King’s response was not immediately hostile, just filled with disappointment and some annoyance. This confused Ridley, but he was grateful that it hadn’t immediately erupted into a physical conflict. In truth, King seemed to enjoy toying with him. Playing with his food, as it were. He also had more than something of an ego, judging from the superior way that he was addressing Ridley. Could he maybe use this to get more information out of him? Maybe… but he didn’t have time to think about how to best word it as King spoke up again.
Every word was like a cold knife into Ridley. More than a threat, it sounded like a promise that King would bring him back - or die trying. Ridley lifted his hand over his heart, clutching at it delicately. King went on about how the outside world was no place for them. How they’d be feared rather than accepted. But… Ridley’s experiences were… Mixed. Yes, of course some people were frightened by the sight of them, but others just treated them like people. Of course, no one had seen his body or face aside from himself. The others could at least pass as normal people. Yes, scarred and changed, but that could be looked past. Even King looked normal. He could pass. Ridley was the only one that couldn’t without covering his body from tip to toe in bandages.
Ridley looked up at King, only mulling over his question for a moment. He knew. Of course he knew. He had attacked Marge and Homer in one of his…fits. He wouldn’t have been surprised if they’d gone to the authorities, and King had heard about it that way. It didn’t mean they deserved whatever fate King had deigned to bestow upon them. Out of all of the HGs that he’d met, it was true that…
“I…” Ridley murmured, looking down at his hand, “...am a monster.”
Frankie was just a scared child. Nina was a wonderfully sweet child. Blair was his dear friend. Sanagi as well… They were all extraordinarily precious. He would protect them no matter what so long as he could still think and feel. He’d given King the admonition that his words had disturbed him. They truly had and that would probably play to his ego. Judging from Nina’s number, there were at least eight HGs. Including himself, he’d now met six. That meant there were at least two more. Others could be like King, loyal dogs of Moreau, but from what King had said thus far, Ridley was fairly sure that he had not come across those other two yet, and it was likely that the other two weren’t working with him.
What was important now, though? Getting out of here without revealing anything about the others, certainly. But also ensuring that he wasn’t followed. Was there any more information he could get out of this encounter? Possibly more on King’s capabilities. Moreau’s plans? Marge and Homer’s locations? Could they even still be saved? Ridley pinched the bridge of his nose with a hand. His anxiety-addled brain couldn’t seem to think straight anymore. What should he do? What could he do? The darkness and putrid scent filling the room felt like they were suffocating him.
“I can’t… I need to…” Ridley turned and reached for the door, fumbling in the darkness to get it open, “...get out.”
