“NOOOOOOOO!”
Ru squeaked as Leo charged the basket. His panic didn’t prevent his brain from working. He quickly snapped the torch up to light the flame that would lift the basket up, but it needed time to build up all that hot air. He chucked the torch away from the very flammable basket just as Leo hit the side. He jolted and fell flat on the floor as Leo tumbled into the basket beside him. He covered his eyes and screamed as they fell before harmlessly bouncing and landing on the sea king.
“Aaa…?” Ru whimpered, sitting up slowly.
For several long seconds, they just sat there unmoving. It… didn’t work? Well, Ru supposed that they could just wait until the hot air filled the lantern and pulled them up itself. It’d be fine as long as the sea king didn’t just sink into the water. Ru sighed softly in relief, only to freeze up and eye Leo as she produced a wooden pike from her bag of supplies. W-Wait, when had she made…?
“Leo, wait, don’t!”
Too late. She stabbed the pike down into the sea creature’s skin. Almost immediately, the cliff and trees suddenly started to loom higher ominously. Oh, oh no. Ru sunk down to the floor of the basket as Leo babbled about the island growing. He reached out to tug on her sleeve and pull her down beside him but he was an instant too late. Abruptly, they were launched skyward. Ru was flattened against the floor of the wooden basket, turning into jelly slightly just to make it easier on himself.
They went higher and higher, the wind whipping all around them as they soared up into the clouds. As they reached the peak of their launch, they slowed, allowing Ru to pry himself up off the floor and float vaguely in the air as their speed died. Ru immediately latched onto the side of the basket with wide eyes as Leo celebrated their success - prematurely. Because, as quickly as they had soared up, they began to fall. Ru’s eyes popped out of their sockets as his heart jumped into his throat.
“...aaa,” was all Ru could get out before all of the air seemed to vacate his lungs.
Ru reached out with one arm and grabbed Leo as her feet began to lift off the floor, pulling her over to the side of the basket as he frantically glanced up at the flame. It was still lit - miraculously - and hadn’t caught their balloon on fire. They were falling, but eventually their fall started to slow and eventually leveled off. Ru cautiously peered over the edge of the basket to see if the sea was approaching at a breakneck pace still. No… it looked like it was staying where it was.
“Did… we do it? We… we did it? Leo?!”
