Reynard seemed to respond to the praise positively. Good, good. She felt her expression soften just a bit seeing Reynard’s wagging tail. The moment was cut short by the callous shout of the last remaining serious threat, Betty. Rosie’s red eyes flicked up to the hole in the ceiling that she’d created to see the obnoxious pirate standing above them. Rosie immediately bristled and braced herself to take whatever Betty intended to shoot at her.
A tentacle shot out directly for her. Did Betty really think that she could lift Rosie up? Ridiculous. As the tentacle was about to wrap around her, Reynard jumped in front of her and was captured instead. Rosie blinked incredulously. Hadn’t she just ordered him to get back to the ship? Why was he protecting her? Rosie didn’t have time to be frustrated with him as Betty pulled him up onto the deck above. With a scowl, Rosie used her tail to vault herself back onto the top deck where Betty had retreated to the side with Reynard in tow.
Rosie leveled her gauntlet at Betty to send an iron needle through her head when Betty thrust Reynard out over the water. Surprising even herself, Rosie froze. She felt something stir in her chest as her mind went blank. What did she do? For once, her logic failed to provide her acceptable outcomes. All of them ended with Reynard going into the water or Betty getting away. Rosie snarled visibly at Betty’s deal. That was when Reynard called out to her - not using the appropriate title - and bit Betty’s hand, causing her to let go of him. With that, he went into the water.
Rosie’s body instantly lurched into motion. Her tail thwacked the deck, shattering it as she launched herself at Betty with blinding speed. She grabbed the woman by the throat, a rare anger burning behind her spectacles. There was a crack as Betty’s neck popped with the force of it. Tossing the pirate aside into the mast with such force that it snapped it in half, Rosie whirled around to look overboard where all that could be seen of the young recruit was the fading traces of sea foam marking where he’d fallen into the water.
“MAN OVERBOARD!” Rosie roared with a hint of desperation in her voice. She couldn’t afford not to be heard. “OFF THE PORT SIDE OF THE ENEMY CRAFT! LIEUTENANT VOLTA!”
Her claws dug into the railing, making it snap and splinter into pieces. She felt so totally helpless. Some part of her railed at her to jump in after Reynard, but the logical part knew that was folly and overruled it. That was not something that she could do. Rosie’s eyes shifted over to where Betty had crumpled to the deck in a heap after being used to snap the mast. Ah, but there was something that could be done.
Scales clattering against each other dangerously as Rosie slowly stalked her way over to Betty’s prone form, she lifted one of her arms up high into the air, claws outstretched with lethal menace. This worthless subhuman trash needed to be eliminated. She could not be suffered to live a moment longer. As Rosie’s shadow fell on the pirate, she brought her hand down for the killing blow.
“Stop, Rosalyn.”
A hand caught her wrist as she plunged it down at Betty. Her scales bristled as Rosie’s head snapped around to see who dared to stop her. She didn’t flinch when she saw who it was.
“Captain Hertz. Let. Go,” she said softly with a slight growl.
Captain Hertz held her gaze with his own firm, stern one and shook his head slowly.
“Calm down. This isn’t how we do things,” he said softly, before looking past her and nodding, “Look. See? It’s alright.”
Rosie turned to follow his gaze, seeing Lieutenant Volta pulling up a waterlogged Reynard over the side.
“Is this really how you want him to see you?” Vaun asked quietly, “I thought you wanted to set an example.”
A long moment passed before Rosie finally reverted out of her hybrid form into her human one, visibly relaxing as her entire demeanor shifted from intense to more tired than usual. Vaun finally let go of her as she retracted her hand. She turned away from Betty, walking over to Kurt and Reynard, hauling them both onto the deck proper by their collars. Kurt grunted in protest, but still accepted the help nonetheless. Rosie held Reynard in both arms like a child, tilting his head to one side.
“How is he?”
“Mrhm,” Kurt grumbled, shaking off the water, “A little waterlogged, but he’ll live.”
