Gabriel #16

The Professor sighed for himself, looking at the paints that were decorating the corridor, which was closed off by a heavy stone door after several meters. Was the key to their opening in the art around them? It was possible, but if it was some kind of puzzle, Gabriel couldn't see the solution right away.

"You know…"

He muttered while looking at the paintings

"You are a very beautiful girl and from what I can see also a good person, but it won't do you much good if you won't mind your manners. I mean look at us right now."

He took one of these paintings from its place and put it back almost immediately.

"I know that you are a treasure hunter and that you are planning to steal and sell the amulet. Yet I am still helping you because I believe that you are a genuinely good person who really needs that money."

He didn't add the part where he was planning to send some people to retrieve it afterward.

"But how am I supposed to trust you now, when you are threatening me after I saved you from that spider? I mean a simple thank you would take you a long way…”

He paused, taking another painting, before smiling victoriously.

“But of course…they are in the wrong order, chronologically they should be like this…”

For another few minutes the Professor was running back and forth through the corridor, switching the position of different paintings, until he finally put down the last one. As the frame got to its place a silent clicking sound echoed through the place, followed by a loud rumbling announcing that the doors leading to the next chamber finally opened.

“Not to mention…”

Gabriel continued

“I am a real gentleman. I would never betray you like that. After you…”

He gestured towards the doors.

As Professor Moon spoke, Danielle’s gaze fell on him and followed his movements. Watching him so focussed on the paintings, she couldn't help but notice he looked like such a nerd - a true historian. His profession was extremely fitting for such an individual, but she supposed that would be the reason he has such a profession in the first place. That said, however, it was a nice thing to see anyone have passion for something, and it brought a smile to her face.

Her smile was soon replaced with a frown when she processed his words. Allowing him to go on uninterrupted, her frown grew, her red eye fixed on him with intent. Of course he knew. It was obvious from the start... but perhaps I will save my gratitude for after I leave this place with the amulet in my possession, she thought to herself with scepticism of this man’s kindness, despite it having been shown so far in abundance. Saved me from that spider? Saved me!? What does he think I am, some damsel in distress in need of rescuing? Her blood was beginning to boil as she abhorred such a notion. She was afraid of the spider, it was true... but if he hadn’t blocked the passage way, she could have found some other way to get around.

As the doors suddenly rolled open, Danielle’s features softened, but her jaw remained clenched. Turning to the door, she peered inside, then she looked at Gabriel with her arms firmly crossed and not a hint of amusement on her face.

She scoffed lightly and looked away as she knew he had a point but cared not to admit it. “Thank you.” she replied, her tone genuine, but she did not linger to make eye contact with him as she simply entered the next chamber. It only took her a few steps before she began to move faster and was soon running to a pedestal in the centre of the room, taken over with sheer eagerness to get her hands on what lay on top of it - The Amulet of Fah’Ruk.

“This is it. We got it! I can’t believe we got it!” she turned to grin at Gabriel, perhaps the widest grin she's shown him since the moment they met, as her jaw finally unlocked with joy on her face. Without thinking, she turned back to the golden trinket and snatched it off its stand, staring at it and trying to estimate... how many hundreds of thousands will it sell for?

Gabriel #17

A really unexpected thing happened. After placing the last painting in its right place, the doors leading to the main chamber opened and Danielle thanked him. What was even stranger, it sounded like a genuine thank you.

The Professor watched the young woman rushing for the amulet, without moving a muscle while thinking about his possible course of action. He really meant everything he said, perhaps he judged her a bit harshly? Maybe she just needed someone who would guide her on the right path with her manners, and perhaps he could do it in a way, that would save his people some running around?

With a silent sigh, he headed slowly into the main room, keeping a kind smile on his face.

“Yeah, we did it, congratulations, however, I am afraid I cannot let you keep it.”

Gabriel smiled apologetically.

“Don´t take it badly please, but I think you could really use a lesson or two in manners, so I am going to take that amulet.”

He reached to her with his palm turned upside for her to place her loot in it.

“And in return…”

The Professor continued.

“I´ll give you an opportunity to make easier money. You probably don´t know it but selling artifacts like this for their actual price is a real pain. Most people will offer you only the price of the gold and gemstones on it, which is just a fraction of its actual value, and those who know better and have that kind of money usually have enough resources to get rid of a young woman like yourself.”

