Simon recognised most of the faces they passed, including the security guards and he gave a friendly smile to them as Annika uttered the magical phrase to get them through the doors, hassle-free. Miguel also recognised a few faces, but he chose to keep his head down instead.
This was especially true as they passed the spa.
While Simon took just a brief moment to pop his head in to wave to Matilda, forever the goddess of lava stones in his mind, Miguel hurried past without peering inside to meet anyone’s gaze. The last time he was here, it was not on good terms, and was quite frankly an embarrassing episode he wished to move past and not relive. “Simon, come on…” he urged the man to hurry up and Simon hurried after Miguel and Annika, a spring in his step that enabled him to catch up with ease. “It’s nice to see everyone again. Where’s that other guy? What was his name… Fo-”
Miguel shuddered and jabbed Simon in the rib cage to make him shut up, “Forward! Let’s keep moving forward and not get stuck anywhere along the way, alright? Mysteries to solve and all that, remember?”
With a nod, Simon grinned again - that is, if he ever stopped grinning to begin with, and moments later, they were in their new office. Both men paused to take in the scene, it was magnificent and surpassed any of their hopes for an impressive office while under the corrupt Chief. This office was even better than what the chief had been given back at the station! In astonishment, they were both rooted on the spot, pivoting to get a good look at everything on the walls, the floor, and the grand mahogany desks.
Then they both paused, their gazes fixed on the same thing - the folder on the right desk.
Simon and Miguel looked at each other in perfect silence, then they looked at the document again. Miguel cleared his throat and Simon scratched his jaw line. The two boys looked at each other once more as they seemed to be silently declaring contest until suddenly-
Each man extended one arm in front of the other like a bar to push their opponent back as they broke into a sprint to the desk that had the folder on it. To anybody outside the room, the sudden burst of energy may have very well sounded like an earthquake, coupled with the muffled sound of them shouting over each other.
“Mine!” Simon blurted out as he managed to reach the desk first and swipe the folder off the desk before he ran to the other side of the room, conveniently where Annika was. Meanwhile Miguel was left standing at the empty desk in frustration. “The desk on the left is yours. Now-”
“Before you go opening that folder, we need to iron out a few things.”
Simon looked at Miguel, thumbing the edge of the folder and irritated that he was interrupted. “What?”
“With our badges, our weapons were also confiscated. We need your dad to get those back for us, or a substitute in my case…" Ignoring his recent defeat, he turned to address Annika. "It was a standard flintlock pistol, any replacement will do, but this genius with the folder here seems to have forgotten that he had his revolver modified and it’s unique.”
