving!” How odd a statement it was that it applied to her twofold, tapping into a deeper concern she held in her heart, yet smiled her way through it…{Post Synposis:—}
Danica and Clara continue their conversations as the former considers deeper thoughts about family, society, and personal fears.