Even without noticing, he slipped into his lecturing tone, almost as if he was giving her a lesson on “Treasure hunting 101”

“So give me that amulet and I take you somewhere, where you can get your hand on some valuable paintings, that are much easier to sell.”

Danielle turned to look at him as he congratulated her, about to thank him a second time for all his help - after all, none of this would have been possible without him, even though he did also cause a few problems along the way. His next statement, however, stopped her before she could utter a word, and her smile faded in an instant.

“What?” incredulously, she stared at Gabriel. No, this was more than just a stare, there was no curiosity in her eyes, there was anger as she felt a deep sense of betrayal. That was also coupled with disappointment as she stared at his open palm, then looked up at him again. He thinks I'm going to just give it to him? In exchange for a lesson in manners? Who does this wise guy think he is!? Lecturing me on history is one thing, but commenting on my manners? It was easy for Danielle to get lost in her thoughts, stunned by what the Professor, her accomplice in thievery thus far, was implying.

“Spare me the lecture, Professor. I should have known that this was all an act...” she was now glaring at the man, a self-proclaimed protector of all archaeological finds. “You used me to get to the amulet too.” She herself was guilty of that, having used him to reach the amulet herself, but at least she was honest about it and stopped pretending that she had any intention other than to keep the amulet for its value and sell it to the highest bidder.

Surely walking away with the ornament was worth more than whatever other proposal he had up his sleeve. How could an artwork be worth more than real gold? An actual treasure item that was the full package with a fancy title and all the mysterious lore surrounding it!

“Guess what? I don’t need your lessons, or your poor advice on making easier money!” she snapped, before swiftly raising the amulet’s chain over her head to let it hang on her neck, then she pulled her shirt's collar to slip the precious gold pendant into her shirt against her chest, safe and sound. “I’m not giving it to you. I need it, so...” Drawing her scimitar, she shrugged and held the blade between them before she started to move toward the door, the end of her weapon pointing at him and her eyes fixed steadily on him. “Let’s see how much of a gentleman you really are... unless that was also one big lie and I've been fooled twice.”

Gabriel #18

Danielle didn´t accept his offer and not only that. In her anger, she accused him of using her, drawing her weapon. With a silent sigh, the Professor stepped sideways, blocking the only way out with his body.

“I am sorry, but that´s not how it works.”

He tried to keep his face and voice serious, but something wasn´t right. For a guy who was facing someone with a sword unarmed, he was way too relaxed and enamored? Truth to be told, Gabriel had a hard time seeing the blonde woman as a serious threat. After seeing her to act like a lost puppy so many times, his brain simply refused to change her category, especially when he saw so many holes in her stance. In his eyes she was a simply puppy, cute and adorable in her anger, that was trying to prove itself by barking at a much bigger and older dog.

“Please, put that sword down.”

He asked with that kind smile not leaving his face.

“It would really pain me if I hurt you by accident.”

Although he didn´t want to fight with her, the Professor stood his ground, not letting Danielle to leave the room with the amulet in her hands.

“So, stop and listen. No one used you. I was honest with you from the very first moment when I told you that the amulet belongs to the museum, where I also plan to put it.”

He paused for a moment, before reaching out to her with his hand again.

“I understand that you really need that money but trust me when I am saying this isn´t worth the risk. If you try to sell it you´ll get barely one-tenth of its real value. What I am offering on the other hand can earn you a few millions of Belli.”

As Gabriel moved to stand in the passageway, her only exit, Danielle silently cursed beneath her breath for not acting sooner. Perhaps she should have made a run for it or tried to immobilise him... somehow... though she had no idea how to do that as she hadn’t thought this far into her plan.

A look of pure frustrated grew on her face, “If you don’t want to hurt me then don’t. Now, move! I’m leaving with the amulet.” She huffed, her announcement backed up by nothing but a determined gaze and her weapon that turned to remain pointed at Gabriel as she moved closer, searching for an opening to slip past him.

