Yanmei wasn’t particularly helpful with a destination, but Astraea helped the girl up onto her back so that she could wrap her arms around her shoulders if she wanted. She let go of Jan when they breached the surface. He muttered something about her hand. In all of the confusion, she hadn’t really noticed. She lifted up a hand out of the water where one finger was definitely bent the wrong way. Astraea just blinked at it before wrenching the dislocated finger back into place with a sickening crunch. She wiggled her fingers, feeling a jolt of pain travel down her arm. Astraea smiled.
“I can still feel, so it will heal,” she replied cheerily to Jan. In return, he offered her an actually helpful suggestion about where to go. She looked toward the cruiser. If it did have the additional security that Jan said it did, then she would likely be safe. The only problem would be getting onto it! She was about to grab him and go when he asked her a rather strange question. When Astraea processed it, she just giggled and shook her head at Jan.
“Worry you do about such strange things when your life is in peril. Do focus, else our pursuers go feral,” Astraea said. Still, she had little experience with reading outside of manuals for instruction. She was curious as to the value of such a story. Maybe it would contain interesting instructions for how to escape capture. “I do not mind. Now, take a deep breath, for the seas are not kind!”
With that, she grabbed him by his shirt and dove back under the surface of the water. Mermaids were extraordinarily quick swimmers, and Astraea was no exception. She had them up by the side of the cruiser shortly, resurfacing on the side of the ship that faced the docks. She looked up, seeing a ladder built into the side of the pier. She let go of Jan again and glanced back at Yanmei.
“We are here, but I still cannot walk on land, I fear.”