She groaned as he stated that the amulet belongs to the museum and she rolled her eye, “Fine. Then steal it from whoever I sell it to - I will even send you the address myself, but you’re not taking it from me! I fought to be here and is rightfully mine!” For some reason, this was difficult for her too - she didn’t want to attack him, partly because she wasn’t confident that she would actually win a fight, and partly because she was just starting to like him. Danielle hoped it wouldn't come to this, but it seemed this man was not going to budge.

Watching his hand, she listened to his words, conflicted, and she remained silent for a few seconds, until she finally looked up at him again to meet his gaze. “Barely one-tenth is still more than nothing - which is what I will get if I give it to you. I can keep the amulet, and the paintings that you propose. Why should I choose one?" she chuckled with a bit of a greedy snicker. "If you don't help me, I will find a way to get my hands on those paintings myself. Maybe I won't even go for the paintings, but one way or another, I will get this money! You say you understand, but you don’t...”

With that, she raised her scimitar and slashed it at Gabriel’s extended arm, hoping to at least disrupt his balance enough to buy herself the time to run past him. As she attacked, however, she kept her own guard up, knowing nothing about his fighting capabilities and not reckless enough to go all in with a first strike so blindly.

Gabriel #19

Danielle wasn´t listening to what he was telling her and what was even worse, she decided to attack him. Well, in that case, no more of the good professor.
For someone who clearly lacked any real martial experience, she moved fast, but not enough to outpace him. Facing her sword, Gabriel didn´t even try to dodge. Instead of that, he stepped forward to intercept it. His right hand, that was stretched forward, waiting for the amulet moved in a graceful, flow-like fashion, grabbing the top of her sword hand. However, instead of pushing it simply away from his body, the Professor directed the flow of Danielle´s power back at her, twisting and pulling her arm into a throw. Not her of course, but her weapon, prying it out of her fingers, before throwing it to the side.
“Empty Moon: Reversal”
Although he already disarmed her, Gabriel didn´t let go of her hand. On the contrary, he pulled it slightly upwards, taking another short step towards her, so for an uninvolved observer, they could resemble a pair getting ready to dance.
“You are not listening.”
He accused her with a smile on his face. However, this one was very distant from the usual warm smile he was using. This one was cold and deadly, a smile of a predator, that captured its prey.
“So let me repeat myself, just for this time. There is no way you are leaving this place with the amulet. Just because I like you, I am offering you compensation. If you don´t want it, fine you are free to walk away after you´ll give me that thing, but try to bar your fangs at me again, and this time I will seriously hurt you. Do you understand?”
His voice was cold and deadly serious, not letting a single room for doubt, that this time he really meant it.

As Gabriel manoeuvred around her so expertly, Danielle was taken by surprise. She could guess that he was fluent in some sort of fighting style, but she didn’t expect something as flowing as this. His movements were seamless, as he took control of the situation so easily, turning her offence on its head and forcing her into the defensive in a sheer second.

Before she knew it, her scimitar was sent skidding across the stone floor of this underground space they were in, and she was swung around like a ragdoll. As she nearly lost her balance, her body seemed to threaten to throw itself at the man, but one quick step was enough to bring it to a sudden halt. Unfortunately, however, he stepped toward her instead, closing any gap that was between them.

She glanced toward her sword - far and out of reach. She tilted her head to look up at her hand, steadily in his grasp, firm enough to keep her locked in place as she couldn’t pull away from him, but not so firm that it was painful. It was very much like a dance that the two seemed to be in, as she next looked at Gabriel’s face, a shiver running down her spine as she saw the smile that he wore. He often had one on his face, a gentle and caring one, sometimes patronising, but never one as cold as this one. For the first time in his presence, Danielle felt an immense level of dread and fear fall upon her as she realised what was going on - the hungry wolf had caught its prey. The prey wasn’t her, however, it was the amulet... the one she wore around her neck, a decision that she made without thinking and now regretted.

If she gave it to him, he’d let her go, and even offer something else in its place. She just needed to-

No. The amulet is mine!

Struggling against him, she raised her free arm to put it between them and pushed at Gabriel’s chest with her forearm to pull away from him at the same time with all her might. “Let go of me! Forget it, I'm not giving it to you, it's mine!”

Unnerved by his smile and the seriousness in his tone, she looked away from him, lowering her gaze as she struggled. Suddenly, she stomped on Gabriel’s foot with her heel, then raised her foot higher in a quick movement to kick at his knee as hard as she could. If he had some way of blocking this, then she’d use the force to push against and thus provide more strength in her pulling away, but if not - his knee was going to hurt a lot.

She knew she was near useless without her sword and needed to get away from him to retrieve it if she was to stand any chance.

Gabriel #20

She really was like a stray puppy in his eyes. Too wild and scared to accept the helping hand that was offered to her, biting it instead. Well good for her, because if he recognized her as serious threat, the martial artist in him would kill her already. Like this however he was still intending to use only the amount of force necessary to explain the situation to her. So, as Danielle struggled against his grip, the Professor pulled her closer, not letting her run away.
“Well in that case…urgh Indestructible!”
He cursed when she stomped on his leg. Letting his instinct take over, he tensed his whole body to the level of steel. Not only the area around his knee that she targeted, but also his grip, squeezing her hand hard to prevent her from escaping.
“Be it your way.”
Gabriel sighed as he released his technique, forcefully pulling her arm towards himself, before catching her in his arm, hugging her, his grip strong enough to prevent her from escaping, but still rather gentle to not cause any pain. From the time they spent together, he knew how she hated being too close to other people, so this was her punishment for attacking him for the second time.
“I told you, that if you bare your fangs on me again, I will seriously hurt you, didn´t I?”
He asked coldly, with fingers resting gently against her ribs.
“But since I am a gentleman I´ll give you one last chance to walk away from this with your health and dignity intact. Give me that amulet voluntarily, or I will tickle you.”
This wasn´t an empty threat as if she tried to resist or to refuse him again, the Professor would start to tickle her as long as necessary to gain her cooperation.

Danielle’s foot slammed on Gabriel’s successfully as she got a reaction out of him. As her heel hit his knee, however, she found it to be solid as steel. The abrupt interruption of her own momentum sent a shockwave of pain through her ankle, but she used Gabriel’s technique to give her more to push against. Unfortunately, it seemed his grip had also tightened and no matter how hard she tried to pull herself away from him, it was no use.

As her opponent’s body finally loosened up, she saw this as a sign that he relented, but before she could escape him, Gabriel forcefully jerked her arm forward and her entire body followed. The attack that came next was for more horrible than she could have ever predicted.

He's... hugging me...

Staying perfectly still for a moment, her eye wide in confusion and discomfort, a faint blush crept across her cheeks, but her embarrassment was soon replaced with frustration as she squirmed in his arms to look at him. “What is wrong with you!?” she snapped, this being very far from normal behaviour in battle. Shaking her head, she didn’t dare ask what kind of a creep this man was, as she listened to his threat.

“Tickle me?” she asked in disbelief. “You think I’m going to give you an invaluable piece of treasure because you threaten to tickle me?”

This guy is either some incredible level of delusional or just an idiot.

She shook her head again, squeezing her arms between them to push against him, desperately trying to get out of this awkward position she found herself in, but his grip just wouldn’t budge, his arms locked around her, firmly. “Let... go... of...” her request was cut short and a gasp escaped her the second Gabriel’s fingers dug into the sides of her ribcage.

Becoming tense, she squirmed more as her body violently twitched, her resistance only eliciting more dreadful tickles that induced the absolute worst case of the giggles. She tried to suppress her laughs, clenching her jaw tighter than ever before, her lips pursed, but it was inevitable. Eventually, a tearful laugh that mixed in with curse words would burst out of her mouth, and this would go on for several minutes to yield no desirable effect for Danielle.

“Okay!” she finally spluttered, her eye closed and her brow twisted into hysteria as she was no match for the mighty tickles. “Okay! I’ll give you...” she was still writhing in his arms, but her intention was no longer to steal the amulet, as it was now simply to get away from his hands. “Please, stop! I’ll give you the amulet!” Lowering her head against his chest, she finally gave up and tried to be as still as possible so that he would stop tickling her. She had never felt more humiliated in her entire life. “I’ll give you the amulet... just let go of me... please...”

Gabriel #21

Part of him still thought it would be much easier to simply kill her and take the amulet, especially after she tried to chop his hand off, but the other part of him was constantly countering all these arguments with memories of Danielle with puppy filters on. And so when she refused his terms again and even laughed at his threat he didn´t stab her but tickled. It was a very awkward moment, that lasted surprisingly long, but exhausting all his diplomatic skills, the professor didn´t see any other way how to make his point clear without hurting her.

Danielle proved to be much more resilient than he expected, but in the end, even she was no match for his tickling skills, which he mastered on his sister. When she finally gave up, it was almost as if someone flipped a switch inside his head as not only did, he stop tickling her, but also his mood changed completely. Gone was the cold, dangerous look, replaced again by his kind and friendly smile from before.

“See, everything is much easier when you show the proper manners.”

Gabriel praised her, almost as if he was one of his dogs, who just behaved well. Even going so far, as to release her from his arms, although carefully in case she would lose her balance and fall.

“Now, that amulet, please.”

He reached towards her with his hand again, slowly to not startle her, using the same kind tone she could hear him use towards Beast not so long ago. He wasn´t threatening her anymore, that much was obvious, from his relaxed pose and demeanour. On the contrary, he was showing her a trust that she will stick to her part of the agreement and won´t try to run or attack him again.

Danielle didn’t look at him as he praised her, a frown hidden beneath the hair that fell over her face. It was easy to pick up on the kind of tone Gabriel used, and she did not appreciate it. It was like he was training a puppy to behave in a certain way - it was condescending... but perhaps useful.

This... b*stard...

Like a puppy who had just been scolded, she kept her head down as she slowly nodded. “Yes... I’m sorry.” she whimpered, tensing at the slightest movement that he made, but relaxing once she realised that he was letting her go. It was good that he moved slowly, as she had expended a lot of her energy in her struggle and she didn’t seem to have a lot of it left, her body loosening in resignation as she was allowed to move.

Still not meeting his gaze, she watched his hand, extended toward her for the amulet, and she slowly raised her hands to grab the chain to remove it from around her neck. “Here...” she sighed as the chain was lifted off her skin but before the amulet could be pulled out of her shirt, Danielle suddenly let go and in a quick burst of energy, she made a sprint past him to the exit.

Her ankle throbbed with each step, having strained it when she landed a strike on a tekkai-infused limb, but she pushed herself to keep going, willing the pain away in her determination to get away from Gabriel with the treasure.

Glancing back, she stumbled as she ran through the narrow corridor, but didn’t see him close behind. She was sure that he would follow her, perhaps she moved fast enough? Outside the chamber, a lot of the light was gone, she couldn’t tell for sure... but a subtle sense of victory swept over her and a smile grew on her face. I made it... Hah! I made it, and I got the amulet! Now, I just need to-

Her thought and her feeling of success were both brought to an abrupt end as she ran straight into the boulder. “No! No, no...” she whispered, quietly, as she had forgotten that the corridor was blocked off. The loud profanity that came from the girl’s mouth next was anything but a whisper as a single prolonged curse word echoed throughout the entire underground complex. Turning to have her back to the boulders, she didn’t even bother waiting for Gabriel as she leaned against the blockage, and slid down it to sit down on the floor, tired.

Danielle finally took the amulet off, and in pure frustration, hurled it across the corridor in Gabriel’s direction. "Take the stupid thing!"

Gabriel #22

She really was a puppy. So cute, that it should be illegal. The Professor sighed for himself thinking, whatever he shouldn´t give her that amulet after all. She was looking so sad and heartbroken; it was tearing his own soul apart. He reached for the amulet, still unsure what his next step should be when she suddenly sprinted past him the amulet still in her hands.

“Hmmmm”

He frowned, hand still reaching towards the now empty space as a wave of anger washed over him. She gave him her word and broke it. But perhaps, he shouldn´t judge her that hard? After all, it wasn´t really fair given the fact that he kind of forced her to agree with his terms.

“Why women have to be so complicated!?”

He growled, before turning around, walking down the corridor all the way towards the large boulder, that was blocking the patch towards freedom. He found Danielle there, broken and resigned, cursing the unfortunate fate, before throwing the amulet at his feet.

Gabriel stood there for several seconds which seemed like an eternity heartbroken to see her in that state, before finally reaching for that thing, wrapping it in a handkerchief, and hiding it in his pocket.

“I know you probably hate me now and I don´t blame you for that.”

He picked a calm and soothing tone, one that always worked on his dogs, while approaching her.

“I deeply regret, that I had to hurt you back there, but I want you to understand, that I had no other option. On one hand, that amulet is too valuable an artifact to end up in some private collection and on the other one, you are such a sweet person under this lack of manners and rude behaviour that I simply couldn´t bring myself to kill you over it. So what you think, can I treat you to some cookies with a nougat filling?”

He reached again to her, this time to help her back up on her feet. And while he was standing there, he noticed one more thing. Whoever build this place either didn´t do a good job or simply couldn´t count with all this movement during these past centuries. Either way, the corridor was too narrow for the boulder and while it was rolling through it, it actually damaged the ceiling. On one spot it tore out a whole chunk of stone, exposing dark dirt above it.

“Oh, and I think I just found our way out.”

He added.

Hearing his words, Danielle didn’t move from her spot, fighting the powerful pull into despair. She had wasted precious time chasing after this amulet, having even travelled here specifically for it, and now she will be leaving none the richer, her hands and pockets equally empty.

I’m trying, Rosalina... I’m trying...

With a heavy sigh, she looked at his hand, considering his words. Did she hate him for this? Yes. However, he had previously offered an alternative, expensive paintings that could be stolen and sold, so perhaps there was hope... now, how much convincing would be necessary?

All she wanted to do was slap his hand away and scream at him to stop treating her like a puppy, speaking in such gentle tones, lecturing her about behaviour, and offering her treats - but doing that would make more of an enemy of him than she needed right now. It was ironic how this man seemed to think he could lecture her on manners when he himself seemed to be utterly clueless on how to interact with another human being in a normal way.

Hesitantly, she grabbed his hand and pulled herself up to her feet with a silent nod to his offer. Would it be so bad? Nougat-filled cookies were delicious anyway... but they were not a priority. “Thank you. What about... those paintings you mentioned?” she asked, before he announced that he’d found a way out.

Turning, she tilted her head back to look up at the hole in the ceiling, but as her face was about to light up with hope, she quickly corrected that to resume her sad puppy look. “Can we dig through it? Maybe Beast can from the other side.” she suggested, before looking around her. “Ah, I need to get my sword.” she moved away from Gabriel. Reaching the wall, she let out a loud wince as she put any weight on her ankle, exaggerating deliberately. This would be the test to determine how easily swayed this man was, and whether she won him over enough to trust that he wouldn’t leave her here and stay true to his word about the paintings... Would he look after her and fetch her scimitar for her?

Lifting her foot to hang just above the ground, she held onto the wall and hobbled forward, this clearly going to take a lot of time. Glancing back at Gabriel, she wondered if he’d take the bait.

Gabriel #23

To Gabriel´s great satisfaction and relief, Danielle accepted his offer, using his hand to raise herself up to her feet, asking about these paintings. In his eyes, she looked so unsure when doing so, almost as if she was ashamed for saying them. Well, it was true that she broke her word, but the fact she felt a shame now was clear proof that she realized her mistake and was ready to set herself on the proper path…well at least in the Professor´s eyes.

“Don´t worry about that.”

He smiled at her encouragingly, while resisting the urge to pat her on the head.

“I already promised them to you and while you…misbehaved a bit, I believe that this will be a great opportunity to help you to get on a proper path.”

Then she asked about digging their way up and whatever Beast could help them out.

“Well, I mean…you are a lady so I originally thought I will be the one doing the digging, but if you want to help, I won´t stop you. But don´t count on Beast that much. Right now, we are really deep underground so she can not hear us nor sniff us out.”

As it was a long way up with an uncertain outcome, Gabriel intended to let Danielle go for her sword and start digging right away, but when he noticed her grimace and limping, he immediately jumped to her side, propping her up.

“You are hurt?”

He asked with sincere care in his voice.

“Wait, let me help you…”

Without waiting for her response, Gabriel took Danielle in his arms and put her sitting on the ground.

“I am really sorry, I used Indestructible out of reflex, I didn´t want to hurt you…”

The Professor quickly took her boot off taking a look at the foot under it.
